Helmut & Alfons Klaas (Rietberg, DE) are tough to beat in one loft races worldwide!

Their pigeons have won some of the most important flights and they are always at the top of the results in major races. Remarkable results have been achieved with quite a small team of pigeons, each of which are true winners with great potential. This report is about the pigeon family of Helmut and Alfons Klaas from Rietberg (DE).

Helmut and Alfons Klaas

The Helmut & Alfons Klaas pigeon family

Let’s take a closer look at the pigeon family itself, which is led by Helmut Klaas (75) and his son Alfons (48). They competed in Club Rietberg and in the region for several years and they did really well, winning quite a number of top prizes. Helmut has been a pigeon fancier for many years. At first, he ran a pigeon loft together with his twin brother Herbert and an older brother but he started keeping pigeons on his own after he moved to his own house. His then seven year old son Alfons got involved in the sport as well in 1972 and this was the start of the SG Helmut & Alfons Klaas. Today, Alfons sets the strategy in this pigeon loft. That is how the amazingly successful pigeon loft of Helmut and Alfons Klaas came into existence.

One Million Dollar Pigeon Race

A few weeks ago, on 25 January 2014, they achieved another outstanding result: they did not win the first prize but they had three pigeons in the top 50, which is amazing. More about that later.
Their most spectacular results were won in the Sun City Million Dollar Race, the biggest one loft race worldwide. Helmut and Alfons Klaas have won the Sun City Million Dollar Race with one of their pigeons twice already and we would not be surprised to see them claim another victory sooner or later, simply because of the outstanding quality of the Klaas pigeon breed and their impressive sense of orientation, which makes them particularly tough to beat. They are quick at getting used to a new environment as well; they will feel at home in a new loft right away. Some pigeons never seem to be able to get used to a new loft while others have no problems adapting to a new home. This is the type of pigeon you should look for if you want to be successful in a one loft race, especially if they originate from great bloodlines as well. They are bound to win great prizes in one loft races.

Let’s take a closer look at their two winning pigeons. We begin with their first important victory, which was the start of a successful career for Helmut and Alfons Klaas.

1. Helmut and Alfons claim the victory in the 11th Sun City Million Dollar Pigeon Race 2007 with Konstantin 0507-06-860, which originates from the pair 0507-03-994 x 0507-96-660. His sire 994 is a son of ace pigeon 0507-97-180 paired to 0507-01-123, originating from Steenbergen- Kösters. The 180 won 12 prizes in 13 flights in 1999, good for 1,070 ace points. Several of his grandchildren have won top 100 prizes as well. Konstantin’s dam 660 was bred from ace pigeon Tim paired to breeding hen Konstance. This was their first important victory and they won a prize of 200,000 dollars.
2. Their second victory came four years later in the 15th Sun City Million Dollar Race in 2011, with the Kitchenbrand loft, the team of Mark Kitchenbrand and Alfons Klaas, winning the first prize with Victor, a cock that was bred by Helmut and Alfons Klaas.
The pigeons were released on Saturday 22 January 2011 at 7:35 in Hopetown for the 15th Sun City Million Dollar Race. They were to cover a total of 526km in a slight headwind and a temperature of 22 degrees. A small number of pigeons broke away from the main group of 2,575 pigeons early in the race but we do not know if this is the group that arrived at the loft first. The first pigeon arrived back in Sun City after just over nine hours: the winning pigeon Victor was clocked at 16:37’03”. In 2011, no less than six pigeons that were bred in the loft of Klaas managed to finish in the top 300.
The sire of Victor is Contador 0507-03-577 and the dam is Naomie 0507-08-980. Contador originates from Pantani 0507-95-511, which is also bred from ace pigeons Tim x Constance. The dam Naomie originates from a half brother of Konstantin x Juwelchen 01769-07-100 of Andreas and Walter Drapa, bred from Carl x Daughter Maya, which makes for quite an impressive pedigree.

These two examples clearly indicate the excellent quality of the pigeons of Helmut and Alfons Klaas, all of which originate from great breeding lines. The partners are often highly inbred and they are then crossed with other bloodlines. The pigeon family of Helmut and Alfons Klaas is really a breed on its own: this breed has been carefully composed over the course of many years (since 1987/1988) and was further improved with the introduction of excellent pigeons. This is a pigeon breed that is hard to match.

25 January 2014

The pigeon loft of Helmut and Alfons Klaas has recently had another impressive result, again in the Million Dollar Pigeon Race in South Africa. 3,478 pigeons were still in the race and were released at 6 o’clock in the morning to cover 661km. It turned out to be another very demanding race. The winning pigeon arrived at the loft at 15:43’49” with a 2 minute lead over the second pigeon. There was quite a gap between the best pigeons in the race. The 16th pigeon, a pigeon of Helmut and Alfons Klaas, arrived home at 16:58’20”, which is more than one hour after the first pigeon. The second and third pigeon of Helmut & Alfons Klaas, Hurrican and Hasty, finished in 44th and 46th respectively. Hurrican was also 3rd Grand Average Ace Pigeon against 5,808 pigeons at international level and 1st Grand Average Ace Pigeon of Germany against 1,562 pigeons. Alfons Jr. was 4th Grand Average Ace Pigeon against 5,808 pigeons at international level and 2nd Grand Average Ace Pigeon against 1,562 pigeons in Germany. A total of 53 pigeons managed to arrive home on the first day, including three pigeons of Helmut & Alfons Klaas, who had 18 pigeons in the final race. No other fancier had three pigeons arrive at the loft, which means the Klaas pigeons did exceptionally well that day. This was something no other fancier could achieve. This shows once again that the Klaas pigeons are of exceptional quality, as we discussed earlier in this article.

A brief overview of their other results in One Loft Races in 2013

The Klaas pigeon family had a great start to the season in January 2013: Purdey DV 05369-12-1121, bred by Helmut and Alfons Klaas and basketed by team Klaas-Esser, was 1st Grand Average Ace Pigeon and it won a third prize in the final race. The dam came from the loft of Hans-Paul Esser and team Klaas-Esser had purchased his dam on PIPA.
A pigeon of Klaas won a first prize at the Carnival City Race over 521km with a 47 minute with a strong headwind and 35 °C. They also won a first Ace Pigeon Grand Average.
In March, the pigeon Gallopin Garbaga of SG Klaas won the first prize in the final race of the Derby Arona Teneriffa, after completing 300km overseas. He was also 2nd Ace Pigeon Grand Average. In addition, he won a 16th place in the Portugal Algarve Race in October.
The SG Klaas won a 15th prize in the Peking Race (China) against 3,812 pigeons in 2012; it was the first European pigeon in the race.
These are all outstanding results, and they are the result of the amazing potential of the Klaas pigeons, which perform in all possible conditions. This means this pigeon breed continues to be a team to watch in the important one loft races worldwide.
