Combination Reedijk-Jongekrijg, Puttershoek (NL)

Combination Reedijk - Jongekrijg,
Puttershoek the
Netherlands. (2007)

The combination I am visiting this time consists of Gerard Reedijk and his wife Elly Jongekrijg. This man and wife combination has raced under this name for a few years in more than champion style. The attentive readers amongst us know from earlier reports here on PiPa as well as in pigeon magazines that both Gerard and Elly can be too modest in comparison to the results they achieve, especially when we want to put them in the spotlight so as for this coverage. It is not noticeable. After various visits to the Reedijk house, an honest, open and very friendly bond has developed. We can describe it as a friendship both between the men and the women, because there is also a friendship with my wife, a friendship that we will cherish forever!!! Both Gerard and his Elly come from pigeon families. Dad Jongekrijg is no longer active in the pigeon world and this has led to Gerard being a "real" all round player. This Jongekrijg likes to see the pigeons returning from the sprint races and believe me, they return in a deserving manner.

Puttershoek
Puttershoek is a village on the Old Maas, on the Hoeksche Waard in the municipality Binnenmaas in the province Zuid-Holland. The village (the largest essence of the municipality) has a half urban character and up until the beginning of 2005 it had 6.300 inhabitants. Up until the 19th century Puttershoek was a small and rural village, where the main source of income was weaving. In 1912 a large sugar factory was built in the village, resulting in a characteristic sweet smell every autumn. The sugar factory brought with it workers from North Brabant. The strict reformed Puttershoek gained a blossoming catholic community who built one of the two catholic churches in the Hoeksche Waard. At the end of 2004 the sugar factory was closed. Next to a few cafés ("Het Veerhuis" is the best known) the village also has a large discotheque; "Alcazar". The most famous person from Puttershoek is Kees Verkerk, (there are now three !!!) who won gold in 1968 in the skating in the Olympic Games. His parent's café is still in the house where he was born, "Het Veerhuis", on the harbour.

From Roosendaal to ……..
So as mentioned in the opening of this report, we are by all round fanciers. We have to mention that Gerard prefers the marathon races. For the speed work they have 21 couples who are raced in total widowhood. For the heavier work they have, including the yearlings, more than 40 widowers and 13 nest couples. It is not really difficult to take part in all the races and go to the club with the pigeons every week, but to race at the level of this combination is a totally different story. Specialisation for a certain distance is strange to them. It might sound strange but the all round game is their speciality. To keep performing at the highest level and keeping up with the strongest from April to September is still this day a difficult task. Not only what you have to do, but especially what you have to give up. Personally I think that with the necessary input, a good and well thought through system and of course a lot of class pigeons you will go a long way. Don't forget that the pigeon sport a professional affair is and this duo doesn't have any helpers or carers. No, Gerard is the man who just takes the weight, say 95% of the work, on his shoulders. When we study the results they prove that Gerard has an exceptional skill capacity and definitely a formidable loft of pigeons.

The basis

The stock building of the pigeons in this Putterhoekse champions loft consists mainly of pigeons directly from the Gebr. Janssen from the Belgian Arendonk. For years they have dug deep into their pockets and during the last few years they have bought various pigeons from the Gebr Janssen.
They even bought three in 2006.
The strains such as; "DE AFGEKEURDE" , "BLAUW KWEEKDUIFJE 77", "MALIE van GEELOGER" etc. etc. sit or have sat here in the lofts.
There were also a few from Klaas en Rik van Dorp from Rotterdam - Overschie, Calon from Hoofdplaat and since 2004 and 2005 the quick rascals from father and son Verkerk which have definitely contributed to the hoped for successes.
The stock building of the Long Distance pigeons consists mainly of the pigeons directly from Jan Theelen from Buggenum who were got from the very old Theelen pedigree. (proven by the many red, slate and dark blue pigeons) Amongst others, the following strains "LATE MARSEILLE", "DE 510", "DE 099", "DE 508", "DIAMANTJE","DE LOURDES" etc. etc. They also visited the strongest loft from father and son Kouters. Someone that I definitely mustn't forget is the sympathetic couple from Limburg, Riet en Hubert Jongen from Kerkrade. They were crowned king in Kerkrade and now, a few years later, the first success from this contribution have been booked and they both agree that apart from the good pigeons and the useful tips, the friendship between them is still the most important thing.

Pigeon fanciers are astounded from Vierzon
At 07:15 the convoy containing 3.894 pigeons from District 5 South-Holland liberated from Vierzon. The combination self had entered 46 pigeons for the race. After studying the wind direction it was decided that the combination would have to clock at around two o'clock to have an early pigeon. It was just after ten-to-two when two pigeons returned side by side.
They were "Diddlina" and their well-known "Street Fighter".
For Diddlina it was her 16th prize this year, whilst it was the 14th for Street Fighter.
These must be really early pigeons. They had to wait until 13:59 for their third pigeon, but at 14:05 they had 13 home.
To come back to the winners, I can tell you that they were raced in total widowhood and were basketted every week. Looking at the total prizes won by this couple you will be lost for words.

We start with the lady "Diddlina":
Vierzon 1st 3.894 p.,
Blois 3rd 9.545 p.,
Haasdonk 3rd 947 p.,
Menen 2nd 554 p.,
Ablis 4th 4.256 p.,
Chantilly 4th 1.316 p.,
Argenton 4th 637 p.,
Tours 6th 1.048 p.,
Peronne 10th 4.101 p.,
Blois 10th 1.002 p.,
Duffel 18th 3.819 p.,
Strombeek 21st 3/663 p.,
Harchies 22nd 4.036 p.
Diddlina was the 4th Ace pigeon yearlings and 7th all round by TBOTB from the Netherlands last year. She was also in the strong district 1st Ace pigeon Middle Distance and provincially she was 2nd Ace pigeon Middle Distance.

But also "Street Fighter" knows what is expected of him.
1st Ablis 4.256 p.,
1st Creil 3.659 p.,
2nd Vierzon 3.894 p. (this after loft companion Diddlina with 1 second difference),
Orleans 4th 1.006 p.,
Tours 7th 1.048 p.,
Duffel 23rd 3.710 p. etc. etc.

Looking back at the total result of this N.P.O. race we see that this combination more than outshone the competition.
Vierzon N.P.O. competition, 3.894 pigeons. 46 entered, 35 prizes (1/4). 1, 2, 13, 17, 20, 41, 47, 52, 58, 62, 64, 81, 87, 93 etc. etc.

The class of the Reedijk - Jongekrijg pigeon As a Long Distance man I would firstly like to take a closer look at "Definition".
This powerful show-off won after his 34th National in 2005 from Mont de Marsan in 2006, before he was moved to the breeding loft, no less than the following quotations.
18th National Mont de Marsan
22nd National St. Vincent
96th National Bergerac.
Partly due to these performances he obtained the following titles:
1st Ace pigeon National Fond Spiegel
1st Ace pigeon more-day Long Distance Sector 2
2nd National Ace pigeon more-day Long Distance
In addition to all this, his sister also contributes to the victories. In the heavy season 2006 she flew the 52nd from Perpignan and the 79th from Pau. I was pleased that I could handle a national topper of the Dutch sky.

The care
Both in the summer months as in the winter the care is very exact. Gerard has 95% of the care. In the summer months the care begins at half past five in the morning and carries on until about 10 o'clock. the care begins again at three o'clock in the afternoon and Gerrie shuts the lofts at half past nine in the evening. The pigeons are trained separately for each race category.
This begins with the youngsters and is then continued with the old pigeons. Yes indeed, the pigeons train separately. Gerard says that this becomes evident by the basketting. The quicker youngsters are then fiercer and this is also the case with the training.
The care system is much the same as by many other lofts. According to Gerard it is the secret to success by all the champions, the good pigeons, in combination with the right food, training and guidance is the known key to success. Personally (J.H.), I am sometimes amazed when I watch the pigeons being basketted. If someone has a super result I think "how has he managed that". But sometimes I see it by the basketting. What a mess and I think it is a feat to get them in that state. Everything has to be in order, that is a fact. Gerard says that a lot has changed qua racing after they came into contact with Hubert en Riet Jongen.
Looking back at the conversations I had with Jongen and the conversation I am now having with Reedijk you can say that they are on the same level.

After a nice evening talking about the pigeons the evening came to an end. Looking at the monster results and knowing that they didn't take part in certain races I am curious as to how this Puttershoekse loft will end after a year with real pigeon weather and a bird flu free season. Gerard and Elly, thank you for your frankness and excellent hospitality. You deserve it !!!
