Paul Gevaert and Carlos Lannoo: the men behind the successful Gevaert-Lannoo team
A highly talented breed
Achieving great results every season with a small racing team is always impressive. It is quite a challenge for a small group of pigeons to try and beat the great champions with their considerable larger pigeon families in the national races. It requires you to get the most out of your racing birds, iespecially if you intend to win first prizes and top results on a regular basis. It is the success formula of Gevaert-Lannoo!
Their lack of space forces them to be very demanding. Only the very best pigeons get a place in the team, and this is the secret behind their remarkably strong pigeon breed. Good quality pigeons are not allowed here; only super class racing birds can join the Gevaert-Lannoo team. The two fanciers are not thinking about expanding their loft either. Why would they?
They have a group of no more than 12 pairs of old and one year old pigeons raced in total widowhood (which makes for 24 racing pigeons in total), as well as a group of about 40 young birds raced with the sliding door – that number has usually reduced to 25 or 30 by the start of the season. That’s it.
Numerous titles and ace pigeons at provincial and national level
You cannot expect provincial and national titles and ace pigeons to happen overnight. It takes super class pigeons to claim such titles, and we think not many fanciers can match the level of performance (and the number of titles) of the Gevaert-Lannoo pigeons. This is clearly a small but potent breed:
1st Prov. Champion long distance young birds KBDB East Fl. 2015 (1+2 nominated) 1st Prov. Ace Pigeon middle distance young birds KBDB East Fl. 2015 2nd General Champion KBDB East Fl. 2015 4th National Champion young birds KBDB 2015 (national races) 5th Nat. This is quite a palmares!
This breed is still mainly based on pigeons of Gaby Vandenabeele, and the successful bloodline of Chateauke and her daughter Kaafje in particular, as well as the line of the world famous Bliksem (with Bliksem CEO, Bliksem Rik, Bliksem Gaby). These pigeons came either directly from Dentergem or were obtained from successful Vandenabeele based lofts. These pigeons have enabled Gevaert-Lannoo to gain an international reputation, but they were most of all excellent breeders, capable of breeding new generations of talented young birds. To illustrate, we take a look at some of the leading names of 2015:
-Platina BE15-4146027
1st Prov. Ace Pigeon middle distance young birds KBDB 2015 5th Nat. Ace Pigeon shorter middle distance young birds KBDB 2015 Chateaudun Club 590 p. 1 Prov. 4,634 p. 15 Villemandeur Club 345 p. 1 Prov. 2,885 p. 20 Fontenay Club 748 p. 3 Fontenay Club 412 p. 4 Issoudun Prov. 2,874 p. 25 Nat. 11,984 p. 96 Arras Club 384 p. 9 Fontenay Club 737 p. 24 Bourges Prov. 4,490 p. 145
The results in bold led to the title of provincial ace pigeon. This wonderful hen comes from inline breeding based on the old line of Oude Antoon, which comes from Willy Vanhoutte from Wevelgem. She is also related to the invaluable lines of Chateauke (Team BDS and G.Vandenabeele), the line of Fiddeel (Houfflijn-Vandenabeele) and Red National (Marc De Cock).

This shows that the two most successful young birds of 2015 are closely related. The star of the old birds’ team was the one year old hen Caraat, which is heavily based on Bliksem. Caraat was one of Belgium’s great stars in the first series of seven national longer middle distance races, as the 7th best pigeon of Belgium:
-Caraat BE14-4032006
7th Best yearling of Belgium over 7 national races (first series of 7 consecutive national races) 6th N.Zone Chateauroux I 8,291 p. ’15 (Club 818 p. 1) 9th Prov Chateaudun 410 p. ’15 40th N.Zone Gueret 4,878 p. ’15 45th Nat La SOuterraine II 2,548 p. ’15 93rd Prov Argenton I 4,749 p. ’15 280th Nat Argenton I 19,925 p. ’15 125th N.Zone Bourges I 4,930 p. ’15 126th N.Zone La Souterraine 4,610 p. ’14 244th N.Zone Bourges 2,976 p. ’15
Keep in mind we have only included the prizes at least per ten.
As in many other lofts, the key to success for the fanciers of Gevaert-Lannoo is to breed pigeons from proven racing birds and ace pigeons, and from their direct descendants. Paul and Carlos will not hesitate to transfer their provincial or national ace pigeons and their best prize winners to the breeding loft. It not only allows you to create a very talented team of breeders, it also keeps your breeding loft young and full of life. This is how you get the most out of your pigeon family. It shows that smart thinking is more important than having a large collection of pigeons.
