1st Ace pigeon extreme long distanceKBDB 2010 - Derweduwen A.&.L.&.D. - Zingem (BE)

This new Ace pigeon championship was introduced for the first time in 2010. KBDB requested an Ace pigeon in three grand distance races out the international races.

Racing three national prizes is not easy of course.
Only 4 pigeons were sent in. The national result looked like this :

1. Derweduwen  A&L&D 3 prizes and 8,08%
2. Gal le-Wijnants 3 prizes and 11,69%
3. Nys Robert 3 prizes and 13,93%
4. Labiau Gerard 3 prizes and 19,73%
5. Malfait Fernand 2 prizes and 4,35%
6. Van Looy-Vannieuwenhuise 2 prizes and 6,91%

The winners entered a super pigeon. Their 4028313/07 won in three races :

  Pau national 2183p-31
Tarbes national 4576p-250
Perpignan national 6275p -75

You will soon see that it is a pigeon which is international top in 2010 !

Zingem
The letters A & L & D in the combination name stands for Albert, Luc and Dirk; a golden combination of father and two sons. They have managed to achieve many titles and national victories over the last few years. Who performed better in Belgium? There won’t be many believe me :

Father Albert, 78 years old, has kept pigeons since he was 10 years old. A pigeon career of almost 70 years! From  1960 to 1980 he raced in combination with Degrootte. Under the name Degrootte-Derweduwen they caused havoc in the Middle Distance races. There were no  national races at that time. In 1962 Albert first bought pigeons from Gerard Vanhee from Wervik. He obtained youngsters out the very best that the Vanhees had (Sproete, Patrick, Motta, Remi…). He obtained pigeons here for many years. The current basis of Derweduwen is still the late Gerard Vanhee. Later the Vanhee pedigree was supplemented with a few pigeons from Robert Dobbelaere, Emiel Denys and over the last few years also from Robert Venus (Koksijde),a hen from Andre Vaernewijck and a few hens from Daniel Aerens, including the mother of the 1st National Ace pigeon Extreme Long Distance 2010, a  mega-top breeding hen. I don’t have such a mixture of pedigrees. Derweduwen mainly remains loyal to the Vanhee stock. Sometimes there will be pigeons from other fanciers, but they have to prove themselves first and the standards are very high. Entrants are sifted and tested to the bone. In  1981 Albert started here, in the Weistraat 33 in Zingem, East-Flanders. The two sons, Luc and Dirk, have visited the lofts since they were youngsters and now all the work is divided equally between them.  You could call it a family business.
Mother Edith is also ready to help from early in the morning to late at night. They have always raced well, but since 1992 the Derweduwen train can’t be stopped. A life’s work from Albert from which the fruit is picked every year. They have continually been in the provincial, national and international pigeon interest since 1990 .

Method
In total they race here with 120 widowers. There are about 60 in the garden loft, but in the larger loft there is room for 132. There are not too many then. Above the house there are another 60 widowers. Roughly half of the cocks are yearlings. They race a few hens with a nest, mainly Barcelona, and a few yearling hens for Soustons and Libourne.
Everything is coupled here in March and allowed to brood for a few days. After the season the cocks are not usually allowed to raise any youngsters, but this year there was an exception made due to the great demand for pigeons. The yearlings are brought to the lofts and the old cocks are moved to the aviary for 5-6 weeks. During the winter months the pigeons are set free every so often. During the period November until the last flight is fully grown, they are not allowed to fly around. The development of the last flight pen is very important and nothing is allowed to disturb the growth. The hens are always shown before basketting.
The ladies are put in separate lofts three days in advance and are given a good mixture to eat. The hens are then ready to spoil the cocks. It is a lot of work but with a good organisation and a bit of good will, it is quite easy. About 40 breeding couples ensure the descendants and normally no youngsters are kept from the widowers. The young cocks are trained well . The yearling widowers are given Limoges to race, only a few go to Narbonne, St.-Vincent or another overnight race. They are also very cautious with the 2-year olds. They race small Long Distance up to Limoges and Souillac. It is only when they are 3 years old that they are given the Extreme Long Distance programme and the toughest Long Distance races so as Barcelona and Perpignan. Albert takes his pigeons to the vet Pascal Vandenbroecke, Jozef’s daughter,  once a year. Before the season a cure against trichomonasis and a 5 day cure with Suanovil against head sickness. The fact that they are not troubled by head sickness here is probably due to the fact that there are not many pigeons in the lofts.
Only half of the boxes are occupied, so there is enough oxygen. During the season they prefer to give nothing at all. As long as everything is going well there is of course no reason to give anything. A few peanuts are waiting for the pigeons after each training. This only applies to the widowers which live above the house, not for those in the garden. They are given nibbling seeds, a mixture that Albert learnt from Jules Rijckaart. A few days before basketting there is some extra corn and they are regularly given vitamins in the drinking water. They make sure there is variation in the vitamins. Various brands and formulations are reviewed. All the widowers are given their food and drink separately in the boxes. The feed is super widowhood from Beyers and Mariman mixed together. The breeders are given breeding mixture from  Versele-Laga.

Mother of this class pigeon, especially from Brive national at the beginning of the year, is the same as the three brothers, it is ‘4400287/00 Daniella’, Daniël Aerens from Drongen. She was bred out ‘NL9504349/95’, a direct Anton and Lucie van de wegen X ‘4273140/98’ out the line the Zwarte Pau. The breeding mother over the last few years in this Derweduwen loft. She crosses well with other pedigrees.
The father this time is ‘4081552/1994’ (raced self a.o. 12-17 nat. Brive and 18th nat. Narbonne) a son of the “Admiraal” 359/93(grandson of the “Kleine Bordeaux”). The cock  “Kleine Bordeaux”… who, after a sparkling 5 year career as racing pigeon, developed into the stock father of the current colony. Albert coupled him with several super hens and with this laid the basis for the many national and/or international top racers which this loft possesses. The mother of ‘1552/94’ is ‘3080111/93’, a direct Robert Dobbelaere
