At the beginning of the season Bas Verkerk appeared in a show for television network SBS6: “Wedden dat ik het kan” (I bet I can...). He had to guess the ring numbers of pigeons without of course seeing the numbers. It characterises the Verkerk family: everything they do is a success. In the television show he easily managed to guess the ring numbers of his Olympiad pigeons and the other top racers of his family. Their achievements in the program races and the ZLU races in 2012 were impressive. It was actually the first time that they took part in the ZLU competition. They were equally successful in the ZLU and the program races as they were in the television show “Wedden dat ik het kan”. Their impressive results give us an idea of what the future might bring for this loft.
Outstanding performances, top class pigeons, great fanciers and a new loft that is a true paradise for their pigeons: that is the key to success for Gerard and Bas Verkerk. The two fanciers are passionate about pigeon racing and they would do anything when it comes to winning top prizes. That explains their impressive results in the program races in 2012:
Mantes la Jolie against 10,446 pigeons over 400km 1, 5, 10, 11, 12, 30, 31, 39, 69, 70, 76, 87, 95, etc. 71/101 the fastest against 20,506 pigeons Tours S.Nat NPO against 11,759 pigeons over 593km 1, 5, 13, 14, 32, 60, 71, 72, 80, etc. 65/117 1st Interprovincial against 14,156 pigeons Pommeroeul against 3,105 pigeons over 190km 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 15, 20, 22, 24, 26, etc. 139/194 Ruffec S.Nat NPO against 4,942 pigeons over 746km 3, 10, 11, 14, 15, 17, 19, 33, 35, 38, 39, 40, 41, etc. 71/106 Argenton S.Nat NPO against 7,796 pigeons over 650km 4, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, 15, 17, 22, 28, 30, 31, 39, etc. 86/111 Duffel against 4,212 pigeons over 108km 4, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 21, 29, etc. 102/195 Nanteuil S.Nat.NPO East against 13,199 pigeons over 352km (youngsters) 7, 55, 62, 106, 110, 136, 139 (22x 1:10) 40/63
These are unique achievements: they have won no less than 27 top 25 places NPO in 2012, only in the races of between 500 and 700km. Still that was not enough for the Verkerk team. The ZLU competition is a new challenge for them and they did great right from the start! Time will tell if this was beginners’ luck or not...
4th National Bordeaux with Make my Day (pedigree) =13th International against 10,717 pigeons 8th National Narbonne hens with Fame against 1,189 hens (pedigree) =32nd National Narbonne 4,303 pigeons 15th National Narbonne against 4,303 pigeons with Marco Polo (pedigree) 17th National Narbonne hens with Sunset against 1,189 hens (pedigree) =52nd National Narbonne 4,303 hens
These are not the only feats this season: in the races of between 200 and 450km they were also very strong and the Verkerk pigeons won no less than 16 top 25 places at (semi)provincial level. This proves once again that this is a great all round team.
The top class pigeons of Verkerk
Bas and Gerard focus on one thing: top class pigeons. Bas always tries to get the most out of their pigeons, especially the racers. They apply the basic principle of good pigeons x good pigeons as well. Now that they have a bigger loft they can also house a few extra champions. It is true that they had an impressive number of top quality pigeons in their small loft in Alphen a/d Rijn. Now it seems that an increase in surface area will also result in an increase in champions. This is a loft with plenty of olympiad pigeons and national ace pigeons, as well as a large collection of provincial ace pigeons.
Bas and Gerard Verkerk have a positive and friendly relationship with their rival and neighbour De Bruijn. The two lofts keep each other motivated. In the one day long distance Bas and Gerard had the best loft this season. There was of course the amazing result from Argenton and Tours and they finished the season as first Provincial Champion One Day Long Distance. They also won quite some Provincial Ace Pigeons: 1st, 6th, 7th, 9th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 18th, 19th, 21st, 22nd, 25th and 28th! They were the best with six prizes, the best with five prizes and they had the three best yearlings. This is of course promising for the future...
Romy is one of these top class pigeons: she won the title of first Provincial Ace Pigeon One Day Long Distance 2012 and she has won quite some top prizes in the past few seasons (see pedigree). She was also awarded as 10th National Ace Pigeon One Day Long Distance at the T.B.O.T.B. 2012.
EyeCatcher is a full sister of Olympic Solange and she has a great list of achievements (see pedigree).

Her sister Olympic Solange is one of the big stars of today and possibly the most successful pigeon in the loft of Verkerk.
One of the other stars in this loft is Feline. This granddaughter of Olympic Solange has won no less than 14 prizes in the first 1% of the results.

The Verkerk pigeons in other lofts...
The Verkerk pigeons have been doing great in other lofts as well. The Burg & Waard partnership for instance has won a first National/Olympic from London against 1,465 pigeons with the 11-342. This is a race where the pigeons have to cross a lot of water and where the really strong birds stand out. This was definitely not a one trick pony: he has also won a second prize from Moeskroen against 2,070 pigeons!
There is also the first National Ace Pigeon Sprint of Leo Heremans that was bred from the line of Sprint x Verity, or in other words the lines of Magnum and Olympic Unbelievable.
The Verkerk pigeons are successful in the One Loft Races as well. Take for instance the first Ace Pigeon in the Belgian Masters. His parents stem directly from the children of The Force, Bubbles, Pavarotti and Olympic Shakira.
A new purchase
To make sure that they have a wide basis of bloodlines they purchase a new pigeon once in a while. This year was no exception! They purchased Bvlgari and they had no idea that he would win so many prizes and titles this season. This is an investment for the future, which is something every fancier here at PIPA should consider from time to time.

The future in Reeuwijk
They have a bright future ahead! The ZLU competition proved a success and Bas and Gerard hope that they will do even better next season. They had the three best yearlings in the provincial one day long distance, which means they have a talented group of two year old pigeons that will be ready to show their skills next season. We wish them good luck next season! Meanwhile, breeding has already started...
