Schmitt Kenji, "1st National Argenton 5974 yearlings (2007)"

Schmitt Kenji, Averbode (BE)

2007, the year of the youth. In the Brabantse language they are “already” the men to beat in the extreme middle distance… In Rummen there is Davy Tournelle who this year won the double from Bourges and now from Argenton it is the turn of the 20 year old Kenji Schmitt to victor. There is no better way to promote the world of pigeon racing…

Kenji had been hoping and dreaming of repeating his stunt from last year. Then we achieved the 4th national Argenton youngsters with the “Young Vic” against 14498 opponents.
Kenji only basketted 2 yearlings for Argenton, the reason being he only had two pigeons…

Up until last year Kenji only raced with youngsters and was sometimes teased that he didn’t dare to race with old pigeons… this upset him, so this year he decided to keep a couple of youngsters and race with yearlings. But because he didn’t have any room for them he was forced to place these young hens with the youngsters. These two yearlings began showing signs of lesbianism so Kenji transferred them to the loft housing the young cocks.

On the Tuesday before basketting for Argenton he placed the 2 hens in a cardboard box on the loft floor. There was also a nest dish with two eggs placed in the box… it took a while before the ladies started brooding, but it worked… on the Thursday these 2 ladies were basketted after brooding for two days. Kenji read time and again that the hen who always won the 1st national was often described as being “ in form”. His hens were also in form, but the 1st nationally… that was more than he dared to dream about… nothing could be further from the truth. At 14h30 the 2083062/06 raced to the trap and fifteen minutes later her friend followed and was clocked at 14h46, and was also early.

Kenji’s result from Argenton is super;
1st & 3rd Locally (Trestle) 78p.
1st & 25th Provincially 678p.
1st & top 100 nationally against 5974 pigeons
All this with 2 basketted yearlings.
The results from the youngsters were also excellent. Kenji basketted 26 youngsters and achieved locally 18 prizes which means a prize percentage of 69%
Locally it was against 492 youngsters; 2-5-6-10-13-27-31-32-…
Provincially against 3088 youngsters; 42-72-80-… and 17/26
Nationally he will probably be in the in de top 100.
The National winner has the ring number 2083062/06 and was given the name “Joy”.
Kenji is not a man who begins racing early in the season, his yearling hens have only been basketted a few times. And still “Joy” has achieved this season the following;
2nd Dude Lange 178p. (after her loft mate)
15th Bourges 100p.

And in 2006
24th National Zone C Gueret 2735 youngsters
Etc…

Her father is: “De Gommaire” (2141263/05 ) and comes straight from the loft of Gommaire Verbruggen.

The mother
of “Joy” is: “Dragoon” (2235443/02) and was also a good racer. “Dragoon” comes from a pairing from Vanwinkel Francine (Aarschot) x “Xena” and is one of the stock pigeons of Kenji’s loft.

The preparations
Seeing both young and old are kept in the same loft, they all receive the same treatment.
When they return home on the Saturday the pigeons are always given 50 % sport mixture from Versele-laga and 50 % diet from Mariman. On Sunday they are given 100 % diet and then they are fed sport mixture and the amount is increased until the day of basketting.

When the pigeons arrive home they are given a mix of 3 products in the drinking water consisting of electrolytes, a stomach/intestine product and a purification product. The following day they are given sheep fat + optimix over the food and amino acid in the water.

Monday they are given hopps + extra form, followed by optimix + Zell Oxygen on tuesday. Wednesday they are once again given sheep fat over the food and Ducolvit 500 in the drinking water. On Thursday 4 oliën (4 oils) is poured over the food and a few hours before basketting they are given as much sport mixture as they can eat.
The medical side is in the hands of the vet Raf Herbots and his advice is followed and medicine given accordingly.

Pedigree
In order to succeed in the world of pigeon racing one has to have good pigeons… as Kenji is well aware. He visited, amongst others; Patrick & Guido Claes, Verbruggen, Kees Bosua, Gaby Van Den Abeele, Michel Van Lint, Dick Postma, Vos-Jennes, Engels J & J, Peeters Fabienne, Francois Everaerts and Staf Vos. He bought offspring from the best pigeons from the best fanciers!... only the best is good enough.

Conclusion
Young and dynamic, that’s how we describe Kenji Schmitt . Breeding, racing and selecting is his biggest pleasure… He is also pleased that he can now rely on his new girlfriend Jody Serrè to take care of his pigeons when he is working… or is this a case of… a woman in the loft, an early pigeon at the trap?
