Jespers-Vanderwegen, (BE) "The 'national long distance season' with the youngsters stands ahead!"
This is the 'overture' for the 'national four' with the national competitions for youngsters from Bourges, Argenton, La Souterraine and Gueret consecutively!
The performance fever under the 'young birds specialists' is slowly reaching its peak, because admit it, the conditions in which the preparation races had to be raced were not ideal. Yet the 26th of July is the date when the pigeons have to perform well, and let there be no doubt that this is worked on day and night! We left to check out the ambitions and to see if everything was going to plan in the preparation of the first 'clash' from Bourges, by one of the stars of the 2007 pigeon season, namely the duo Jespers-Vanderwegen from Holsbeek (near Leuven)!
A duo that is formed by Herman Jespers and his stepson Johnny Vanderwegen.
Herman is a self-employed garage owner, whilst his wife runs a shop selling ‘natural products'. Johnny is employed in the 'road construction' by the firm 'Heymans'. Their loft consists of 12 old racing pigeons, as well as 45 youngsters. So certainly not a great number of pigeons to race. The old birds are raced up to the national 'Bourges 2’ at the end of July, then their season is finished.
The youngsters are raced from the 'small loft' at the front of the garden according to the sliding door system, whilst there has been a sort aviary erected behind the garage, where a round of youngsters is also housed. Here the curtains are closed in the evening to try and stop it getting to cold. It is quite a cosy loft, and especially ideal by 'warm summer weather', because there is more than enough oxygen!
These youngsters were darkened until the longest day, then the darkening stops and lighting is used. They are raced in widowhood according to the system of the 'sliding door'! Before basketting they are allowed to stay with their partners for 1 to 2 hours before being put into the basket.
By the homecoming they remain together for the rest of the day, sometimes for one and a half days, depending on the time they arrive home and the toughness of the race!
The youngsters were darkened until the 20th of June or the 'longest day', and then lighting is used and they are prepared ready for the 'national races'. The weekend between the national race the pigeons are given an 'in-between race'.
That can be a 'small middle distance race' (Sens), or a sprint race from Momignies (107 Km), Soissons (204 km), Laon (158 km) to keep the pigeons in the rhythm, in the right 'cadence', 'rest rusts' you know!
During the holidays (in July) Johnny dares to increase the training with a few training races from 'Ittre', after which this is not done again.
At home the pigeons usually train 1 x per day, whereby it is noticeable that the hens train the hardest!
Whoever Works hard every week has to be ‘fed well’. At the start of the week they are fed lighter, with the final days before basketting ‘full dish’ of sport mixture, made up of a mix of a few brand names mixed together. After half an hour to an hour the dish with the remnants is removed. By-products so as milk powder, minerals and vitamins are regularly added over the food, often products that they take from their own shop.
Garlic is often added to the drinking water, sometimes swapped for apple vinegar or naturaline. They don’t cure blindly; a cure is only given on the advice and after a check-up by the veterinary surgeon. However the pigeons are given a 'disinfectant' when they return home, as well as a product from their vet.
A racing method with which they have been very successful.

A real honours list with no less than 15 x 1° Prizes, 4 pigeons in the 'top 31' National Bourges 31.824 youngsters and 8 pigeons in the 'Top 100' National Argenton against 20.844 youngsters!
No wonder that the Jespers-Vanderwegen colony was declared as 'Best Loft of Belgium' from Bourges and Argenton in 2007!
Strong breeding loft basis to top successes
Their colony was built up with pigeons from Ad Scharlaekens, which brought more ‘speed’ into their pigeons, Louis & Dirk Van Dyck wherefrom the "Kleine Dirk" (a grandson Bourges de Bourges won 1° Prov Bourges and is a brother of the world famous 'Kannibaal') has now grown to be a 'stock father out thousands'!
This is crossing with their own sort, wherein a.o. the line of the famous '020' from Gommaire Verbruggen is weaved via his grandson: the super breeder "Den 78" (a.o. father of the 1° Nat Bourges Zone C 8.973 p)! At the moment it is even so that all the old widowers are 'grandchildren' of the stock breeder "Kleine Dirk' from Van Dyck, as well as the top hens 'Bourgeke' (Van Dyck x old sort from "Den 78") and 'Ariane' (Scharlaekens x Van Dyck).
Their honours lists can be found on the photos at the edge of this report.
The toppers out the 2007 season were without doubt "Bliksem 403/07" (with 15° Nat Bourges 31.824 p., and 328° Nat Argenton 20.844 p.) and "Natalia 441/07" (winner 4° Nat Bourges 31.824 p.). They now form one of the 'top couples' in the breeding loft! When we ask Herman & Johnny which is their 'absolute top pigeon they answer in unison: the "Balonneke" ring 2147452/06, a cock and grandchild of the "Kleine Dirk" (and a 75% Van Dyck x own 'old sort').
The following top performances sparkle on his honours list:
Soissons 65 p. 4
Soissons 321 p. 2

Herman Jespers and stepson Johnny Vanderwegen, 2 pigeon fanciers in heart and soul, who have pulled themselves up to ‘great achievements ‘in the pigeon sport with only a ‘small colony’ (qua number)! In 2007 they already belonged to the 'top' in Belgium in the National races for youngsters! The following weeks we will see if they can confirm the great achievements from the previous season, or maybe even better them! Something that we wish them al the best with of course!
The very first appointment is Saturday the 26th of July with the 'overture' of the national season for youngsters from 'Bourges'!
The 'performance fever' by the 'youngsters specialists' stands at 'climax' and the warm and sweltering summer weather has definitely nothing to do with it!
