Hugo Vlaeminck (Rupelmonde, BE) had another brilliant season, which earned him the title of 1st Nat. Champion Longer Middle Distance old birds KBDB 2016

Two weeks after Hugo was awarded as General Provinicial Champion KBB East Flanders 2016 he was called on stage on the national days of the KBDB, to be celebrated as the best fancier of Belgium in 2016 in the longer middle distance old birds.

Hugo Vlaeminck lives in Rupelmonde in East Flanders, the place of birth of famous cartographer Gerardus Mercator. Hugo Vlaeminck has put his town back on the map as:

Belgium's number one in the longer middle distance

Being the country's best fancier in the longer middle distance, it is something Hugo would only have dreamed of. He won this title with his yearlings in 2013 and he does it again in 2016, now with the old birds.

Hugo Vlaeminck is a one of a kind fancier. He used to dominate the sprint and shorter middle distance competition in the Waasland region for years, until the union (Central Middle Distance Union Waasland) decided to release the pigeons provincially instead of interprovincially. They basically wanted to break Hugo Vlaeminck's dominance; he was simply too strong for his opponents. Hugo was not amused, he knew what to do.
He decided to take a different course in 2012, focusing on the provincial and national races of the longer middle distance. It was a forced decision because he had no other options, although he had already been thinking about trying his luck in the national competition one day.

The pigeons of Hugo Vlaeminck had no trouble whatsoever to adapt to a new competition, and they managed to deliver great results in the provincial and national races of the longer middle distance from day one. Apparently his pigeons continued to dominate the competition but now at national level. Their palmares after five years in the longer middle distance says it all: no less than 12 provincial victories, 7 zonal victories, a national first prize and two titles of 1st National Champion KBDB.
These are the team's most notable achievements:

1st National Champion Longer Middle Distance Old Birds KBDB 2016
1st National Champion Longer Middle Distance Yearlings KBDB 2013
1st General Champion KBDB East Flanders 2016
1st National Chateauroux 20,163 YLs 2013

The team won the national championship longer middle distance KBDB in 2016 with the following top prizes:

10/6 Chateauroux Zone 6,692 p. 5 – 214
19/6 Montluçon Nat. 9,462 p. 206 – 107

24 cocks in widowhood, a proven concept

Trying to beat the many hens in the longer middle distance with a team of racing cocks seems all but impossible to most, but Hugo Vlaeminck shows that it can be done. He is probably one of just a few. He has impressed his fellow fanciers season after season with a very small team of 24 cocks in widowhood (olds and yearlings together), about 15 breeding pairs and just over 70 youngsters. Needless to say, this is a top quality group of excellent prize winners. These pigeons have a strong character, a will to win and a high degree of intelligence. This bred was founded on the high speed pigeons of Jos Soontjens, enhanced with some other introductions, to keep the pigeon family in great shape. The names of the different bloodlines can be found in the pedigrees.

Two pigeons that have played an important role are obviously Super Leo and Ronaldo. Super Leo BE06-6148021 was a direct Leo Heremans: he was a son of 2nd Nat. Ace Pigeon Ave Regina (sire) and a grandson of Olympiade (from his mother's side). This invaluable breeder has bred no less than seven first prize winners for Hugo Vlaeminck, including:

Nationaal BE12-4038406: winner of 1st Nat. Chateauroux 19,691 yearlings in 2013
Nestbroer Nationaal BE12-4038405: 7th Nat. Ace Pigeon Longer Middle Distance YL KBDB 2013, and co-winner of title of 1st Nat. Champion Longer Middle Distance YLs KBDB 2013

Another important pigeon in this breed is Ronaldo BE11-4049957 (son of top class breeding pair Favoriet BE03-4266564 x Legiestje BE07-4152001). This prize winner was a great racing bird but he has now developed into one of the key breeders in this loft. He won nine first prizes as a racing bird, including:

The bloodlines of the Hugo Vlaeminck pigeons clearly illustrate the breeding strategy here in Rupelmonde: breeding youngsters from great champions and ace pigeons, from pigeons with a proven record and the qualities needed to win races.

Hugo Vlaeminck has gained a reputation as the fancier who dominates races with a team of no more than 24 racing birds. This approach has enabled him to become Belgium's leading pigeon fancier in the longer middle distance. Congratulations Hugo and Winny.
