Van Elsacker-Jepsen, "provincial victory Chateauroux yearlings magnificent start of the season provisionally crowned"

Serge & Kirsten Van Elsacker, Jepsen Schilde (BE)

Schilde, 22 June 2006.
Bird flu, unusual cold and hot weather, extremely difficult releases in Germany and the south of Belgium: the preparation and the start of the season of 2006 took place in doubtful circumstances once again. Yet nothing seems to be harming the colony of Serge and Kirsten Van Elsacker-Jepsen. They’ve had an excellent start for the umpteenth time already: a phenomenon that’s recurring yearly. On 17 June –when most of the lofts are still working to get in shape– the colony of Van Elsacker-Jepsen had already obtained 12 pure first prizes, 6 of which “in combination” (i.e.: a competition organised by several clubs) and 1 provincial victory. They achieved victories from Quievrain to Chateauroux, but also in the unusual Saarbrucken and Rastatt races. The colony seems to be totally ready to make sure that 2006 will be a year to remember.
So we went to Schilde to have a chat with Serge about how –in God’s name– he’s managing things...

Pigeons
It all starts with an excellent breed of pigeons: they are without any doubt the foundation of recurring success. During the last three seasons, the colony of Van Elsacker has won no less than 126 first prizes and ten provincial races.

Origin of the breed

The advance started in the early eighties after the purchase of a late youngster at René Michielsen’s. Serge went home with "De Wezel" (B81-6603197), a Meulemans pigeon that appeared to be a super breeder. Nearly every single one of his sons were first prize winners and one of them was even better as a breeder compared to his brothers and even to his own father. “De Wezel” was coupled with "Blauwke Stoces" (B78-6226371) and they produced "Den 23" (B84-6336723) in 1984, the perfect n° 1 progenitor of the Van Elsacker colony. Among his direct offspring there are six Ace Pigeon in Union Antwerp, two Olympiad pigeons and the 1st National Ace Pigeon BDS in 1988. "Den 23" produced particularly excellent offspring when he was coupled with "Het Bourgeske"(B84-6336708), which is also a Meulemans pigeon.

The pigeons of Meulemans, as well as the Stoces pigeons of Maurits Bonte, continued to play an important role in the origin of the colony partly thanks to the contribution of pigeons of Willy van Berendonck and fellow townsman William Geerts.

Van Elsacker got some successful crossbreeding material at the late Jos Leuris in Ulicoten (Holland). The colony of this man consisted mainly of “Klak” pigeons and they filled the competition in Mid Brabant with despair.

The champion from Schilde found even more successful crossbreeding products -Janssen pigeons- at our northern neighbours. His friend Rick Mardis of the USA bought several pigeons at breeding centre Simons in Ransdaal and Jo Simons gave him two nine-year-old cocks for free. These old pigeons were grandchildren of the famous "019" and Mardis gave the pigeons to Serge because he feared that they would loose their fertility after a long trip to the USA followed by a long period of quarantine. One of these two Janssen cocks was the father of "Lucky Lady". This hen ended in the top ten of the best ace pigeons of Belgium and won three first prizes!

Van Elsacker went to the total sell-out of Alfons Nijs in Arendonk in 1995. He went home with two top pigeons, more in particular: "De Jonge Witstaartstier" and "Geschifte Hofkens". Both of these cocks were coupled with daughters of the Olympiad pigeon (so they were descendants from "Den 23" once again) and they became father and grandfather of a.o.: 1st Ace Pigeon Union South Antwerp 1997, 2nd Ace Pigeon Union Antwerp Yearlings 1998, 3rd Ace Pigeon 2000, 1st Ace Pigeon Hoogstraten 2001, 4th Ace Pigeon Union South Antwerp 1997, 1st National Bourges Zone, 2nd National Bourges 11.689 pigeons, 5th Ace Pigeon Union West 2003 and 1st Ace Pigeon Union West 2004.
He got some Louis Deleus pigeons from Heinz Brune & son in Germany. They were excellent top racers so Serge decided to go to Boortmeerbeek to buy 20 direct pigeons at Deleus’. Meanwhile, descendants have won the 1st Provincial Chateauroux 2002 and the 1st Provincial Chateauroux 2003 (7 minutes ahead!).

Pigeon stock

Serge started in 2006 with 97 racing cocks and 50 racing hens. 50 cocks and 50 hens are played in a system of total widowhood and the remaining 47 cocks are played on classic widowhood with cocks. Remarkable is that he only has 27 old pigeons and 120 yearlings. Selection is extremely severe in spite of good results. Only top pigeons who have obtained several prizes per ten are allowed to move on to the next year. It’s a clear philosophy: a very hard selection completed with a large number of fresh blood in order to create sufficient chances of acquiring new cracks... because we all know that not every youngster grows up to be a top pigeon.

Winter
Everybody knows that the foundation of a successful pigeon year is laid during winter. Let’s take a look at what Serge does during that season. Preparation starts early November: the pigeons receive a cure for paratyphus. The hens are in the aviary, the cocks in the boxes. All the old cocks –the ones that are allowed to stay– are moved and their boxes are closed in order to provide the young cocks with a box. Then, the young pigeons enter the loft and they can choose one of the free boxes. Three weeks later, the old cocks are moved back to their boxes. This year, Serge choose not to winterbreed with the racers. The pigeons are released twice a week in wintertime. He used to keep all the pigeons indoors during winter but the result was that a couple of pigeons suffered from flying injuries when they started to train. This wasn’t the case this year because the pigeons were offered the opportunity to fly during winter.
No medication is administered in wintertime unless necessary. Training is increased as from the 1st of March. The pigeons have a check-up at the vet’s before they are coupled and they receive a 7-day cure for tricho when they’re hatching eggs. Serge coupled them on 20 March. The eggs were removed after the pigeons had brooded for 8 days. Then, they were then put on widowhood.

Training and racing season

Training starts on they day the pigeons are coupled. This year however, the cocks were trained on brood and the hens on widowhood. Trainings happens quickly and in large steps. They are off to Duffel, Vilvoorde and then Quievrain with the society. During the racing season, Serge only goes to the vet when necessary. He does however stick to a medical programme and the birds receive medication for the airways if they don’t train sufficiently or if their start during training isn’t smooth.
The pigeons of Serge participate in middle distance races as well as in long middle distance games. The cocks on total widowhood are entered for middle distance competitions, all the other pigeons are flying the long middle distance programme till Limoges, Souillac.
The first selection already takes places after 4 to 6 weeks: the pigeons that perform less stay home. About 30 pigeons are written off by mid June and they are no longer entered for races. The hens fly every week but when they’ve had a tough race, they’re entered for a shorter one. The cocks fly every 14 days.
