Rutz & Sons (Blieskastel, DE): world class long distance fanciers

2016 has been another great season for the team of Rutz & Sons. The location of their loft does not really work to their advantage in the long distance classics but that did not stop them from achieving great results.

Most extreme long distance fanciers will be well familiar with the pigeon loft of Rutz & Sons; they are without doubt one of the strongest teams in the international long distance competition.

Rutz & Sons

Fanciers that visit the PIPA website on a regular basis have probably read a few articles about this pigeon loft already. We have published quite a number of articles about their impressive achievements over the years. The Rutz family lives in Blieskastel, a city in Bundesland Saarland, located about 25km to the east of Saarbrücken. The team consists of Karl-Heinz (66) and his two twin sons Sven and Jens, which are both 33 years old and married. They both live close to the house of their parents. Unfortunately their father can no longer run the pigeon lofts due to health problems. His pigeon collection is kept in a loft in his garden, and his two sons go there every morning to look after the pigeons before they head to work. There is not much time to get things done in the morning but luckily their mother Adelheid offers a helping hand as well. She does most of the caretaking in the morning.

The Rutz & Sons pigeon family consists of about 230 pigeons, with 70 pairs that are kept in total widowhood.

DV 0709-15-1344, 3rd international Agen Yearlings 2016

The spectacular race from Agen

We wrote about Rutz & Sons in early August, when their team of yearlings achieved a brilliant result in the race from Agen. We will briefly summarise the race for you. The yearlings were basketed for the race from Agen on 26th of June, to cover more than 750km. The 46 yearlings managed to win 32 prizes at national and international level, and the fastest pigeon finished in 3rd place international. These are the overall results at international level against 9,043 pigeons: 3rd, 14th, 29th, 30th, 40th, 43rd, 45th, 48th, 50th, 63rd, 64th, 148th, 157th and 175th, or a total of 14 pigeons that win an early prize. Additionally, 11 pigeons have managed to finish in the national top-64, which is an impressive achievement.

Interestingly, the winner of the 3rd international from Agen, racing cock 0709-15-1344, had also won an 8th interprovincial from Bourges earlier on. We wanted to know more about the origins of this pigeon, which apparently was bred from two one year olds. His sire, the 0709-14-146, is a son of Red Blade paired to Barcelona Princess 0709-06-943, and she won a 1st national and 2nd international Barcelona in 2003. The dam of the 15-1344 is the 06348-14-625, a hen that comes from the loft of Freialdenhofen & Sons. The dam of the 14-625 is Käthe, 06348-11-427, winner of a national first prize from Barcelona in 2013. She was paired to her own sire, Son Barcelona 06793-08-927.

Barcelona, the race of all races

The classic from Barcelona took place one week after Agen, and is still considered the race of all races in the extreme long distance. The pigeons are usually released on Friday but due to the bad weather conditions along the course the race was postponed to Saturday 1st of July. A group of 17,129 pigeons took off at 11:15 am, for what would prove to be a very difficult race. Not a single pigeon returned home on the day of the release. The international winner comes from the loft of Lother Lessmeister from Hütschenhausen, who clocked his winning hen at 6:26am after 981km. Rutz & Sons clocked their first two pigeons at 9:56'58" and 9:59'47", winning an 8th and 10th national prize against 1,278 pigeons in Germany. Additionally, they win 19 prizes with 33 pigeons, and their prize percentage at international level against 17,729 pigeons is nothing short of impressive: they win 25 prizes with 33 pigeons or a prize percentage of 75.75%. Only 8 pigeons have failed to win an international prize in a very demanding classic from Barcelona, in which only 25% of all basketed pigeons at international level have maanged to win a prize. This is quite sensational!

The pedigrees of the first pigeons of Rutz & Sons is definitely worth taking a look at. Their national 8th prize winner is 0709-14-131, and his sire is the NL 07-2008565 of Van Tuyl. His brother has won a 1st international Barcelona against 22,867 pigeons. His dam is the 0709-06-966, a half sister of a 1st international Pau 2006. She originates from two pigeons of Rutz, namely Rocco and Stella. These were both excellent breeding birds, having bred several prize winners.

Now let us take a closer look at the 2nd best pigeon from Barcelona, a hen with ring number 00709-13-930 that won a 10th national prize. Her sire is the 07-1885355, an original cock of Van Geel, and winner of a 1st provincial against 2,056 pigeons from Bergerac. The dam of the 930 is Little Miss, a full sister of a 1st national Barcelona 2008 and a half sister of the 2nd national Barcelona 2004. Need we say more? You can clearly see which bloodlines team Rutz & Sons likes to work with - nothing but the very best!
