Freialdenhofen & Sons (Aldenhoven, DE) have won the 1st National from Pau in Germany

They had already won the international first prize from Pau in 2012 and this season they took the first, the third and the fourth national prize for Germany in the classic race from Pau. This makes Heinz-Josef and his two sons Dirk and Heiko Freialdenhofen the the true specialists in the long distance competition in Germany.

But first things first: the international race from Pau took place on 14 June, 8,527 pigeons were released at 6:45. It was slightly cloudy and there was a gentle northeast wind. There was an east wind throughout the day and all along the flight line, which obviously influenced the arrival of the fastest pigeons. The first three international pigeons came from the UK. This has never happened before, as far as I can remember. The English Channel is often considered a serious drawback to any English pigeon fancier. However, things were different thanks to the wind. The pigeon family of GG Cooper and CJ Cooper has won the international first prize in a race of 904.206km. Their winning pigeon arrived at the loft already at 17:12’26” with a velocity of 1,315.34 m/min. It was not surprising that the pigeon fanciers that live in the east were a lot less successful. This became apparent in the results as well. One man’s meat is the other man’s poison.

The first National at 21:04'33"

The Freialdenhofen family saw their Forrest Gump Junior (06348-11-403) arrive at the loft at 21:04’33” after a race of 981.836 km, which was enough to claim the first national prize against 1,038 pigeons. The second pigeon arrived at that same loft at 21:43’08” and ten minutes later their third pigeon from Pau landed in Aldenhoven, at 21:54’28”. These two pigeons have won the third and fourth national prize in this race. This is an impressive achievement and it illustrates that the pigeon loft of Freialdenhofens houses a collection of long distance pigeons of very high quality. For those interested, the second national prize from Pau was won by the well known pigeon loft of Schlömer from Mönchengladbach.

The first, third and fourth prize in the national results

It is always interesting to have a look at the origins of the winning pigeons. The first prize was for the blue coloured cock 06348-11-403, which is no stranger: he has won quite a few top prizes in the 2012 season, including a 22nd national from Bordeaux against 1,272 pigeons and a 166 international against 10,622 pigeons. In the international race from Narbonne he took a 1,674th prize against 11,000 pigeons. And now in 2013 he won a great national first prize. Nothing comes from nothing in pigeon racing. The sire of their national winner is the famous Forrest Gump 06348-00-789, which won the title of Third International Ace Pigeon 2002 and which is the sire of several well known Ace Pigeons and prizewinners. Forrest Gump is actually a highly successful crossing of Max (NL 97-2039867) and a daughter of De 848 (B 96-2270528) of the Van de Poel/Buckley pigeon family.
And then there is the dam of Forrest Gump Junior, which is not an unknown quantity either. She is the Sister Pozzato NL 06-1437042 of Wijnands & Son. This hen is the dam and the grandmother of a long list of national winners and international top prize winners. She is the sister of the First International Bordeaux 2004 against 9,001 pigeons. We all know that good bloodlines will pay off eventually. This pigeon has quite impressive origins. Click here to see the origins of the national winner of Germany.

The third prize in the national ranking was for 06348-10-138, Son of First National Bordeaux. Indeed, this pigeon is a son of the First National from Bordeaux. His sire, the Red Bordeaux 06348-08-711, took the national victory against 1,451 pigeons in 2009. This cock originates from Sister Pozzato as well, the dam of Forrest Gump Junior. The dam of the Son First National Bordeaux is the hen with ring number 06348-08-912. In brief, she is a great-granddaughter of Forrest Gump from her father’s side. Doesn’t that say it all?

The national winner in the hand

The fourth national prize was won by the two year old cock Doffertje 474 (06348-11-474). He is also related to Forrest Gump via his grandparents. The dam of the 474 is Kleine Donkere (B 08-5093644) and he is a great-grandchild of the exceptional breeder Forrest Gump on his mother’s side. The sire of the 474 is Doffertje 736 (06348-05-736). This is also a great breeder with excellent descendants.

Something more about Forrest Gump

The Forrest Gump 06348-00-789 has developed into a stock breeder of exceptional quality in the lofts of Freialdenhofen. His son, Son Forrest Gump 06348-05-420, is the sire of Forrest Junior 06348-10-196, proud winner of the first International from Pau in 2012. Forrest Gump forms the old basis and originates from the bloodlines of the Saya brothers from The Netherlands and Yves Van de Poel/Buckley (Geetbets, BE). The dam of Forrest Junior was a daughter Carcassonne (06348-07-616), which has bred quite a few great descendants as well. Forrest Junior has already been paired to Sister Pozzato (NL 06-1437042) of Wijnands & Son, the dam of for instance the First National Bordeaux against 1,451 pigeons in 2009. In case you wonder why Forrest Gump (06348-00-789) was paired to Sister Pozzato in the 2011 season, just take a look at the pedigrees. This will give you a better idea of the breeding strategies of the Freialdenhofen family. We want to emphasize that the Freialdenhofen fanciers are true masters in the breeding loft and that explains why they have become so successful in the marathon competitions.

Something more about the Freialdenhofen pigeon family

Over the years they have taken part in most international races and they have won great prizes regularly. This family consists of father Heinz-Josef (born in 1943) and his two sons Dirk (born in 1970) and Heiko (born in 1976). Their father has had pigeons since he was seven years old. He used to take part in the races of the German calendar, in which he was quite strong. When his son Dirk started assisting his father in the lofts they thought about joining the international races from Barcelona, Pau, Dax, Marseille and Perpignan. That was in the late 1980s and the early 1990s. It was then that Dirk Freialdenhofen met Albert Simons from Maaseik, who lived in The Netherlands back then.  This fancier has had a great influence on the Freialdenhofen pigeon loft. From then on the fanciers from Aldenhoven focused on the long distance races. A few years later, in 1991, they purchased eggs and pigeons from Albert Simons and these pigeons would later become the basis of their pigeon breed. One of their stock cocks is Doffertje 733 (NL 91-2899733) and he is the grandchild of Oud Doffertje 4. This pigeon was in turn a son of the legendary Oud Doffertje of Antoon and Lucy van der Wegen, paired to a daughter of Perpignan, winner of a first National from Perpignan. Doffertje 733 turned into an outstanding breeding pigeon for Freialdenhofen. They did not limit themselves to the pigeons of albert Simons however. They also purchased pigeons from Saya from Maastricht (NL) and Yves Van de Poel-Buckley (Geetsbets, BE), etc. One thing is for sure: they wanted nothing but top class pigeons, descendants from successful racing pigeons.
