Eddy and Maarten Leutenez (Kruishoutem, BE) excel with descendants of "Het Bolleken"

We can think of only a handful of fanciers that have managed to win races on a weekly basis with a small group of racing birds, and Eddy and his son Maarten are definitely one of them. They have won 6 national victories so far, which is an achievement many of their rivals can only dream of.

Born with a passion…

Eddy Leutenez is a dyed-in-the-whool pigeon fancier. Some would say he was born in a nest bowl rather than in a cradle, which shows that Eddy developed a passion for pigeon racing at a very early age. He kept his first pigeons in Gavere, he developed into a nationally renowned champion and he eventually gained the status of a superchampion in his loft in Semmerzake. Journalists referred to him as Eddy "Stuntman" Leutenez, which goes to show that he was running an exceptional team of racing birds that at times outclassed their rivals. His palmares includes 6 national first prizes, 4 national second prizes, as well as several provincial and national ace pigeon titles. Unfortunately his success story came to a sudden end in 2003 due to a health issue (a lung problem).

Eddy and his family moved to a new home in Kruishoutem, intending to leave his pigeon family behind. But things turned out differently: his son Maarten regained an interest in pigeon racing after completing his studies, and his father Eddy was more than happy to make a comeback together with his son. The duo took a fresh start in Kruishoutem in 2007, with Eddy acting as the team's manager, helping his son to achieve great results and watching the action from the first row. Maarten is a genuine pigeon fancier , who created a professional framework for the team.

An eye for top birds

How does one go about making a fresh start? Well, Eddy Leutenez knows a thing or two about pigeon racing. First of all, he knows that it takes a team of top class pigeons to achieve great results, and so Eddy and Maarten wanted to obtain back some pigeons from their old breed. They purchased pigeons of their own Milan bloodline from Marc De Cock, who also introduced them to the lines of Superbreeder and Eagle Eye of Eric Limbourg. Father and son Leutenez also obtained descendants of the invaluable De Rauw-Sablon pigeon breed and of Benny Steveninck's renowned Chipo. In fact, the grandmother of Chipo was a hen of Leutenez: Daughter Patron x Nikita (the top pair that also bred Milo, 1st Nat. Ace Pigeon KBDB '97).

It was soon clear that Eddy had an eye for top quality pigeons: José Denoyette (Ooike), a pigeon fancier from around the area, had won a 1st interprovincial Tours against 2,257 YBs in a particularly demanding race with a lot of headwind, and Eddy knew he wanted to see this racing hen up close. He was quite impressed with the bird, which he thought would fit in well with the team. This was the pigeon he had been looking for. The two fanciers made a deal and "Het Bolleken" was transferred to the Leutenez pigeon lofts. Her parents would follow soon.

Het Bolleken and her dam Rita

The bloodlines of "Het Bolleken" and her two parents turned out to be an invaluable addition to the team of Eddy and Maarten. Their descendants were capable of winning first prizes at provincial and zonal level, they did great in the one loft races and they won many national ace pigeon titles as well. They turned this team into an internationlly regarded pigeon family, based around Het Bolleken and her dam Rita. Their bloodlines can be found in the pedigrees of almost every successful Leutenez racing bird. Click here for the breeding references of Rita.

Their exceptional team of breeders soon enabled Eddy and Maarten Leutenez to become one of the top performers at national level. Eddy Leutenez soon regained his status as a national champion. Let's take a look at the achievements of their most successful racing birds.

Each of these talented pigeons comes from the invaluable line of Rita and Het bolleken. These pigeons have enabled team Leutenez to become one of the leading lofts after their comeback in 2007, making it one of the most valuable bloodlines at international level.

A shift towards the long distance

In the first part of his career in Semmerzake Eddy became a national top player in the longer middle distance, especially with the young birds. National longer middle distance races for olds and yearlings were rather uncommon back then (except for the national races from Bourges). His current racing team in Kruishoutem is increasingly aiming towards the long distance (600-800km). The reason is he wants to compete in the races where his pigeons can really shine, where they can show their potential at national level. This change in direction enabled team Leutenez to come to the fore in the international competition, winning most notably the title of 8th Nat. Champion long distance YLs in 2016, besides many top prizes and ace pigeon titles. Their palmares of 2016 needs no further explanation:

1st Provincial Limoges 2,244 p. 2015
1st National Zone A Tulle 3,358 p. 2015
2nd National Limoges 8,301 p. 2015

One of the stars of the racing team for the national long distance races is without doubt Zomer Jong. He is an inbred youngster based on the world class Dream Pair of De Rauw-Sablon. This talented pigeon showed his potential in last year's races from Vierzon and Tulle, and he continued to peform well in 2016:

The pigeon team from Kruishoutem is small in numbers yet has great potential. Eddy and Maarten show that it does not take a large group of pigeons to become a renowned pigeon loft. What you do need is a group of top quality pigeons, which is why their pigeons have to meet high demands: they do not want to spend their time raising unsuccessful pigeons. Their approach appears to be paying off, not only in their own loft but also for other fanciers (see below).
The Bollekens dynasty is a force to be reckoned with. Eddy and Maarten Leutenez have a great future ahead thanks to the breeding value of their pigeon family!
