Gert Rondags (Grote-Spouwen, BE) is national youth champion KBDB for the second time

Gert had already won the title of national youth champion KBDB in 2013, and he has been able to win this title a second time in 2014, winning both the national youth championship KBDB and the national youth criterium KBDB.

The impressive number of top results and championship titles of Gert would make you think that he is an experienced fancier but that is not quite the case. The 20 year old Gert has been involved in the sport for only five years. His father Frans used to be in a highly successful combination with his grandfather Laurent, and Frans continued to keep pigeons on his own after grandfather Laurent’s passing in 2007. However, he got tired of having to go back and forth to his loft, which was 7km away from his home. Eventually, he sold his entire collection of pigeons on PIPA in 2008. Frans now had a lot of spare time and his son Gert suggested to start keeping pigeons in a loft at home. They agreed to start up a new pigeon loft in 2010, and they did great from day one, winning an impressive 19 first prizes in 2010, 29 first prizes in 2011 and 53 first prizes in 2012. No less than 63 first prizes were won in 2013, and 2014 was even better with 73 victories. This includes no doubles. Pigeon racing is a family business here: Gert gets a lot of help from his father in terms of daily caretaking, while his mother releases the young birds every day. His sister is sometimes called in as well to train the pigeons.

The pigeon breed

The pigeons in this loft originate for 95% from the breed of Paul Huls (Zonhoven, BE). Paul has always been good friends with the Rondags family, and he provides advice as well as great pigeons. The pigeons of Paul originate from the loft of Flor Vervoort, Maurice Voets and Gust Geentjes, which were combined with pigeon of the old breed of Gert’s grandfather Laurent. Another important introduction was a hen of Kamiel Vos. Gert races with a team of 35 cocks and 12 hens, while keeping about 24 breeding birds.

Some of his stars

We could not possibly discuss every successful pigeon of Gert Rondags, so we limited ourselves to the champions of 2014.

To conclude

Gert is a motivated young fancier with a solid approach who gets full support from his family and from Paul Huls, who provides advice and top class pigeons. We think these are the main requirements for him to become a top class fancier, which he already is at an early age.
