The big surprise of the past two seasons in the national long distance races was Dirk Speybroeck - playing under the banner BDS / Speybroeck – racing with a team of cocks (old birds and yearlings) of the combination BDS. Two years ago Team BDS decided to concentrate exclusively on the long distance, with a focus on national long distance classics such as Limoges, Brive, Souillac, Tulle, Aurillac… and also Perigueux, which will be soon on the national calendar again. The incredible talent of their racing cocks was evident right away, already in 2019 and 2020 when they switched to the long distance.
For insiders in the pigeon sport this came as no surprise. The name Speybroeck (formerly as father Roger and son Dirk, later as BDS / Speybroeck) has belonged to the top in the provincial and national races of the longer middle distance for years. So, history proves that Dirk truly masters the skills of top pigeon racing. And it was clear that some of their successful birds in the longer middle distance were quite ready to excel also in the long distance races. So, they strengthened even more their existing racing team with new pigeon power, a move which turned out to be very effective and added immediate value in their breed. The results they achieved in 2019 and 2020 speak for themselves: a fantastic series of titles up to national level, national top prizes, and multiple Ace pigeons titles. Below a list of all the impressive results in 2 years of long distance racing:
1st Best YL of Belgium - over 3 Nat. Long Distance races 2019 (with Double Kaasboer)
3rd National champion Long Distance Yearlings KBDB 2020
2nd National Brive 4,238 YL 2020
3rd National Aurillac 3,004 YL 2020
5th Best YL of Belgium - over 3 Nat. Long Distance races 2019
5th + 11th Nat. Ace pigeon Long Distance & Extreme Long Distance KBDB 2019
24th + 27th Nat. Ace pigeon Long Distance YL KBDB 2020
And on a local level:
1st General Champion Long Distance 2020 - Long Distance club Eeklo
1st Champion Long Distance Yearlings 2020 - Long Distance club Eeklo
2nd Champion Long Distance Old Birds 2020 - Long Distance club Eeklo
Anyone who can present such superior results after only 2 years of focusing on the long distance (600-800 Km), may rightly be awarded the title of ‘national super fancier’.
3rd Nat. Champion KBDB Long Distance yearlings 2020
This national championship of the KBDB is played with the 1st and 2nd nominated pigeon, over 3 national long distance races for yearlings. And here are the BDS/Speybroeck results that brought them national 'bronze':
Limoges 9,756 p. 180 (BE19-3039073) 352 (BE19-3039078)
Aurillac 3,004 p. 3 (BE19-3039286) 241 (BE19-3039019)
Brive 4,238 p. 2 (BE19-3039049) 33 (BE19-3039036)
Bart De Clerck (BDS/De Clerck), also a member of the team, was victorious with his hens, winning 1st Prov. Limoges against 3,037 old pigeons - and Dirk, too, got also really close to a big success with his racing cocks. For 2 weeks in a row, he flirted with the first prize but won 2nd Provincial, and reached the national podium with a 2nd Nat. Brive and 3rd Nat. Aurillac. Proud of the achievement, but still a little disappointed, since he was so close. How much closer can you get to national victory?
Good pigeons come fast back to the loft
For the second year in a row, Dirk could rely on a quality team of yearlings, who classified themselves, almost week after week, at the forefront of the national long distance races. But let’s meet the team that won the national title of 3rd Nat. Champion Long Distance YL KBDB. What stands out is the leading role of the Monty bloodline (of Rudi De Saer), the successful bloodline that gave the phenomenal pigeon "Rainman" - winner of 1st Nat. We cannot possibly leave out of this overview one particular top-racer from the old pigeons’ team. This bird, (just like Double Kaasboer, the 'best yearling in Belgium in the long distance' over 3 national races in 2019), stems from the stunning Kaasboer line of Gaston Van de Wouwer (via the PEC) in crossing with Marc Pollin’s Morifer line, Olympiad pigeon in Dortmund.

All set for 2021
If an out of this world team of racers is yours, then you have every right to feel super positive about the future. And naturally, you long to match and even surpass what you have done in the previous season. The races that have come before the middle distance already suggest the very best:
24/4 Clermont (197 Km) 584 old birds:
2-8-9-18-19-23-31-36-49-53-57-61-71-85-89 ... (30/36)
17/4 Clermont 293 old birds:
8-11-15-19-20-28-33-40-52-53-54 ... (24/40)
So, let’s be straight about it: the top-quality team BDS/Speybroeck is on a level of their own. Super pigeons at the loft of a master fancier, who definitely knows how to run things best. All the ingredients are there to make out of 2021 a new top season.
Wait and see!
