Marcel & Brian Sangers (Eefde, NL) gain renown after a fabulous season

The Sangers pigeons were phenomenal in 2018, much to the despair of their opponents. Marcel was able to create a tough to beat pigeon breed, based around his famous Super Breeder bloodline, combined with the best of Van Den Bulck and Lambrechts. It was the key to some sensational results.

Pigeon fanciers were left in amazement almost on a weekly basis, with the pigeons of Marcel and Brian Sangers delivering fantastic results in and around Zutphen both in 2017 and 2018, amid fierce competition. The pigeons stood out in 2018 in particular, even though this has been one of the most demanding seasons ever, with headwinds and high temperatures almost every week. Here is a brief summary:

1st not nominated champion Northern Union

One of the best moments of the 2018 season for Marcel was when his son Brian won the title of 1st semi national champion one day long distance not nominated in the Northern Union (provinces 7 to 11). "He is really enthousiastic, and everything seems to work out for him. We do most of the work together: I manage the loft, and Brian and Chantal are excellent assistants. Brian had a great season from day one, especially in the one day long distance!" He basketed 23 pigeons in total for three national one day long distance classics, and he ended up winning the title of 1st semi-national not nominated champion one day long distance. These were races against some of the best fanciers from The Netherlands, with more than 12,000 pigeons! Brian beat some of our country's leading names, and some of them race with very large teams. It was a fantastic feat! Here are Brian's first three pigeons in the nationals:

      3rd NPO Bourges 4,271 p.
      4th NPO Chateauroux 3,891 p.
      27th NPO Chateaudun 4,997 p.

The best pigeon of Brian is NL14-1662622 Andara, winner of:

      27th NPO Chateaudun 4,997 p. 572 km
      44th NPO Chateauroux 3,891 p. 678 km
      62nd NPO Bourges 2,642 p. 627 km
      128th NPO Pithiviers 6,699 p. 527 km
      2nd Niergnies 7,100 p. behind a loft mate
      5th Geel 6,739 p. behind 4 loft mates

Sire: Octavia, a half brother of Fast Red (1st-7th-7th-23rd NPO), Red Fox (1st Duffel 9,173 p.) and Alydar (a top breeder). He is a son of Fast As Lightning (1st Heverlee 9,076 p. and 5th and 8th NPO) paired to Anica (1st Boxtel 7,743 p. and 1st Geel 471 p.)

1st not nominated champion one day long distance prov. 8 (4 races)

And Marcel has been quite successful in the one day long distance as well, with some top results in the championship not nominated province 8 GOU (four best races). One of the pigeons that played a defining role was NL16-1259638 Homesick, from the successful combination of Van Den Bulck x Sangers. The sire is Bratt, a full brother of the legendary Kittel (1st Nat. Ace Pigeon KBDB sprint and a top breeder). The dam comes from Fast As Lightning, which was paired to Edani, 1st provincial ace pigeon one day long distance province 8 and a Europe Cup bird. Homesick earned his stripes in 2018 with the following prizes:
      12th NPO Gien 5,615 p. 559 km 2018
      30th NPO Pithiviers 6,699 p. 527 km 2018
      48th NPO Bourges 4,271 p. 627 km 2018

The fact that both Marcel and Brian won some prestigious championship titles in the one day long distance was a great plus for the team. "We are not quite as focused on the one day long distance as we used to", says Marcel. "We are now working hard to develop a pigeon breed with strength in numbers. That means basketing pigeons every single week, so we mainly compete in the sprint and middle distance these days. And with the harsh conditions of 2018, these races were in fact not all that different from a one day long distance flight." They have just a select group of birds racing in the one day long distance now, and the Van Den Bulck x Sangers combination appears to be particularly suited for this competition.

Marcel has had many memorable moments over the course of his fantastic career. What is it that keeps this champion motivated after so many years? "Those Saturdays when I'm awaiting my pigeons. You can feel the tension build up towards a great result. It feels great! We always keep an eye on the Eijerkamp website, knowing that we have to clock about five minutes after them for a solid result. I remember a few races this season where Chantal saw that Eijerkamp had just clocked a pigeon, right when our pigeons were also starting to come home. At that moment, you just know that your pigeons are minutes ahead of their opponents. It gives you such an adrenaline rush! In the 2018 middle distance competition we were ahead of them in 6 out of 7 races, so we did quite well this season", says Marcel. and that is a bit of an understatement.

"I do think there is healthy competition in our district. Team Eijerkamp was outstanding in the one day long distance and with the young birds in particular. And I really value this team, because I know that it takes a lot of work to get where they are. And the fierce competition pushes everyone to raise the bar even further." Marcel was very pleased with his ace pigeons this season: "We had 20 pigeons in the top 25 after six sprint races, which is quite special. Keep in mind we still had the middle distance and the long distance ahead of us, where we had some stellar results and championship titles respectively."

Here is a look at their truly fantastic 2018 palmares. A brief overview:

The best performing Van Den Bulck collection

This is definitely true for Team Sangers. The Super Kweker bloodline has been one of the cornerstones of their breeding and racing team since the 1990s. It was a solid foundation that gave way to such renowned birds as Tommy Gun (8 x first), Eagle eye (1st Nat. Ace Pigeon and 1st NPO), Nina (1st NPO Bourges) and several others. Later on, the introduction of Koopman pigeons in this breed, which were crossed with the existing bloodlines, marked the start of a highly successful period for this team! We are now several years down the line, and Marcel started to look for new introductions. Eventually, he settled for some fine birds of Dirk Van Den Bulck, which he obtained from the grandmaster himself and through Flanders Collection.

Marcel exchanged a number of pigeons with Flanders Collection, and he obtained youngsters and brothers & sisters of some of the very best Van Den Bulck pigeons. It was a considerable upgrade for this team, as you can tell from their results in recent years! Team Sangers now has the following Van Den Bulck birds in their collection:

5 youngsters of Kittel – 1st Nat. ace pigeon sprint KBDB and a super class breeder
3 youngsters of Goede Rode x Olympic Rosita – parents of Kittel
2 youngsters of Greipel – 6th Nat. ace pigeon KBDB & full brother Kittel
2 youngsters of New Kittel – Substitute Olympiad pigeon & brother Kittel
2 youngsters of Broer Goede Rode x Olympic Rosita – stock pair
2 youngsters of Broer Goede Rode x Golden Leo 999 – super class pair
2 youngsters of Broer Goede Rode x Golden Leo 40000 – super class pair

The Sangers breeding lofts are now home to over 35 Dirk Van Den Bulck breeders, and their most notable investment recently is probably BE18-4224986 Bansky. This pigeon is named after the artist with the famous painting that destroyed itself right after it was sold. It was a work of art that will be talked about for quite a while, and we reckon the blue coloured cock Bansky will not soon be forgotten either. They purchased this bird from the Flanders Collection through PIPA for quite a bit of money, and he is the only direct youngster of Kittel x his dam Olympic Rosita left in Europe! Brian Sangers: "This pigeon feels fantastic, and he is clearly the number one in in our collection of Van den Bulck breeders. Sangers Pigeons has great confidence in the future thanks to these pigeons!"

An impressive Lincia from the Stefaan Lambrechts breed

Besides the Van Den Bulck pigeons, Marcel was also quite fond of the pigeons of Stefaan Lambrechts, and his fantastic 1st national ace pigeon Lincia in particular. He obtained the following Lambrechts birds recently:

It is quite clear that Sangers Pigeons is all set for the future, with such an array of top quality breeding birds. But is pigeon racing ready for the future? Marcel: "I embrace the innovations in our sport. I do not agree with everything but I think the most important idea is that the same rules apply across the country. That is why I was pleased to hear that the national racing calendar will be used in all provinces. All fanciers now have the same options in terms of basketing clubs. Although I would like to see the points system revised. For instance, a sprint fancier racing in a club with mostly long distance players has a considerable advantage. Those long distance fanciers are no longer allowed to basket pigeons that are only there to gain experience, but it still happens that races are used merely as preparatory flights. These fanciers do not even clock their birds but they still have an impact on the coefficient. And if there is not much competition around, you a major step ahead of those fanciers racing in highly competitive districts, especially in the national ace pigeon championships and the national competitions. I hope steps will be taken in the future."

Marcel understands the commotion around a possible basketing limit. “I think this is more of an issue in Province 5 than it is here, but these things should be dealt with at a national level. Some fanciers do basket a ridiculous amount of birds sometimes. However, I should give a word of warning in case a basketing limit would be imposed: fewer prizes will be won at the lower end of the scale, and the big names will still be finishing on top, even with a basketing limit! I do hope that this limit would result in more prizes being won across the country, with fewer teams clocking pigeons one after another. I am really curious about the outcome. There will be fewer pigeons in competition, and the prizes will be won a bit quicker. What will be the impact? Only time can tell."
