Gerard and Bas Verkerk have delivered some truly unique results over the years, and we have seen some head-turning results from this team again in 2018. These results can be attributed to a whole group of national ace birds and olympiad pigeons that are in a league of their own. Bas is very particular about this, in that his most successful pigeons will never leave his loft; they are never sold. "Any super class racing bird has the potential to become your new stock breeder. You might have to wait until the second or third generation but you can rest assured that their race winning abilities will come to the surface one day. In other words, I need my best racing birds to breed future prize winners. This means I sometimes have to turn down a very generous offer but I often wonder if I had been just as successful over the years had I sold all of my best racing birds.” His approach enables youngsters to follow in the footsteps of their illustrious predecessors. It reminds us of some of the team’s most remarkable results from last year:
NPO La Souterraine 687 km 4,838 p.: 7 pigeons in the top 10 Duffel 107 km 8,371 p.: 1 t/m 10 etc. Asse Zellik 133 km 3,636 p.: 1-2-3 etc. Peronne 267 km 13,649 p.: 1 to 33 etc. (fastest in the release in Prov. 5)
And the racing team has had some spectacular results again this season, results that left an impression on many of their opponents. Here is a closer look at some of the best results of this year, while focusing on some of the pigeons that have contributed:
12 May Fontenay (467 km) 11,526 p.: 1-4-5-6-18-19-23-46-49-55-57-58-59-61-64-78-92-100- 101-102-103-etc. (107 /188 with 74x 1:10) 20 May Pontoise (378 km) 9,750 p.: 2-7-11-24-36-49-50-51-52-53-61-69-94-96-98-etc. (111/185 with 79x 1:10) Release Prov. 5 26,548 p.: 2-8-12-30-56-82-83-84-85-86-etc. 3 juni Pt.St. Maxence (340 km) 7,507 p.: 4-5-6-10-11-12-13-19-20-23-50-51-52-59-65-66-67-68- 74-etc. (114/164 with 88x 1:10) Release Prov. 5 21,069 p.: 5-6-7-13-14-16-17-25-28-33-76-77-78-88-98-99-100- 103-etc 10 juni Laon (280 km) 8,578 p.: 1-3-4-6-7-15-16-17-22-23-24-26-50-51-67-68-69-70-71- 76-78-82-etc. (90/141 with 63x 1:10) 16 juni Sezanne (378 km) 4,768 p.: 1-2-3-8-9-11-12-13-14-15-16-17-23-25-28-35-36-38-etc. (93/136 with 63x 1:10) NPO 13,628 p.: 1-2-3-9-10-12-13-14-15-16-17-18-25-27-32-40-41-43-57- 74-75-89-91-etc.
Gerard and Bas Verkerk were beaten by 8 pigeons from North Holland in Sector 2 (north and south Holland together), due to an upcoming southwesterly wind. Four of them came from Ton Snoek and Chiel de Wit, which all had at least 75% Verkerk origins. This adds to a total of 7 Verkerk related pigeons in the top 11, divided over three lofts. Gerard and Bas claimed a 9th, 10th and 11th and 15 national top 100 prizes in sector 2 of 19,701 pigeons.
As promised, here is a closer look at the pigeons that have played a fundamental role in this year’s top results:
NL17-1277355 Flying Wonder, 4x top 10 in a single month
This hen deserves to be called Flying Wonder. She claimed the following top results in just four weeks’ time:
26 May Peronne 8th 2,946 p. (and 10th fastest of 7,238 p.) 3 June Pont St. Maxence 5th 7,507 p. (and 6th in Prov. 5 of 21,069 p.) 10 June Laon Prov. 4th 8,578 p. 16 June Sezanne 1st 4,768 p. (and 1st NPO 13,628 p.)
Gerard and Bas won the first 33 prizes in last year’s race from Peronne against 13,649 pigeons, and Flying Wonder was one of them. She is a daughter of Bradley x Hot Shot. Bradley was a great racing bird but an even better breeder. He is the sire of Eternity, winner of 2 x 1st and 1 x 2nd Nat. Ace Pigeon Allround, as well as a title of 3rd Nat. Ace Pigeon Yearlings in 2015 (PIPA rankings). Bradley has also bred the fastest from Nanteuil of 31,438 p. and a 7th NPO Bourges 9,576 p. He is a son of Blue Champ (2 x 1st Nat. Ace Pigeon 2009 and a super class breeder) x Oprah, one of the team’s stock breeders.
The dam of Flying Wonder is Hot Shot, and she is a daughter of Bulldozer x Eye Catcher. The latter is a full sister of Olympic Solange and one of the big stars of this loft. She was the fastest in Mantes-la-Jolie of 20,506 p. as a one year old and she is now the dam of:
Eternity: 2nd Nat. Ace Pigeon Allround (PIPA ranking) 3rd Nat. Ace Pigeon Yearlings 2015 (PIPA ranking) Olympic Fire Eyes: Olympiad Pigeon Long Distance Brussels 2017 and 2nd Nat. Besides the 1st prize of Flying Wonder, Gerard and Bas had four more pigeons in the national top 10 in Sezanne, on a total of 13,628 pigeons:

NL17-1277470 Tess, 4x top 20 in five weeks’ time
Racing hen Tess is another talented newcomer in this team, having already won 4 great results in just over a month:
21 April Quievrain 4th 5,188 p. (and 10th fastest of 12,965 p.) 12 May Fontenay 18th 11,526 p. 20 May Pontoise 11eth 9,705 p. (and 12th fastest in Prov. 5 26,548 p.) 10 June Laon Prov. 5 7th 8,578 p.
This makes her a potential ace pigeon, bred from top pair Captain Hook x Wonder Woman. Captain Hook was an excellent racing bird and one of the team’s strongest breeders today. He is the sire of Tess, and of the following prize winners:
- Lizzie 2nd Nat. ace pigeon one day long distance WHZB/TBOTB 2015 2nd Nat. ace pigeon one day long distance Topwings 2015 2nd Nat. ace pigeon one day long distance NPO 2015 3rd best middle distance and long distance racing bird NL PIPA Ranking 2015 5th best one day long distance pigeon PIPA Ranking 2015 3rd NPO Vierzon - 11,506 p. 5th NPO Chateauroux - 5,907 p. / 9th Nat. 37,571 p. NL17-1277457 Olcay, 1st Laon (8,578 p.)
Racing hen Olcay claimed a 1st of 8,578 pigeons in Laon, and she showed her potential in Pont St. Maxence as well, winning a 12th (7,507 p.) and a 16th of 21,069 birds. Olcay is another good example of the breeding strategy of Gerard and Bas: "keep your best pigeons for yourself." Olcay is in fact a daughter of two Olympiad Pigeons, Olympic Fire Eyes x Olympic Valerie.

Achievements on a whole other level
We can think of many reports on team Verkerk that ended with the same conclusion: they perform on a whole other level. We are now a few years later, and it applies more than ever, mainly thanks to the incredible breeding potential of the Verkerk pigeons. Olympic Solange, Wonder Woman, Olympic Fire Eyes, Olympic Valerie, and Eye Catcher are just a few of the breeders that have played an important role in this success story, with the line of Olympic Solange being particularly valuable. Around 20 proven (racing or breeding) youngsters can now be found in this team. And we are confident that the team will continue to deliver in the years to come, thanks to the experience of Gerard and Bas.
