Benny Steveninck (Hamme, BE) had one of his best racing seasons ever in 2018

He claimed more than 26 first prizes, he won a 1st Zone B1 from Gueret, he claimed a 2-3-4-5-8 on a single day, and he even won the first 15 prizes in a single race. It goes to show that the Benny Steveninck pigeons were once again outstanding in 2018; they were at times impossible to beat!

Benny Steveninck and his wife Karin, reflecting on a fantastic 2018 season

A fantastic season with a zonal first prize from Gueret as the icing on the cake

A talented pigeon breed will traditionally stand out in demanding racing conditions. And 2018 proved to be a particularly difficult year; it will go down in history as one of the hardest racing seasons in history, especially the first half of the season, up until early August. We had headwinds almost on a weekly basis, as well as unusually high temperatures and sun-drenched conditions. This is the weather in which the Benny Steveninck pigeons could demonstrate their talents week after week. And judging from the list of achievements of 2018, one could conclude that Benny's old and one year old birds were simply racing in another league in the Waasland region; they were at times impossible to beat.

They were able to claim first prizes in quick succession, and they claimed the first two, fourth, fifth and even eighth prizes on a number of occasions as well. And believe it or not, they claimed the first 15 prizes in the club (with doubles) in the provincial race from Orleans in late July. Their opponents were simply being left behind; the results below this article tell the whole story.

Their overwhelming strength also resulted in numerous top prizes at national level, with most notably a 1st National Zone B1 Gueret of 1,478 old birds. This was unsurprisingly one of the most demanding races of the season, with an easterly to northeasterly wind and almost tropical temperatures. It was a race suited only for the strongest of racing birds.

Brother Pepchi: winner of a 1st Zone Gueret and 20th Nat Ace Pigeon Longer Middle Distance KBDB 2018

When you hear the name of Benny Steveninck, you inevitably think of his invaluable stock breeder Chipo. This is arguably one of the best breeding birds of his generation in the middle distance. This bloodline has given several generations of successful racing birds over the years. Chipo is the sire of Chihaut 98 (himself the grandfather of New Lucky 77), Crack, dam Pepchi, dam Sun, and many more.
The winner of a 1st Nat. Zone Gueret originates from this successful bloodline as well, being a full brother of Pepchi.

Talking about pigeons with Benny is always a treat. During our conversation we briefly touched on the topic of what would be the best pigeon in his loft in 2018, and he sighed. We reckon this is quite a difficult question for him, given the number of talented pigeons in his collection. He leaned back, and he thought about it for a while, before eventually settling with his team of racing hens. Brother Pepchi is perhaps the best of his racing cocks but it was Blauw 980 who stood out in the hens' team. She is a fantastic racing bird with an impressive palmares:

Ginny: two time winner and a promising young bird

To get an idea of how future-proof a pigeon breed is, you have to look at the achievements of its yearlings and young birds. Well, the breeding potential of the Steveninck birds is beyond comparison. The breeding value of the Chipo bloodlines will always shine through, whether it be for inbreeding or crossings with different bloodlines. They will continue to breed promising newcomers no matter what. You can tell from the pigeons that we just talked you through. The palmares of their young birds shows that this team has a bright future ahead, with most notably Ginny, the star of the young birds' team.

She was basketed for 3 young birds' races (not for Bourges, for which Benny had basketed just two young birds), and she won 2 first prizes in the club, besides a 12th and 17th national. This young racing hen has what it takes to win early prizes. This is not surprising; she is after all a ssiter of Chen (winner of a 2nd Nat. Argenton 18,390 p. - see picture). Here is a look at Ginny's list of achievements for 2018:

Lucky 14: the sire of Ginny, winner of a 1st club Chateauroux (2nd Prov. - 12th Nat.) and 1st club Argenton (5th Prov. - 17th Nat.)

Hungry for more after a fantastic 2018 season

Comparing different seasons can be quite difficult, especially because one and the same race can be taking place in dramatically different weather conditions. The secret is to have a pigeon breed that can handle any and all possible weather conditions. And that is what it takes to become a nationally renowned player.

It is no secret that And Benny Steveninck is one of those players. He was truly outstanding in the Waasland area in 2018, really standing apart from his opponents. This was in fact one of his best racing seasons ever, and he showed that hs indeed a nationally renowned fancier. He has a large group of invaluable racing birds capable of getting very high prize percentages. His reputation is not based around one or two top class birds but rather on a whole range of talented pigeons. These originate directly from the bloodlines of Chipo, Chihaut 98, Gueret, Sun, and Pepchi. These lines are an unlimited source apparently, and we think there is still a lot to come from this super class breed.
