A report on the British Barcelona Club young bird race from Fougères on 9th September 2018

Ninety-six members entered six hundred and eighteen pigeons into the final race of the season from Fougères for the British Barcelona Club. After a one day holdover due to poor weather, they were liberated at 08.45CEST into a light south-east wind. The following is a report on the provisional result based on members' verifications.


John & Theresa Galdwin

Gladwin and Jarvis of Leigh on Sea were first open and first section J on 1528ypm. John and Theresa clocked Theresa's Boy, a Formula One Lofts bred Frans Zwols pigeon with the sire being the Amal cock, bred by the Gladwins and raced by Micky Connolly and Son. Theresa's Boy was sent very keen on driving a hen.


Ken Pettitt & Michael Burden

K Pettitt of Stoke on Trent timed two pigeons to take second and third open, first and second section E. Both pigeons were on 1403ypm. Ken had nine birds on the clock within six minutes of his first arrival and all were from his old family of Vandenabeeles, bred down through Carrie and Jester.


Mark Gilbert

Mark Gilbert of Windsor clocked three pigeons together to take fourth, fifth and sixth open, first, second and third section D. The first two were on 1396ypm, whilst the third was on 1395ypm. First on the clock was a Jelle Jellema, the sire of which was a son of Rena, whilst the dam was a double grand-daughter of champion breeder Orion. Secdond to time was bred from a son of Kanibal when paired to a hen bred down from Starlight and Melissa.  


Terry Haley

Terry Haley of Watford was seventh open and fourth section D on 1387ypm. Terry timed a blue, white flight cock bred by A and S Hughes of Rochdale and containing mainly Janssen based bloodlines, being a grandson of Clean Slate.


Nick Atkin's pigeon

N Atkin of Talford was eighth open and third section E on 1383ypm. Nick clocked a youngster bred from his Frank Bristow stock pair containing the lines of both Frank's Kings Cup winners, Oscar and Kezie. It was sent sitting ten day eggs.


John & Ben Oakley's young bird

Ninth open and fourth section E went to J & B Oakley of Whitchurch on a velocity of 1382ypm. John and Ben timed a younsgter bred from a Gaby Vandenabeele cock gifted to them by Micky Locke of the Wirral, when paired to a Gaby hen purchased from Derrick Jones. This hen has bred a host of winners for the partners but it was the gifted cock's first nest.


Khan Bros

Completing the top ten and in first section G are the Khan Brothers from New Malden on 1370ypm. The Khans timed a young cock bred down from Ace Loft's L Ring Hen bloodlines.

Godfrey Kingswood-Cox

G Kingswood-Cox from Southampton was first section A on 1296ypm. Godfrey had eleven of his thirteen entries home and his section winner is Blue Thunder Bolt, the dam of which is a daughter of Volante which in turn is a grand-daughter of Blue Thunder, only bird on the day in the classic race from Pau.


The Norman's hen

M, C and J Norman of Southampton were second section A on 1245ypm. Martin, Clare and jack timed a hen on her third channel race of the season. The sire is Magic Mason, a Venner x De Carteret cock corssed into the Norman's own family of pigeons. The dam is a Venner bred by Dave Vowles.

C Lakeman of New Milton was third section A.


Julie Gower

Mr and Mrs Gower of Fordingbridge was first section B on 1314ypm. Mark and Julie timed a hen, bred in February and raced on the natural system. It was sent unpaired and was bred for the distance from stock from Andy Parsons.


James Fulford

J Fulford of Salisbury was second section B on 1008ypm. James timed a youngster bred from a blue cock given to him by Andy Parsons when paired to his outstanding Barker hen.

T Godlington of Milbourne St Andrew was third section B.


Sam Wilson & grandson Keiron

The section C winner was Wilson and Grandson from Marlborough on 1336ypm. Sam and Keiron timed a Mandelartz young bird bred from their team of yearlings that did well for them last season.


Martin Williams

Martin Williams of Hereford was section section C on 1289ypm. Martin timed a blue chequer, darkness cock bird, the sire of which is his fifteen year old Huybrect cock when paired to his first section winning ned with the National Flying Club containing Roodhooft x Huybrect bloodlines.

Pete Barlow of Cheltenham was third section C.


Mick & Lyn Chaplin

Mick and Lyn Chaplin from Woking were second section G with a youngster flown to the perch.


Trevor & Adrian Wilson

Trevor and Adrian Wilson of Bishops Stortford were second section J on 1528ypm. Father and Son clocked Drop Tail, a cock sent on a six day squeaker put under him the night before basketing. The sire is Mr Busschaert, whilst the dam is a grand-daughter of the partners' Koopman stock cock, Verius.

Mark Bulled of Harlow was third section J.
