A report on the British Barcelona Club race from Bordeaux on 28th July 2018

One hundred and thirty-four members entered eight hundred and thirty three pigeons into the British Barcelona Club race from Bordeaux. They were liberated at 07.15CEST into a light west south-westerly wind. The following is a report on the provisional result based on members' verifications.

A McIlquham of Enfield timed a yearling on 1360ypm to take first open and first section D.


Mark Bulled

Mark Bulled of Harlow was second open and first section J with a two year old hen on 1356ypm. Mark's timer was bred by Vic Shaw and contains Soontjen bloodlines. The sire is a son of Charlie Simmons' doubel national winner and the dam is a daughter of Mark's national winner, Eastbourne.


Gary Inkley

Gary Inkley of Hillingdon timed four pigeons to take third, sixth, tenth and eleventh open, second third, fourth and fifth section D. First on the clock was a yearling hen on 1321ypm. She was sent to the race sitting her first ever set of eggs, having been raced celibate earlier in the season. The sire is a son of Janus, the sire of Enigma, when paired to a duaghter of KO, Van Dommelens Narbonne national winner. The dam is a grand-daughter of Roger Vereeckes Tarbes national winner and Etiene De Vos' Carcassonne international winner.


David Coward-Talbot

David Coward-Talbot of Chelmsford was fourth open and second section J with a three year old on 1315ypm. David timed Miss Bond, one of his favourite hens. The sire of Miss Bond is a Vandenabeele cock that was a top breeder for Max Cooper and was a son of As Bliksem when paired to Blue Diamond. The dam of Miss Bond is Lu Lu Elizabeth, winner of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee one loft race in 2012.


Neil Jones

Neil Jones of Sandwich was fifth open and first section G with a three year old on 1314ypm. Neil's pigeon contains John Puddephatt bloodlines and it has been a reliable and consistent hen.


Simon Knowles

Seventh open and second section G was a two year old on 1304ypm for F Knowles and Son of Canterbury. Simon's cock was sent to the race sitting fourteen day eggs and it contains Jan Aarden bloodlines.


Don & Elaine Harvey

D Harvey of Dover took eighth and ninth open, third and fourth section G. First to time was a three year old on 1303ypm, the second a two year old on 1302ypm. First on the clock was a Ko Nipius x Jan Aarden cock bred from two Bert Shepherd pigeons, the sire being a grandson of Seven Up. Second to time was a chequer cock, the sire of which was bred by Heath Archibald, being a direct son of Pete's Dream.

Tony Leggatt

Tony Leggatt of Havant was first section A with a two year old on 1187ypm. Tony timed a cock bred from Calum Edmiston stock crossed into his own Southwell family.


Freddy Smith

Freddy Smith of Havant clocked a two year old on 1172ypm to take second section A. Freddy's chequer hen contains Southwell bloodlines.

L Cross of Gosport was third section A.


Kevin & Chris White

Mr and Mrs White of Weymouth were first section B with a yearling on 1110ypm. The partners timed a second pigeon to also take third section B. First on the clock was bred for the couple by Max Gollop of Lyme Regis and was one of sevenral youngsters he gave them in 2017. The bloodlines on the sire's side come from Patrick Brothers Barcelona lines, whilst the dam is a Norbet Sirens from Brian Hovell. 


Ray Dibben waiting for birds

Ray Dibben of Poole timed a three year old on 1099ypm to take second section B. Ray's pigeon is a Busschaert x Strawbridge strain raced on the widowhood system.


Nev Charlton's hen

Nev Charlton of Andover was first section C with a two year old on 1257ypm. Nev timed a grizzle hen bred from a Robert O Jones cock when paired to a grizzle hen from Peter and James Parker. This was Nev's final race so he went out in style.


Bruce Miller & Chris Coles

Bruce Miller of Wanstrow was second section C with a two year old on 1157ypm. Bruce clocked a Drapa pigeon that is a grandson of four olympiade pigeons, the sire being Champ x Cassandra and the dam Rocky - Van der Wour x 829 Roper.

Mr and Mrs Clive Merrills of Swindon were third section C.


Brian Hicks

Mr and Mrs B Hicks of Seaham were first section E with a three year old on 1202ypm. Flying 686 miles, this blue cock named Elsie's Boy was timed at 07.50CEST on the Sunday morning. Elsie's Boy was flown on the natural system.


Second section for Peter Whitelegg

P Whitelegg took the next three in section E, the first being a four year old on 747ypm. All three birds timed are descendents of Jimmy Shepherd's Southwell pigeons containing the lines of Mori, Rio, Boomerang, Lady Di and Mecca.


Alan Phillips

A Phillips of Guernsey was first section H with a two year old on 1036ypm. The sire of the section winner contains the best of Terry Marshall's bloodlines inbred to Brockamp's George, whilst the dam is an Andy Gregson De Weerdt.


Keith Duffin

K Duffin of St Helier was second section H with a two year old on 991ypm. Keith timed a pigeon bred from a Tom Roden of Cheshire Van Loon crossed with one of Keith's Jan Aardens.

Willie Healy of Jersey was third section H.

Dean Childs of Wickford was third section J.
