Their many great successes came about with the help of a number of breeders that are almost guaranteed to breed talented new race winners every season, both in Velddriel and in Engelen. As many of you know, Team van Oss is racing from two different locations. Their pigeons in Velddriel (province 7) are raced in the one day long distance, their favourite competition, and they have a team of young birds there as well. Loft caretaker Erik is looking after the pigeons in Kerkdriel. Irving is responsible for the breeding birds, and he races a team of young birds in Engelen (province 3). Father Rien is the loft manager, which means they make every decision together. Every season, Team van Oss claims a number of prestigious victories in the one day long distance, and this resulted in a title of national champion one day long distance just last year. They had some very promising results in the first one day long distance races of the corona 2020 season as well. For instance, they won a 1st Bourges (561km) in the northern union Z1 of 8,019 pigeons on 18th of July. Click here to reread our report on this victory. Unfortunately the one day long distance season did not go as planned. Given the circumstances, the old birds were not darkened this season, which caused some racing cocks to be too far into the moult to perform well. Still, they had some fantastic results with their old birds and youngsters (In Velddriel and Engelen) this season, as well as some championship titles. We take a look at their best results of 2020:
The team from Velddriel traditionally races in widowhood with 60 cocks (aimed towards the one day long distance) with around 150 youngsters. Irving also races a group of 100 youngsters in Engelen, and this has been quite a successful team as well. Iriving had a particularly strong pigeon in his team last year with Kalya (NL19-1025016).
Kalya was 8th National ace pigeon YBs, and she is proving to be a great breeder as well: she is the dam of an 8th Asse Zellik (758 p.), 9th Lessines (859 p.) and 20th Quievrain (10,042 p.). Kalya is a daughter of top breeder Gebroken Poot (1st NPO Chateauroux 8,623 p.) x Nettie (1st National Melun 8,389 p.).
A team of top breeders
Like we said in the introduction, this success story came about with the help of a select group of top class breeding birds. These breeding birds are kept in a loft that sits above the offices in Kerkdriel, in the attic. Their breeding loft is 18 metres long and 8 metres wide, and all birds are kept in separate breeding boxes. We introduce you to some of their most notable breeders.
NL15-4012860, New Harry 2.0
Top breeder New Harry 2.0 is a full brother of New Harry (Jan Hooymans) and another son of Beauty Harry x Stareye. New Harry 2.0 is the sire/grandfather of some super class racing birds (see picture), including a 1st N.U. Z1 Bourges (8,019 p.) last year.
NL13-1395573, Cannonball Harry
Cannonball Harry is a son of Inteelt Kannibaal (Dirk van Dyck) x daughter Harry (Jan Hooymans). Youngsters of Cannonball Harry have won an impressive 4 x top ten NPO/Nat., including a 2nd Nat. Melun (8,389 p.). His grandchildren did even better, winning a 2nd Sens (8,414 p.), a 4th Nat. Nanteuil (14,442 p.), 9th Nat. Chateauroux (10,300 p.) and 5th NPO Salbris (5,746 p.).
NL16-1663942, Daughter New Harry
And we can honestly say that Daughter New Harry has some fantastic origins as well. Just like Special New Harry (see below), this Daughter New Harry is a daughter of New Harry, the son of Special Harry, which is in turn a son of Harry. The dam (NL14-073) is a daughter of Harry. You can tell from the achievements of her descendants that Daughter New Harry has the same qualities as her forefathers. To begin with, she is grandmother of a 4th Ace pigeon national NPO Allround 2020.
NL13-1395608, Harry 608
Harry 608 is a son of the phenomenal Harry. The dam was inbred to Kannibaal (Dirk van Dyck), just like the sire of the aforementioned Cannonball Harry. Youngsters and grandchildren have won numerous top results, and this year a grandchild became 4th Ace Pigeon national NPO Allround 2020.
NL16-1663889, Special New Harry
There is a reason why Special New Harry has the word Special in her name. Her sire is New Harry, and he is a son of Special Harry, which is in turn a son of Harry. The dam is Laatje '707, and she is a daughter of none other than Harry. Special New Harry has been an invaluable breeding bird as well. She is the dam of a 9th National ace pigeon one day long distance 2017, 7th prov. ace pigeon YBs 2018, and many others.
The last pigeon that we wanted to introduce and that clearly belongs to this list of absolute top breeders is Issi. The sire of Issi is NL11-096, and he comes from Anne van Meerkerk. The dam is NL12-099, and she is a daughter of super class bird De 230 (Dick van Oort). Issi won a 1st National Issoudun of 13,906 p., and she bred the following prize winners:
