Marathon canon Piet de Vogel - Oude Tonge (NL) shone in very tough 2010 season

Building up a capital breeding colony became his life’s work– unequalled breeding talents resulting in National top prizes were the driving ambition.

Piet de Vogel from Oude Tonge was resplendent in both aims, with 2010 probably being the luminous example of the hegemony in his favourite marathon classics.

The often extreme conditions in the National and International overnight classics in 2010 were right up Piet de Vogel’s street. His super class colony – based mainly on the Jan Aarden sort – in 2010 the clappers won no less than 21 x de 1. prize in 7 different occasions.

A youthful racing team in widowhood, consisting of 60 pigeons, wherefrom 30 yearlings and in the ratio 40 cocks and 20 hens, showed what they were made of and made front racing a recurring question of honour .

 National basketting centre:        1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 6, 6, 7, 7, 8, 9,
                                   9, 10 etc.

Pau 10 entered National:         259 and 453 against 2657 pigeons
Bordeaux 10 yearlings Nat. ZLU:    13 (‘Bordeaux 240’), 65, 130, 514, 731,

Perpignan     10 entered  Nat. ZLU 448, 930, 998, 1036, 1115, 1158, 1287, 1348
                                   against 5409 p .

Further in the National Cahors (sector 2) 8 pigeons entered and 4 prizes earned: 153, 296, 318 and 1586 against 6397 pigeons.
Distances of  850 - 1160 km … and just like in 2006 when  Piet won 1. West-European Super Marathon, 2010 was a very tough season due to the weather conditions. Mostly tough races with head wind and heat! Only Perpignan was an easy race with wind from behind.

“I suspect that it says it all when my best results are booked in the tough morning liberations,” says Piet. “Liberations just after sunrise and flying all day with arrival late in the  evening or early next morning. I’m talking about the Nationals, with one National and one International … the afternoon liberations in the Netherlands are all sectorial – for me still a little bit less prestigious. I’m convinced that my pigeons come to the fore under tough circumstances thanks to a very well thought through breeding philosophy and a natural system of keeping pigeons through a very tough selection!”

The heart of Piet de Vogel’s breeding philosophy can be summarised as ‘an enormously strong marathon stock based on sublime winners with great potency for the future’. A look at the leaders of the breeding colony supports this line of thought .

Jonge Stayer
Beginning with the absolute stock father NL97-9703695 ‘Jonge Stayer’, a now fourteen year old cock wherefrom all the children will now be cherished as breeding jewels for the future. “You only have a cock like him once in a lifetime,” realises Piet. At home and abroad fanciers have been enormously successful with descendants of this whopper … not in the least Piet de Vogel himself. A few of the best descendants of ‘Jonge Stayer’ are :

- ‘The Pauman
1. Nat. Ace pigeon Fond Spiegel 2002 - 2006 and 1. Nat. Ace pigeon Fond Spiegel 2003 - 2007, 3. Nat. Ace pigeon Pau ZLU with a.o. 5. Nat. Pau 2005 against 3.571 pigeons, 42. From Barcelona 2010 the enormous breeding power of ‘Jonge Stayer’ was proved yet again. With a total of 7.016 National pigeons, four descendants nestled themselves in the top 30: 13. (a grandson, by VD Kerk), 16. (a son, by Piet de Vogel), 24. (great grandson, by Albers) and 28. (great grandson, by  Albers)

Monty Boy

A year older than ‘Jonge Stayer’ and having an illustrious racing and breeding history is NL96-2219233 ‘Monty Boy’ … a class pigeon in the air and a.o. winner of

‘Donkere Lazeroms’ x ‘Gouden Stamduivin 675’.
‘Monty Boy’ was a.o. grandfather of winners :

Breeding icons from the new generation
The super lines of the aforementioned stock bears are often provided with fresh blood through sensational purchases. A few of these are well on their way to growing into new stock holders – not surprising seeing their exceptional performances in ‘moments  of truth’. Three new leaders are :

- NL03-0326801 ‘Paarsborst

1. Nat. Dax 2006 against 3.257 pigeons and 2. Internat. Dax 2006 against 11.536 pigeons (in very tough edition)
1.   Nat. Lourdes time race 2005 (in bizarre circumstances)
33.  Nat. Pau 2005 against 3.077 pigeons
91.  Internat. Pau 2005 against 8.438 pigeons
208. Nat. Perpignan 2005 against 6.299 pigeons
535. Internat. Perpignan 2005 against 22.460 pigeons
As a yearling he was already crowned as 1. Ace pigeon extreme middle distance with 2x 1. prize .

‘Paarsborst’ descendants have already shined, so as a.o. by
C. Joose (1. Nat. Pau hens 2009, 2. Nat. 2.751 pigeons and 8. Internat. 7.608 pigeons)
Tom vd Kamp (10. Nat. Pau 2010 against 2.657 pigeons) and of course by Piet de Vogel self, where children have already won:
13. Nat. Bordeaux yearlings 2010 against 3.836 pigeons
2. basketting centre / 14. s.Nat Tarbes 2010 against 1.112 pigeons
3. basketting centre / 78. Nat. Bordeaux 2009 against 5.235 pigeons .

- NL05-1347080 ‘Super 80
shiner by  J. Groenendijk

1. NPO Mt. de Marsan (SII) against 4,144 pigeons (2009) with a lead of more than an hour
4. Nat. Bergerac (SII) against 7.471 pigeons (2008)
14. Nat. Bordeaux (SII) against 6.299 pigeons (2009)
Also winner 3x 1. prize in basketting centre 1622
Son of ‘Super 80’ has already won
1. basketting centre / 4. Nat. Bordeaux against 6,101 pigeons 2010
‘Super 80’ is nest brother of ‘The 81’, 1. Ace pigeon afternoon liberation in district and Nat. basketting centre and was bred from a Steketee cock x full sister of ‘Beer 307’, top class racer and 2. Nat. Ace pigeon ZLU  ZLU 2009

- NL07-3705121 ‘Escobar de Cas

 1. Internat. Barcelona pigeon 2009-2010
3.   Nat. Barcelona 2010 against 7.016 pigeons
17.  Internat. Barcelona 2010 against 26.878 pigeons
19.  Nat. Barcelona 2009 against 8.042 pigeons
46.  Internat. Barcelona 2009 against 27.669 pigeons
210. Nat. Perpignan 2009 against 6.507 pigeons

‘Escobar de Cas’ was bred by Cas vd Graaff, grew to be a top racer by Ko van Dommelen and was transferred to Piet de Vogel ‘International Marathon Aces’ for a great sum … he is a son of  ‘The Perpignan’, 4. Nat. Perpignan 2007 and 6. Nat. Bordeaux ZLU … on mother’s side he is also once again family of the ‘Paarsborst’.

A cartload of quality then, with which Piet has managed to win 16x the 1. prize in the very strong National basketting centre 1622 Middelharnis … a short summary of this :

 - St. Vincent 3x 1. prize    1997 - 2007 - 2010
- Marseille       3x 1. prize    1999 - 2009 - 2010
- Barcelona       2x 1. prize    2010 - 2002
- Bordeaux ZLU    2x 1. prize    2008 - 2010
- Mt.de Marsan    1x 1. prize    2004
- Dax ZLU         2x 1. prize    2002 - 2006
- Pau             1x 1. prize    2005
- Bergerac        1x 1. prize     1997

The St. Vincent winner of 2007 and the Bordeaux winner of 2008 are at the moment being offered for auction on PiPa. “Nicolaas and Thomas asked me to reserve something extra for this auction, in addition to youngsters out my best breeders … with the ‘Rode St. Vincent’ and ‘Bordeaux winner 2008’ I chose two standard-bearers, saturated with my best blood lines. Pigeons which can grow in other lofts to be absolute stock pigeons!”

One of Holland’s leading long distance lofts… that’s how you can certainly describe Piet de Vogel. If not for the fabulous performances of his own racing team, then for the impact that descendants from his breeding stable have by many other fanciers. The passionate man from South-Holland continues unabated in his passion for perfection, and to anchor the highly acclaimed Piet de Vogel long distance stock even deeper into the annals of the Dutch pigeon sport !

Hallo Piet
