Freddy & Jacques Vandenheede (Zingem, BE) are first national champion extreme long distance yearlings KBDB 2014

This adds to a total of five national championship and ace pigeon titles in just three years’ time, which is quite impressive. These national titles were won by a pigeon loft that has dominated the field for years.

National dominance

There are not that many fanciers capable of claiming national titles and ace pigeon titles on a yearly basis. This is something only the world’s strongest pigeon lofts can achieve, and Freddy and Jacques Vandenheede have amazed us with an impressive number of national titles and ace pigeons in recent seasons. They won the title of General Champion of Belgium KBDB in 2012, and they were equally successful in 2013, winning the title of 1st nat. Ace Pigeon long distance old birds KBDB, 1st nat. Ace Pigeon longer middle distance yearlings KBDB and 1st nat. Champion long distance yearlings KBDB. They managed to claim their third consecutive national title in 2014, winning the national championship title extreme long distance KBDB yearlings.

Freddy and Jacques won no less than six national championship prizes in 2014, as well as 6 provincial prizes KBDB East Flanders. An overview:

1st Nat. Champion Extreme Long Distance Yearlings KBDB 2014
2nd Nat. Ace Pigeon Extreme Long Distance Yearlings KBDB 2014
4th Nat. Ace Pigeon Extreme Long Distance Yearlings KBDB 2014
7th Nat. Champion Longer Middle Distance Old Birds KBDB 2014
8th Nat. Ace Pigeon Longer Middle Distance Old Birds KBDB 2014
8th Nat. Champion Long Distance Old Birds KBDB 2014

2nd General Prov. Champion KBDB East Flanders 2014
3rd Prov. Champion Long Distance Old Birds & Yearlings 1+2 KBDB 2014
4th Prov. Ace Pigeon Middle Distance Young Birds KBDB 2014
5th Prov. Ace Pigeon Long Distance Old Birds KBDB 2014
5th Prov. Champion Middle Distance Old Birds & Yearlings 1+2 KBDB 2014
11th Prov. Ace Pigeon Middle Distance Old Birds KBDB 2014

Freddy and Jacques agreed to start working together in 2008 instead of being each others’ closest rivals, and we were quite confident that the whole would be greater than the sum of its parts. Many fanciers have actually been less successful in a combination but that was not the case with Freddy and Jacques. We assumed that a combination of two top class pigeon lofts and two highly motivated fanciers would lead to spectacular results. Seven years later, they have proved to be a great combination indeed.

We can all agree that Freddy and Jacques have played a defining role in the national competition in recent seasons, with a team of pigeons that often dominated the competition. In some races their pigeons were simply impossible to beat. It seemed as if their pigeons were way too strong, especially since they started racing a team of old cocks in the long distance and the extreme long distance as a combination. Meanwhile, their yearlings and hens continued to impose their will in the provincial and national longer middle distance as well. Their dominant game is often taken for granted these days, as if we have grown used to it. Make no mistake; every fancier knows from experience that such a consistent level of performance is something quite exceptional.

Their secret? superior ace pigeons and champions in the breeding loft

2014 was another anniversary season for the Vandenheede family, as they have been at the top of our sport for exactly 50 years now. Their success story started back in 1964 with stock sire De Zieken, and it continued to this day, with such cracks as Annelise, Miracle Ace, nest brothers Ace Marsupilami I & II, and Science Ace.

Their continuity illustrates the strength of their breeding team, which has been able to breed new ace pigeons and national champions season after season. This breeding loft is an invaluable source of top class pigeons, and it is the number one secret behind the overwhelming success of the Vandenheede family. In fact, they have never sold any of their national winners or national ace pigeons. Each one of them was moved to the Vandenheede breeding loft, to provide future prize winners.

Pairing top quality bloodlines has always been the number one strategy for the fanciers from Zingem, who have been quite successful with this approach. We have never seen such a collection of talented breeders under one roof. We talked you through the Vandenabeele breeding loft in our report last year, which you can find here. Freddy and Jacques will take any opportunity to invest in top quality pigeons. For instance, their latest reinforcements include Bender (1st Nat. Ace Pigeon Longer Middle Distance KBDB 2012) and Chanel N°1 (1st Nat. Chateauroux young birds 2013), just to name a few.

A proven concept

A second pillar to their success is their proven concept, which has remained unchanged over the years. In fact there is no need for change if everything goes well, but for a few minor adjustments depending on the circumstances. The old and one year old cocks and hens continue to be raced in classic widowhood, which means the partners stay at home. The hens are basketed every week if possible (depending on the difficulty of the races); the cocks are basketed every two or at least three weeks (in the long distance). The young birds are still raced from the nest.

This has been their approach for years, and it proved to be a successful approach indeed. Having to compete with the Vandenheede pigeons has always been quite a task, and it always will be. Vandenheede pigeons are true killers with a constant urge to win prizes.

The national ace pigeons KBDB of 2014

Besides their title of 1st Nat. Champion Extreme Long Distance Yearlings KBDB, Freddy and Jacques have also managed to win three national ace pigeon titles. The two pigeons that earned the national title extreme long distance are actually two nest brothers, Ace Marsupilami I and II.

These two parents have bred an impressive number of top class descendants. Both Annelise and her half brother Miracle Ace will ensure the continuation of this invaluable bloodline in the Vandenheede lofts. We were not surprised that Freddy quite fancies this Annelise, which is a breeder for the future.

High hopes for 2015

The Vandenheede pigeon loft is home to an impressive group of pigeons. As always, champions have in turn bred new champions, and the Vandenheede ace pigeons have bred a new generation of ace pigeons as well. Every breeding pair in this pigeon family originates from true champions and ace pigeons, and they are capable of bringing new generations of equally talented and promising new youngsters, ready to follow in the footsteps of their older loft mates. This creates a sense of confidence, as Freddy and Jacques can look forward to the start of every new season, knowing that they have a talented racing team.

50 years of dominance in pigeon racing is impossible to overlook. Freddy and Jacques followed in the footsteps of their father René, becoming some of the leading names in modern day pigeon racing. The two are often considered the very best fanciers of today.
