Stéphane Defoort (Maubray, BE) wins 1st national zone Libourne old birds

This is a victory that pleased many fanciers; the winner is a friendly hairdresser from Maubray (near Tournai), who managed to win the first prize in zone B after a very hard race from Libourne.

A unique picture: Stéphane with one of his pigeons

In Wallonia (The French-speaking part of Belgium) Stéphane is considered a true gentleman. He is a true pigeon fancier in heart & mind. He is fond of pigeons and he has a great respect for it. He has always been a modest man, even though he has a list of achievements that would make many other fanciers jealous. He will never critise his opponents. If you can beat him he will be happy for you. He is a great fancier with great sportsmanship!

It was at the begining of the new millenium when he decided to join our sport, after his brother Eric passed away. He quickly gained an interest and he made great results. It is mainly thanks to his youngsters that he liked to race a lot in the national races. They were entered in all national races on the calendar and Stéphane achieved some great performances with them with numerous top 10 prizes at provincial level and several national top 100 positions. He then decided to focus more on the long distance races. His pigeon breed, based on Marcel Vandenabeele (multiple winner of 2nd national prizes), Chris Hebberecht and the late Fernand Frédéric (Bléharies), was perfectly suited for this hard work and his racing team soon won several top 100 national prizes. Stéphane could also count on his ''Gamin'', an incredible racer who finished in the provincial ace pigeon ranking long distance several times before becoming a wonderful breeder. But it was too good to be true.

Stéphane runs a busy hairdressing business so he had no more time to take care of his loft. That explains the lack of results since 2009. He tried to hire a loft manager several times but none of them were good enough. In fact, is there any pigeon fancier capable of working hard while having a successful career in pigeon racing without the help of someone else? I don’t think so. During the season the pigeons were released outside for their daily training and they often had nobody to call them back inside, which means they sometimes stayed outside the whole day. Stéphane simply had no time to wait for them and call them inside. He really did not want things to go like this so he considered quitting the sport but he did not want to. It was eventually a radical change in his private life that made him decide to leave the sport after all. While you are reading this report Stéphane will be in the south of France starting a new life, without his hairdressing business and without pigeons. However, he likes pigeons so much that he decided to bring some of his older pigeons with him. They will be enjoying the sunny days in France as well.

Despite the lack of time Stéphane achieved some great performances this season, mostly on Libourne and Narbonne:

- 06/07 Libourne Iprov (681 km) - 1.635 olds:
1 (1.004 m/min), 9, 211 (3/4)
- 06/07 Libourne Nat Zone - 2,215 olds:
1, 18, 334 (3/4)
- 26/07 Narbonne Iprov (823 km) - 959 yearlings:
16, 26, 35 (3/7)
- 26/07 Narbonne Nat - 3,942 yearlings:
49, 79, 93 (3/7)
- 26/07 Narbonne Inat - 7,859 yearlings:
73, 133, 152 (3/7)

His entire colony was sold in october but Stéphane decided to reserve his best racers for PIPA. We will only focus on the best of them. Check their performance list and keep in mind that the pigeons that were not included in this report are equally talented!
