G. & S. Verkerk (Reeuwijk, NL) achieve another brilliant result in Quiévrain with a 1st and 2nd against 12,545 pigeons

Gerard and Bas Verkerk showed in the race from Quévrain that they are once again a force to be reckoned with this season. They achieved an impressive result in the sprint race.

Gerard en Bas Verkerk had a promising start to the 2016 season

The pigeons of Gerard & Bas Verkerk completed five races in the month of April, including a training flight from Meer. Apparently this is all the racing team needed to get in good shape, since they did really well over the past two weeks. For instance, the combination had ten pigeons in the top 25 in the race from Quiévrain (4,971 p.) last week. Last weekend there was another race from the same location in Province 5, and the pigeons of Verkerk really dominated the race.

5250 pigeons were basketed for Quiévrain in the entente of Gouwe Ijssel. They were released together with the pigeons of the Entente Drechtsteden and South Holland East, adding to a total of 12,545 pigeons that were released at 10:50 am. The fastest of them reached a velocity of 1254 m/min, and many pigeons from Reeuwijk followed in quick succession: almost 40 racing birds were automatically clocked in just five minutes’ time. These were the results (Entente Gouwe Ijssel):

30-04 Quiévrain 195 km 5,250 pigeons 1-2-5-6-7-8-10-11-12-13-14-15-16-17-19-22-23-24-26-27-29-

These are 81 prizes 1:10, with 29 prizes 1:100. The first two pigeons were also the fastest two overall in the release (12,545 pigeons).

NL14-1059608 Meghan was the fastest in the race from Quiévrain against 12,545 pigeons

The two year old hen NL14-1059608 Meghan was the fastest pigeon in the Verkerk team. She was particularly successful in 2015, with three prizes 1:1000 in the middle distance. It is no coincidence that both her sire NL03-1135475 Bulldozer (6th Best Cock WHZB 2004) and her dam NL11-1741026 Romy (4th National Ace Pigeon One Day Long Distance NPO) were two successful racing birds as well. Click here for the full pedigree of Meghan.

NL15-1706349 Sparkling, the second fastest pigeon from Quiévrain against 12,545 p.

A mere five seconds after Meghan was clocked, her loft mate and one year old hen NL15-1706349 Sparkling entered the loft as well. Her pedigree shows that she is related to Bulldozer as well; he is her grandfather. His partner was NL07-1817923 Olympic Solange, the exceptional breeding hen from Reeuwijck that showed her exceptional breeding value once again. Click here for the full pedigree of Sparkling.

The yearlings

The racing team of Gerard and Bas Verkerk consists for 80% of yearlings. These yearlings did eight training flights, and they only competed in the natour program in the province of South Holland as young birds. In other words they were basketed no more than six times, over a maximum distance of 265km. The team of one year olds for 2016 did two training flights before they were basketed for the first provincial race, with a release site from Meer. Bas noticed that his racing birds of 2016 were very motivated in the training flights but this might have something to with a bird of prey that has been attacking them regularly.

A promising start

Their top result from Quiévrain is a very promising start to the 2016 season, which is really getting underway in the month of May. At this time of year the pigeons are still being darkened, to make sure they do not reach peak fitness too soon. This makes last weekend’s results even more impressive. The early season traditionally reveals which will be the strongest teams for this year, and Gerard & Bas Verkerk have already shown to be very ambitious for 2016.
