The pigeon family of Norbert Ally (Aarsele, BE) was on a roll in 2015

2015 has been another great season for this loft, with a national victory from Montauban, a 2nd National Ace Pigeon longer middle distance young birds KBDB.

After selling all of their old birds in the winter of 2012/2013, Norbert (66) and Stefan Ally (35) quickly managed to start winning prizes again. However, Norbert seemed destined to finish in second place at national level in recent years: he was 2nd Nat. Libourne 2011, 2nd Nat. Souillac 2012, 2nd Nat. Brive 2014, 2nd Nat. Jarnac 2014, 2nd Nat. La Souterraine old bird s2015, 2nd Nat. Ace Pigeon longer middle distance young birds 2015 and eventually 2nd Nat. Champion young birds KBDB 2015. This must be quite frustrating for a fancier.

Luckily enough his super star Neymar put an end to this, winning the national first prize from Montauban 2015, after having won the title of 6th Nat. Ace Pigeon long distance yearlings KBDB in 2014.

The early 1980s

This success story began in the year 1984, when their neighbour Gilbert Van Parijs became the caretaker of the top loft of Norman of Westkapelle-Knokke. Before the Van Parijs pigeon breed was sold in auction, a few young birds were transferred to the small loft in Norbert Ally’s attic. Norbert initially focused on racing the young birds only, due to his busy job as a veterinary surgeon (combining his home practice with a job as an inspector in an abattoir). He did achieve great results with these young birds, often performing overwhelmingly strong. Norbert wanted to silence the critics by raising a team of old widowers, focusing on the races of the provincial and national one day long distance (500-750km). It was a great success!

This was the basis for a number of very successful years, eventually resulting in an impressive 1st, 2nd and 4th national from Souillac 2010 against 7,039 old birds, as well as the title of General Champion of Belgium KBDB 2010.

The key to success

Norbert believes a successful career in pigeon racing is based on three conditions: talented pigeons, a well designed loft (airy and dry) and a proficient fancier, who should be able to sense when to make the correct decisions. Norbert might have been one step ahead, having had a scientific education. Being able to make quick decisions is always a valuable skill. In addition, a good fancier is an excellent caretaker, a keen observer and a strict selector. You have to sense what your pigeons need and what they don’t need.

Norbert is mainly responsible for caretaking. He can now spend more time in his loft since his retirement in 2014, although he is fond of gardening as well. He started the 2015 season with 40 cocks in classic widowhood and 20 cocks (olds and one year olds) in total widowhood, with 20 one year old hens. He selected the best pigeons from his young birds’ team of 2014, just as an experiment. He also has about 160 young birds.

2nd National Champion young birds KBDB 2015

The least we can say is that Norbert and Stefan had an outstanding generation of young birds in 2015. It takes a lot of great results to win the title of 2nd Nat. Champion young birds KBDB, especially if you lose the first place by a mere 0.38%. In fact, it is even more difficult to win this title in the western part of Belgium. Their New Schumi has done his share, as the 2nd Nat. Ace Pigeon longer middle distance young birds KBDB (see below). The young birds that have really managed to stand out were the direct youngsters of their current stars: Den 341, Aaron, Gouda and Neymar.
This is a promising new generation that illustrates the breeding potential of the Ally breed.

The team had an excellent preparation, with a low number of losses, which indicates his pigeons were in excellent health. About 160 young birds of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd round were darkened and raced with the sliding door. A few youngsters and cocks without a partner were motivated with a group of old hens. The early youngsters and the hens of the second round were basketed for Bourges, which turned out to be the only disappointing race this season. This is not unsurprising, since more than 60,000 pigeons are competing over too short of a distance every season.

This disappointing race was perhaps a good thing. Due to the fact that a large group of their strongest youngsters had to do a few extra hours on Saturday in the race from Bourges (some actually only managed to arrive home on Sunday), the fanciers decided to basket only 12 hens for Chateauroux (five young birds got lost in this race). The rest of the team did a race from Pontoise or Chateaudun to gain some experience. It was a successful approach. The cocks of the second round and the hens of the third round joined the team for the last three national races of the season, and they also did really well, being almost as successful as the older young birds, and achieving a high percentage of early prizes. These pigeons have a promising future ahead!

Neymar wins national Montauban

Every fancier who competes in a national race dreams of taking a national first prize one day. Norbert and Stefan Ally have had their share of success in national races. Yet, it must be a great feeling for a fancier to claim a national victory with your loft's number one champion. That is what Neymar did in the race from Montauban. This talented racing bird had to settle for second place in last year's national race from Brive, the season in which he was also 6th Nat. Ace Pigeon long distance YL KBDB. It seems he did not want to finish in second place a second time, so he put in a great performance in Montauban, after spending five days in the basket in high temperatures in the midst of the summer. His palmares includes several national top results:

-Neymar BE13-3126093

54th Nat Limoges 6,907 p. ’14

He is a son of Schalie Souillac BE10-3075514: 6th Nat. Souillac 7,760 p. in 2012 (from Speedy Boy 705/99 x Super Bliksemgirl 268/08, a granddaughter of Gaby Vandenabeele's world famous Bliksem) x Daughter Provincial Poitiers BE11-3050244 (Marc Pollin).

A half brother of Neymar, the Nestpender 407, which was bred from Lucas 5061/10, is now well on his way to following in the footsteps of his half brother. Nestpender 407 was bred from Lucas 506/10, winner of a 2nd Nat. Souillac 7,456 p. (and a son of Schumi 131/04 x Bolleke 812/05) x Dauchter Provincial Poitiers BE11-2050244 Pollin shortly before the 2012 PIPA auction. Nestpender was only trained in 2013 with the early young birds, and has now won the following prizes:

New Schumi is 2nd Nat. Ace Pigeon longer middle distance KBDB 2015

Winning a national title or first prizes is one of the big challenges in pigeon racing, and it is sometimes a matter of detail. Norbert and Stefan had to be satisfied with yet another second place, as their New Schumi became second national ace pigeon. This young racing bird has had a great season, despite the rather disadvantageous location in the province for the young birds' nationals.

-New Schumi BE15-3126131

He comes from Schumi Junior BE13-3126131, the last son of Schumi 131/04 (1st Prov. Ace Pigeon KBDB West Flanders) before he was sold on PIPA. Schumi was paired to super class hen Gouda 204/12. The dam of New Schumi is Belle BE12-3111366, a pure Gaston Van de Wouwer from Gaston 039/11 (sire of ‘Den 341’, see below) x Zus Kim 185/11. This also shows that Gouda is an invaluable breeding hen with a proven record: you can find her impressive palmares here.

Den 341 and Aaron: long distance champions

Fanciers that are following the national races must have come across the impressive achievements and overall results of the Ally pigeons, which illustrate the level of quality in the pigeon collection in Aarsele. This is a collection of highly talented birds, and there are many talented newcomers among the 2014 yearlings and 2015 young birds as well, including most notably New Schumi. This new generation of pigeons is eager to try and become just as successful as such renowned old birds as Aaron and Den 341. They are the leading names in this loft, along with Neymar.

Meanwhile Aaron has showed to a great breeder as well. He is a son of Lucky Eric BE10-3075591 (from 4th Nat. Souillac 7039 p. 2010 Lucky 226/06 x Erika 529/08, direct E.Limbourg; granddaughter Patron) x Blauwke 489/07, a half sister of 1st Nat. Souillac 2012 (a daughter of the sire 1st Nat. Both Aaron and Den 341 originate from a highly talented group of young birds of 2012, with which Norbert and Stefan had to create a new breed in 2013, having sold their existing collection on PIPA in late 2012. This generation really overwhelmed their opponents as one year olds, and the two fanciers knew they were on the right track. They were great racing birds with great potential in the breeding loft as well, and this is what you need if you want to become a successful pigeon loft. The goal is now to maintain their position as one of the top level players in our sport, and we are confident that they will achieve this goal!
