Gerard and Bas Verkerk - Alphen aan den Rijn (NL) Once again ‘superb’ in 2009 with 22 first prizes against an average of 1.580 p

Whoever follows the pigeon sport closely, can’t avoid it. The colony of Gerard & Bas Verkerk from the Dutch Alphen a/d Rijn were just ‘outstanding’ in 2007 and 2008. Nothing or no-one seemed to be able to come close to the Verkerk pigeons in the ‘Middle Distance’ and ‘Short Middle Distance’!

Not only in the weekly competitions, but also in winning the national titles, Gerard & Bas were always classified on the highest podium… National ‘Ace pigeon’ and ‘champion titles’ which eventually resulted in Olympiad pigeons with which they represented the Netherlands at the Olympiad in Dortmund in January 2009! Performances and title wins that you can also read about on PiPa (under the heading: articles) in the reports that we made at the time, after visiting the Verkerk-colony, which will prove.... that the 2008 season was one ‘in a thousand’, one to ‘frame’, with pigeons so as “Olympic Solange” and “Olympic Stradivarius as absolute highlights!
After all kinds of festivities and champion celebrations, the time also came in Alphen a/d Rijn to start preparing for the new 2009 season. The pressing question in March, just before the start of the new sport season, was then… what will 2009 bring? All the more because ‘Olympic Solange’ and ‘Olympic Stradivarius’ together with a.o. “Icarus”, “Houdini”, “Nadala” had been transferred to the breeding loft. In any case a serious ‘drain’ in the racing team! Would the new wave of yearlings be able to fill the gap that these superior ‘crack pigeons’ had without doubt left in the racing team? Especially when you know that everyone was following the performances of the Verkerk-colony with ‘eagle eyes’… who is in the ‘spotlights’, is now followed closely, both at home and abroad. And for the men of the press it was impossible to make a report about them every week, especially during the racing season, when a weekly selection of national and provincial races were dominant, with all their victors and shiners… But do not worry, the visitors to their website: www.verkerkpigeons.com were kept informed weekly of their results in the news column. The conclusion is actually: the Verkerks didn’t have one bad race in 2009 when we look at the entire list of news articles. Today… somewhere in the middle of September, on a nice late summer day, we look back at the 2009 season in Alphen a/d Rijn with Gerard and Bas Verkerk as soundboard.

Once again a sparkling 2009 season
In addition to a series of excellent performances, including 22 first prizes (without doublings) against an average of 1.580 pigeons, the success duo was crowned in 2009 as:
Provincial (west) champion middle distance, small middle distance and youngsters!!!
An unprecedented ‘hat trick’! In addition, they will once again classify for various national Ace pigeon titles, championships and more… No-one is surprised, because the Verkerk family has, over the years, acquired the ‘status’ of top champion, say ‘super champion’. Yet they too, have to make it come true, year after year, admit it… easier said than done. To compare, each of our readers can use their own performances as a yardstick to see… how ‘damn difficult’ it is to do well year after year… never mind shining as ‘number 1’ at ‘national level’ so as Gerard & Bas have done the last few seasons!
So won super hen ‘Elize’ 9 prizes 1:100 and 18 prizes 1:10 this year. She has for example, a coefficient for the Master Award 2009 that is 3 times lower than the 1st prize last year.
They will once again end in the top ten for the best fancier WHZB. Performances to be looked up to with admiration, because for the vast majority of the enthusiasts  under our pigeon guild this is just  ‘impossible’, say ‘unachievable’! We will publish more over the official results in due time on PiPa, when all the results of the various championships have come in.
One thing must be clear, the 2009 sport season by Gerard & Bas Verkerk was once again great! Tremendous racing work which only the majority of us can dream about!
Here below you can find the “Highlights”  of the new strong 2009 season!
