Derweduwen Albert, Luc & Dirk

Derweduwen A.L.D. from Zingem in Belgium

Zingem
This town Zingem is in East-Flanders, between Gent and Oudenaarde. In the river basin of the Schelde. Albert had to explain the way to his house more than 3 times and still I got lost once. At last I found Weistraat in the middle of nowhere. The sons Luc and Dirk were not home yet but father Albert (70 years old) was kind enough to give me all the information I needed. This is not the first time that he has a reporter on his lofts. What didn’t this man win yet? What did he win this year? Strain

Father Albert is 70 years but still in good shape. He had already pigeons when he was 10 years. In these 60 years of pigeon racing he had some amazing results and excellent pigeons in his hands. ‘When I was only 10 years old’, says Albert, ‘ I owned good pigeons. I could win 1st prizes but I did not have a good strain of pigeons like I have now. From 1960 till 1980 I raced in partnership with Degrootte. The name Degrootte-Derweduwen was very famous on races from 350-500 km. We did not race the national fond races yet. In 1962 I went to the famous Gerard Vanhee (Wervik) for the first time. I got some youngsters from his best racers. (From Sproete, Patrick, Motta, and Remi…) Each year I got new blood from Vanhee, direct pigeons or from auctions. Maybe 80 % of our birds are strain Vanhee now. I only got other blood from Robert Dobbelaere, Emiel Denys and Robert Venus.
In 1981 I moved to my new house here and started racing on my own now. Now a days I got help from my wife and my two sons Luc and Dirk.’
Since 1990 the loft Derweduwen is one of the best racing lofts in Belgium. Each year amongst the champions on provincial, national or international championships. Each week Derweduwen have to compete with the best fanciers in East-Flanders in their club Union ET Liberté Gent. Often they can claim the victory in the long distance races. Since 1990 they have more than 70 1st prizes on these races. Derweduwen own a strain of birds that never give up and win 1st prizes easy.

Method
Albert, Luc and Dirk have 120 widowers on their big loft. On the loft in the garden are 60 widowers but there are 132 boxes. Albert does not want to many birds in one place. The other 60 widowers are above the house. Half of these cocks are yearlings. These fanciers do not race the hens, only as a youngster. ‘It’s too much work to race hens, we have plenty of work with our cocks!’ says Albert.
Cocks are matched for the first time in March. Only breeding on eggs for a few days, no youngsters allowed. After racing, still no youngsters but after the success in 2002 the family Derweduwen had much demand for their strain, that they made an exception and breed youngsters from the widowers. When the new yearlings come on the lofts, the old widowers go to the aviary for 5-6 weeks. The yearlings can breed youngsters and they know their new box well enough.
The hens are shown to the widowers each time before basketing. This is a lot of work but it is worth the effort. Three days before basketing, the hens are taking out of the aviary and put in a box. They get a good racing mixture. The hens must be 100% ready for the cocks. Albert says: ‘My late friend Gerard Vanhee once told me that NOT SHOWING HENS IS GOOD, BUT SHOWING THEM IS TWO TIMES GOOD! I have never forgotten this.’
These fanciers have 40 pair of stock birds. Normally they do not ring youngsters from widowers. The young cocks are raced two times on long distance. They race Bourges and Argenton. The young hens race the other races for youngsters also. The youngsters are separated and raced on door-system. Before this, they are darkened. The darkening for the cocks stops earlier than this of the hens. The hens have to race longer during that season.
Most of the yearling cocks race from 350-650 km. Some yearlings also race Beziers or St.-Vincent. Two-years old race fond and than Limoges and Souillac. The cocks are raced on the very long distance when they are 3 years old. Once a year Derweduwen goes to the vet. He visits Pascal Vandenbroecke, the daughter of the famous Jozef Vandenbroecke. Before the racing season, all birds got a cure against trichomonas and 5 days cure with Suanovil. Each time after the daily training they get one peanut. This helps the relation fancier- pigeon. A few days before basketing the cocks get some extra corn in the nest box and regularly vitamins to drink. All widowers eat and drink in their own widow box. They get super widowhood mixture of Beyers and Mariman. The stock birds get breeding mixture of Versele-Laga.
