The grandmaster of pigeon racing in Belgium, Erik Limbourg (Brussegem, BE), has another great racing season with numerous national ace pigeon titles

Lucky 848, Joost, Blue Ace, Eagle Eye and Lucky 77 are pigeons with an excellent reputation. The descendants of Belgium's most famous pigeons have allowed Erik Limbourg to perform really well again this season. The name of Limbourg features in basically all the championships and competitions at zonal, provincial and national level.

Limoges II

Limoges II was the most important result of 2016 in terms of team performance. Erik had already claimed several second prizes at provincial level, and he'd had enough. Apparently his racing team felt the same way about those second places, and they put in a memorable performance on the 9th of July:

Limoges prov. 742 yearlings: 1-2-3-4-12-13-18-19-21-26-34-37-44-56-61-65-69-… (32/45)
              384 old birds: 1-4-62-… (5/8)

These are the national results:

Limoges nat. 6,946 yearlings: 43-44-68-69-226-230-303-304-329-406-508-541-… (26/45)
Limoges nat. 6,492 old birds: 47-123

Ace Pigeon Loft

'Ace Pigeon Loft' is the caption above Erik's website. It is not just a sales pitch but the honest truth based on a great palmares: Erik had the first ace pigeon in the provincial championships of Flemish Brabant in the long distance old birds and the extreme long distance yearlings. In addition, he also won the title of 1st Ace Pigeon Yearlings Allround. Erik finishing high up in each of the three categories is by no means a coincidence. No other discipline puts such a high demand on a pigeon as the long distance competition: you need pigeons with great speed and excellent endurance, as well as a high pain threshold in order to make it to the finish line. Erik's pigeons have the speed of a true sprint pigeon, as well as the ability to carry that speed all the way through to the final 100 or 200km of a race, which is when most of their opponents tend to slow down. The team had some excellent results at national level as well, with Erik winning a second national ace pigeon title in three consecutive seasons:

2014: 2nd Nat. Ace Pigeon KBDB Long Distance Yearlings
2015: 2dn Nat. Ace Pigeon KBDB Middle Distance Young Birds
2016: 2nd Nat. Ace Pigeon KBDB Long Distance Old Birds

Besides his title of 2nd National Ace Pigeon old birds Erik also won a 5th and 14th National Ace Pigeon long distance yearlings. Let's take a closer look at some of his champions.

Trikke (BE14-2151152), 1st Prov. Ace Pigeon Long Distance Old Birds 2016

2nd Nat. Ace Pigeon KBDB Long Distance Olds 2016
4th nat. zone Limoges 3,098 p.
36th nat. Montelimar 4,000 p.
25th nat. zone Cahors 3,328 p.
22nd prov. Blois 1,680 p.
44th nat. Brive 9,049 p.

Trikke won five of these six top results over the course of last season. The sire of Trikke is Blauwe Joost, which is not surprisingly a son of Joost (BE02-4051564), a renowned pigeon and winner of a 21st National St. Vincent and a 1st International Perpignan. The dam of Blauwe Joost is Blauwe Donna (BE95-4174293), a sister of Olympiade Bliksem. The dam of Blauwe Joost is a daughter of Blue Gaston (1st Nat. Ace Pigeon Germany Yearlings 2007) x 913/09 (a daughter of Lucky 848). Click here for the full pedigree of Trikke.

Number One (BE15-2015548)

5th Nat. Ace Pigeon KBDB
3rd nat. zone Brive 2,810 p.
9th nat. zone Limoges 3,380 p.
4th Souppes 2,281 p.
9th Souppes 2,418 p.
36th Souppes 3,069 p.

Number One originates from some highly renowned bloodlines; his pedigree features numerous talented racing birds both through his sire and his dam. We take a look at the achievements of some of the champions that he originates from:

Best Belgian Pigeon Allround 2007–2009 (Eagle Eye - grandfather)
5 x 1st prize
1st Nat. Ace Pigeon LCB
1st Ace Pigeon Brabant Union
4e Nat. Ace Pigeon KBDB Long Distance
10 x 1st prize (301/07 – grandmother)
1st Nat. Ace Pigeon KBDB Extreme Long Distance (Lucky ’85 – great-grandfather)
3rd nat. zone Souillac 2,304 p.
4th nat. Aurillac 6,611 p.
16 x 1st prize (Iron Lady 002/04 – great-grandmother)
2th Nat. Ace Pigeon KBDB Long Distance Yearlings (Magic 092 – dam)
3rd nat. Jarnac
8th nat. Tulle 5,731 p.
2nd Nat. Ace Pigeon KBDB Long Distance (Blue Ace 095-03 great-grandfather)
1st Prov. Ace Pigeon KBDB (2x)
Double provincial winner from Bourges (Het Bourgeske – great-grandmother)

Some fanciers would insist that a pedigree has no real value but we beg to differ. The chances of graduating in higher education is also higher for a son or daughter of a doctor and a lawyer, than for a student who was born in the Paris suburbs, although there will always be exceptions. The same principle applies in pigeon racing: not every pigeon that was born from talented racing birds is bound to become a national ace pigeon one day but he does have a higher likelihood for sure. Click here for the pedigree of Number One.

Late Jan (BE15-2015649)

Late Jan became 14th Nat. Ace Pigeon KBDB Long Distance 2016. The pedigree of Late Jan from his father's side is quite remarkable. His sire De Jan won a 1st Nat. Zone Argenton 2,903 p. and a 3rd National La Souterraine 1,933, and the sire of De Jan is Geschelpte 615/08, which was surprisingly an excellent sprint pigeon, and winner of 2 x 2nd, 1 x 3rd and 1 x 4th from Quiévrain (about 50km). His grandmother from his father's side is related to a sprint bloodline as well: the dam of Late Jan originates from the successful Blue Ace. Did you notice how many of Erik's top breeders have 'ace' in their name? Click here for Late Jan's full pedigree.

This is how Erik has managed to create a modern-day long distance pigeon: combining sprint birds with pigeons that can finish strong in longer distance races even in the most demanding conditions. But all pigeons have one common trait: they are proven winners. Among his most recent introductions is a cock that won 12 first prizes in the shorter middle distance, as well as a title of 1st Ace Pigeon Rhône Valley. Another introduction was a son of a 1st National Ace Pigeon KBDB x a 12th Nat. Ace Pigeon KBDB. These bloodlines have led to the following results:

Noyon (177 km): 303 p.: 1-4-13-18-20-27-28-31-33-34-37 (26/36)
