Poncelet Luc, "National Champion KBDB Sprint 2007"

Poncelet Luc, Limal

Luc's career as a pigeon fancier can at the very least be described as "STRANGE". Until the death of his father in 2004 he was only responsible for basketting and maintenance. He wasn't interested in the pigeons and only helped so that he could please his father, Alphonse, a REAL FANCIER so as we call them...

In 2004 Luc had to make a decision, get rid of everything or take the bull by the horns and take a risk in a domain with which he was not familiar.
Fours years later it is clear that our host made the right decision!!! The fact that he has reached such a high nouveau is all due to himself, his insight and perseverance have proved that he is a force to be reckoned with. It is an exceptional feat to win a national championship, but in March Luc told whoever wanted to hear that his only objective for 2007 was to become National Champion. ... Some would say that he was pretentious, not at all: our friend Luc is someone who needs to set himself hard goals, giving him the necessary adrenaline to motivate him for the whole season. Others call it luck ... gaining a place in the national sprint championships for 3 years in a row 3 isn't coincidence, it is more of a "feeling".

Luc doesn't take any notice his opponent's pettiness and the jealousy it brings. He is not the sort of fancier that doesn't do his best and can only talk about previous achievements, only NOW and the future matter. He is very demanding of himself, and of his pigeons; the only things that matter are results!!!

From the very beginning he has had the pedigrees from Vandebotermet from Beersel, Pierre Roger from Pecrot, Huart from Nijvel, (Debiève ) and Jonkers from Linter ( strain "Zabel" and "Cleef" ). Pigeons that have good papers don't impress Luc, they have to prove and moreover confirm themselves. The proof : In Profondsart there are no luxury lofts or breeders with pedigrees to dream about. Far from it, here is the reality, the racers are the only breeders. Only pigeons that have passed a tough selection are used for breeding. The breeding consists of 100 youngsters. If the master decides that there is room for more youngsters he visits the pigeon market in Lier to find a certain type of pigeon, from a modest background, but not too expensive, so that he doesn't have to hesitate to get rid of it if it doesn't come up to expectation!!! Because Luc is so attached to his pigeons he has been able to withstand all the offers to buy his pigeons and has not sold the birds that have given him so much honour. Necessity forces him to place a new loft for the breeders, a breeding loft that will consist of his best elements. Looking toward the future, Luc will follow the same lines and have a new objective for 2008 but without doubt one of these objectives will be National Sprint Champion. He also wants to prove to all the criticizers that his pigeons are not limited to a maximum of 200 km and that the middle distance is also within his reach. To achieve this there will be a team of yearlings tested in 2008 in the small middle distance races. In order to do this Luc keeps to his principle of buying pigeons from fanciers that have already proved themselves in the results, such as Van Renterghem-Deblicquy from Pipaix (Belgian Champion Middle Distance 2006) and Reynaerts Joseph from Attenhoven (2nd Belgian Champion Middle Distance 2006). Nobody doubts that these reinforcements, along with his own pigeons, will work miracles for Luc... For Luc, pigeon racing is a hobby and has to remain a hobby. This is proved by the fact that he uses a system that can be described in one word:

" Simplicity ". The 55 widowers and yearlings (old and yearlings about 50%) are paired at the beginning of December and raise two youngsters. Once the youngsters are two weeks old one of them is moved, along with it's mother, to a different loft and the cock stays with the other youngster until the time of separation. They are paired again around the middle of March and brood for 6 or 7 days, then the season begins. Two training races are enough, and depending on the weather, the full colony is raced from the third week of April until the 15th of August without a break. A visit to the vet prior to the second pairing is also on the agenda, and also when necessary, during the season. Luc uses brand name mixtures, according to the classic schema. During the season his protégés are regularly given a commercial tea to which thyme is added, good for the airways. After the racing season the racers stay together and enjoy total freedom until the end of October. Luc is especially alert during the moulting period. The pigeons are given a balanced moulting mixture with the necessary supplements such as garlic oil, brewers yeast, vitamins, tea ... Luc is a sprint fancier with the patience of a Long Distance fancier.

The youngsters are only trained and participate in 7 or 8 races from 80 to 200 km. The results are not taken into account, all the young cocks are allowed to remain and are only judged as yearlings, or if necessary, as 2 year-olds. It is not unusual to see 5 or 6 year-old pigeons fighting for a place of honour in the results.

He would especially like to thank his sister Jeannine who takes care of the youngsters. In spite of his success, Luc remains uncomplicated, he sees it as an honour to be able to have pigeon racing as a hobby and refuses to enter into a world where PROFIT takes preference to pleasure. He has certainly earned a place of honour in the pigeon world and the future looks very promising!!!! Via this report
