A report on the British Barcelona Club race from St Philbert on 18th June 2022

Twenty-two members sent two hundred and fifty-nine pigeons to St Philbert with the British Barcelona Club. They were liberated at 06.45CEST into blue skies and broken cloud. The following is a report on the provisional result based on members' verifications.

Dennis Baker of Maidenhead timed five pigeons in the top twenty of the result, taking first, third, fourth, fifth and eighth open and the first five positions in section D. This is Dennis's second BBC win of the season and first on the clock was a yearling hen on 1205ypm over 287 miles. The four grandparents of this winner are Southfield Champ (1st NFC Saintes) x daughter Che (2 x 1st NPO) and Rolex (1st NFC Saintes) x The 139 (1st open NFC Messac). The next two to time were both three year olds on 1145 and 1122ypm, followed by a four year old on 1071ypm. The second on the clock contains mainly Sablon bloodlines through the Gilbert 1st international Bordeaux winner. Finally, Dennis clocked another four year old on 1054ypm. The race winner has now been named Challen after the 1970 Palamos winner W Challen of Cookham Dean. 

Booth & Roper

Booth and Roper of Tewkesbury were second open and first section C with a three year old hen on 1164ypm over a distance of 333 miles. Raced on the partners' version of the roundabout system this hen contains their old established Van Den Bosche x Dordin bloodlines with some of their French hen in the mix. It was their fancier birds and it came through the storms flying nearly fifty miles further than the winner. The dam, French Magic was a top racer for the loft taking cards from Falaise, Carentan, Le Mans and Guernsey. The grandsire, Sportsview TJ won from Messac and Ancenis. 

Kevin Foster

Kevin Foster of Longfield Hill was sixth open and first section G with a two year old on 1069ypm over 276 miles. Kevin timed a dark widowhood cock bred by John Crehan from his Hooymans Harry family of pigeons. 

Bob Pegler

The Downton loft of R Pegler and Son timed a two year old on 1068ypm over 260 miles to take seventh open and first section A. Bob and Mark's winner is a widowhood co0ck, the sire of which was bred by Roy Orchard and contains Kirkpatrick bloodlines. The dam was bred down from the Snake by Geoff Kirkland. 

Rogers & Sales

Clive and Jill Rogers and Neil Sales of Writhlington timed a two year old on 1015ypm over 290 miles to take ninth open and second section C. The partners' winner was bred from a Padfield cock that in turn was bred from a half-brother to the Dream Maker crossed with a daughter of Iron Lady and a grand-daughter of Indy. The dam came from Ray Strawbridge of City Lofts and contains Jan Aarden and Padfield bloodlines. 

Dave Bridger's Hen

Completing the top ten and in second section G is Dave Bridger of Littlehampton with a yearling on 959ypm over a distance of 237 miles. Dave timed a hen named Sahara due to the amount f sand in the rain later in the day. The grand-dam of Sahara is Topaz direct from Dave's national winning hen Heatwave that was 1st NFC Messac 2017. Heatwave was paired to Crammond and Langstaff's national winning cock Spartacus, 1st NFC Messac. On the sire's side the breeding contains Jim and Eileen Whitehead's War Admiral out of Syndicate Lofts War Drum.

Dave Bridger's loft
Mannor Loft's hen

M, C and J Norman (Mannor Lofts) of Southampton timed two pigeons to take second and third section A. Both were two year olds flying 253 miles on 921 and 855ypm respectively. First on the clock was a hen which on the sire's side is from their own family of Andy Parsons, Les Kidd and Guy Reed bloodlines. The dam was bought from Earling Dean and was bred by Roger Phillips of Guernsey. 

Mel & Sue King

Mel and Sue King of Blandford were first section B with a yearling on 877ypm over 256 miles. The section winner came from their Vandenabeele family of pigeons and was raced on their celibacy system. The sire is a grandson of their Shadow Daughter and the dam is also a grand-daughter of their Shadow Hen. 

Izabelle & Jasmin Wilson

D Wilson and Daughters of Yeovil timed two pigeons to take second and third section B. First was a two year old on 875ypm over 272 miles, next to time was a yearling on 795ypm and both pigeons contain the Witbuik Aarden bloodlines. First on the clock was a blue cock bred from a bird gifted to them by Ian and Lee Sullivan and the dam's lines come from House of Aarden's Witbuik Aarden and Padfield Invincible lines. Third section was a chequer hen gifted to them as a youngster by Paul Imeson of Wakefield. The sire is a Witbuik Aarden and the dam is a grand-daughter of Incredible Louella and Black Shadow. 

The Whitfield's cock

D and P Whitfield of Newcastle were first section E with a three year old on 639ypm over 402 miles. Dave and Paul's section winner is a chequer cock containing three quarters Jan Aarden bloodlines and a quarter Verheye. It has previously scored from Messac. 

Dean Jones hen

D Jones of Boston timed a two year old on 581ypm over 389 miles to take second section E. Dean's pigeon contains one hundred percent Padfield bloodlines being a grand-daughter of Padfield's Jack and Padfield's St Vincent. It was raced on the roundabout system.
