Flanders Fields Pigeon Classic 2015

On Saturday 25 July the second edition of the race from Compiègne took place in West Flanders, a race organised  by the WVOU Compiègne. This is a race in memory of the first World War in 1914-1918 and its war victims that died at the front 100 years ago, mainly in the Westhoek region.

A group of 16,457 young birds and 2,155 old birds were basketed, making for a total of 18,612 pigeons. There was a summer storm in Belgium on Saturday afternoon, which spread to the north of France. There was heavy rain, cloudy conditions and winds of 90 km/h. Skies started to clear in the west only in the afternoon, which is why the pigeons were only released at 13:35.
