The cancellation of the first months of racing of 2020 was a major blow for Jos and Lars and for many sprint fanciers. After all, it has always been father and son Vercammen's ambition to try and claim victory from day one. This team of champions does not really need a run-in period. Impressively enough, they have really mastered the art of winning races right at the start of the season. Noyon or Limoges? They want to win every single time, and that is exactly what they do.
In order to perform at their best across all competitions and across the entire season, they rely on years of experience and on an impressive collection of talented pigeons. This collection was built around the iconic Elektro and his successful descendants, such as Samsung, Super Elektro, Elektro Jr. or Mustang. And Iron Man played a pivotal role in this success story in recent years as well, first as a top class racing bird and now as an invaluable breeder. The latest exponents of the highly versatile Vercammen pigeon family are La Donna and Sugar.
Hok Jos Vercammen has had some very strong seasons with the help of Mustang, BE14-6175237. He is particularly known for his national victory in Chateauroux in 2014 but he proved to be a great breeder as well. He is in fact the new superstar for Vercammen.
Mustang is the sire of:
Mustang is also grandfather of:
This is already an impressive list of achievements. Keep in mind this fantastic breeder still has several years ahead of him.
The latest sensation: La Donna
Racing hen La Donna BE18-6020283 has had a brilliant 2020 season. Lars and many of his colleagues were convinced she was well on her way to claiming this year's title of 1st National Ace Pigeon Allround, when they suddenly discovered that each province used slightly different criteria. "The KBDB argued that the first place of La Donna in Melun (310km) did not count because there had not been a 300km race in the province of Liège that weekend", Lars explains. "And in East Flanders the race from Vierzon (up to 450km) did count for the shorter middle distance, while races with a similar distance in Brabant and Antwerp were not accepted. And these differences between the provinces do show in the final results." We can only hope that they create a level playing field across all competitions in future seasons.
Despite La Donna missing this title by a hair, she can still be regarded as Belgium's best all-round racing bird last year, and she has a palmares to show for it.
La Donna won:
There was another racing hen that developed into a great star this season: Sugar, BE18-6020227 won a 2nd Nat. as well as an 18th National Limoges in just two weeks' time. Her sire is Lexus BE13-6026091, a half brother of none other than Elektro Junior and Samsung. The dam is "688", BE17-2149688, which is in turn a daughter of Black Magic (BE15-6071012), 1st Nat. Argenton 4,588 p. (from the Daans family).
This is another gem straight from the Vercammen lofts in Vremde that delivered a stunning performance both in Limoges I and limoges II. Let's have a look:
Sugar's best results:
Elektro Junior & Samsung
Lexus, the sire of Sugar, is a half brother of Elektro Jr. and Samsung. All three have the same dam: Delphine, BE11-6282004. The sire of Elektro Jr. and Samsung is Elektro himself. These have both been terrific racing birds and are now proving to be excellent breeders as well.
Elektro Jr. won a title of 5th National ace pigeon KBDB middle distance and 1st provincial ace pigeon KBDB Antwerp yearlings middle distance 2017. He clearly has some incredible breeding potential, judging from the excellent achievements of his youngsters.
Palmares Elektro Jr.
Samsung, BE15-6026082, a full brother of Elektro Jr., is proving to be almost just as talented. He had a great racing career before turning into a reputable breeder.
Samsung won o.a.:
Meanwhile, breeding pair Elektro x Delphine had bred a third top class breeder: Super Elektro. He is the sire of several successful racing birds, just like his two brothers Elektro Jr. and Samsung. Think for instance of Fanta (2nd Nat. Issoudun 11,465 p.), Las Vegas (3. Prov. Limoges 1,226 p.), BE18-6020208 (1st Prov. ace pigeon long distance Antwerp) or Andrea (3 x top 100 Nat. Zone).
Breeding cock Super Elektro is a great looking bird straight from the most important bloodlines of Hok Jos Vercammen. And that explains his exceptional breeding potential.
Fanciers that are somewhat familiar with the Jos Vercammen pigeon family have already heard of Iron Man BE17-6025089. This sensational racing bird really came to the fore in the middle distance in humid and tough conditions. His achievements were in fact so impressive that Jos and Lars decided to transfer him to the breeding loft, where he has been very promising.
Iron Man was still a racing bird when he bred a hen with ring number BE18-6020146. And she claimed the following prizes:
51. National Bourges of 10,401 p.
6. Melun 434 p. (behind 5 loft mates!)
This year, two of his youngsters claimed a top result almost right away: BE20-6166350 claimed a 1st Quievrain of 421 p. and BE20-6166100 won a 3rd Melun of 1,806 p.
And let's not forget that this team has also had a steady stream of references coming in. It turns out the Vercammen descendants are particularly successful in pigeon races in Poland and Taiwan. The team received the following two references right before we published this article.
Krzysztof Szkolny (Poland) sent Jos and Lars a message to say that he would provide further details about this year's season later on, but he did announce that he was 1st Nat. Champion Sprint in Poland, both with the young birds and yearlings. And his pigeon 'New Elektro' has won a title of 1st Nat. Ace Pigeon Sprint 2020.
Meanwhile, Robert Zgud (Poland) bred a successful racing bird from Inbred Mustang BE17-6025586, which is a son of Mustang that was paired to his own daughter. This racing bird, PL-0206-19-1665, won a first prize in the Krakus Supercup (625 km) while also finishing in 36th place in the Final race from Luckau (530km).
The pigeons of Hok Jos Vercammen are almost guaranteed to achieve great results every single season; they perform with the precision of a Swiss watch. Their pigeons are always ready to go, no matter the conditions or the distance that they have to cover. Jos and Lars are the battery that keeps the gears in motion, they make sure that their racing and breeding loft are running like clockwork. The unique Vercammen pigeon, built around such stars like Elektro, Mustang or Iron Man, is the centerpiece in this pigeon family that has been winning races in the past, today and presumably in the future as well!
