What pigeons does the current pigeon breed of Bas and Gerard Verkerk consist of, and what does their palmares look like? Bas and Gerard would love to answer those two questions. Magic Amoré, Olympic Solange and the talented new breeders Eye-Catcher and Felina are all part of the Verkerk family tree, along with numerous other champions.
Gerard and Bas Verkerk can look back on another splendid season, and the highlights of 2016 are the title of 1st National Loft Champion one day long distance (nominated), 1st National Ace Pigeon Allround hens (and cocks) WHZB-TBOTB, as well as the title of 1st National Ace Pigeon One Day Long Distance fondspiegel.
On the eve of the Olympic Games Bas Verkerk tried to motivate his racing team for the final NPO one day long distance race of the season. And they were in great shape: four outstanding racing birds were clocked in a matter of seconds after a 750km race. They had an impressive 8 minute lead over the rest of the pack - a historic feat.
Team Verkerk had their mind set on the national race from Chateauroux, and so their pigeons were in top form for this race. They eventually won a 1st, 3rd, and 4th in Sector 2 against 14,602 pigeons, as well as a 2nd, 4th and 5th overall against 47,453 pigeons. This is yet another brilliant performance from the Verkerk pigeon family.
Gerard and Bas Verkerk showed in the race from Quévrain that they are once again a force to be reckoned with this season. They achieved an impressive result in the sprint race.
Gerard and Bas Verkerk have played a defining role in all national competitions across The Netherlands. The combination has now won several top prizes in the new PIPA rankings for The Netherlands as well.
The annual PIPA auction of Gerard and Bas Verkerk, in which they sell youngsters from their best breeders, takes place from 23 November to 6 December. This auction is definitely worth following, as the loft from Reeuwijk has been performing exceptionally well this season. Their new catalogue should give you an idea of their achievements and the pigeon breed that is at the basis of their success.
An impresive group of 37,571 pigeons from The Netherlands were released simultaneously, basketed by fanciers all across the country. The long awaited national one day long distance race from Châteauroux took place last weekend.
We assume the two perfectionists Gerard and Bas Verkerk (Reeuwijk, NL) do not have many goals left after 30 years of keeping pigeons at the highest level. Bas once told us that winning the first ten prizes in a Teletext race would be the ultimate feat; we assume he had an equally euphoric feeling after winning the first four prizes and having 9 pigeons in the top 15 in the NPO race from Vierzon.
The pigeons from South Holland were released from Nanteuil on the 17th of May, and Gerard & Bas Verkerk showed their potential by claiming victory and by winning an additional three top 10 prizes against 31,442 pigeons.
Gerard and Bas have had an impressive nine Olympiad Pigeons already, and this season they are the only fanciers to send three Olympiad Pigeons to Budapest in the sports category.
Gerard and Bas Verkerk have had another successful season, in which no less than three pigeons will be sent to the Olympiad. As always, they will close the season with the auctioning of a round of young birds from their very best breeders. The annual Verkerk auction starts on 29 December 2014 and closes on 11 January 2015.
It seems Gerard and Bas Verkerk have found some spare room in their trophy cabinet for yet another winner’s trophy, which adds to an already impressive palmares. Their amazing hen Valerie put in a great performance and she took the first prize NPO in the closing race of the old birds’ season 2014, a crowning achievement.
The team from Reeuwijk has won all three podium places in the middle distance teletext race from Meaux, as well as a 7th and 8th prize in the NPO race from Bourges and five teletext prizes in the NPO flight from Argenton last weekend, which add up to a total of ten teletext notations in 2014 alone.
Gerard and Bas Verkerk had the three fastest pigeons from Meaux in district 5 against almost 33,000 pigeons with seemingly little effort. The Verkerk pigeons appeared to be in great shape, particularly in last weekend’s weather conditions, in which they could really stand out from the others.
Ton Wolvers, Dick van Seggelen, Yong Lin, Jiabin Lin, Bas en Gerard Verkerk bundelen gedachtes voor iets unieks!
Over the years, we have seen some amazing achievements from father and son Verkerk. This partnership has won no less than 50 top 5 and top 10 finishes in the different Wie Heeft Ze Beter (WHZB) competitions since 2000.
The pigeons of Gerard & Bas Verkerk landed one after the other from the NPO One Day Long Distance from Ruffec (746), as if it were a sprint race. He had 19 pigeons in the top 35 of the NPO, which was (another) impressive performance. He also managed the unique feat of winning a third consecutive title of Provincial Ace Pigeon One Day Long Distance with his Ivory Lady.
We all know that Gerard and Bas Verkerk have been at a high level all season. They were particularly impressive in the one day long distance NPO races. The tough national classic from Châteauroux was a great opportunity to show what they are capable of and so they did: they won the first, sixth and 11th in sector II against 14,005 pigeons.
“Ik krijg de glimlach maar niet van mijn gezicht”, aldus Ina Rosendahl, eigenares van de snelste Nederlandse Châteauroux-vlieger van in totaal zo’n 50.000 duiven. Waar de Nederlandse kopstukken zich op de nationale Châteauroux zonder uitzondering aan het front meldden, gaf de 51-jarige Borculose in haar debuutjaar als zelfstandig duivenmelker iedereen het nakijken!
Gerard and Bas Verkerk are quite used to being one of the big favourites at the start of the NPO season. It seems they can cope with the pressure: father and son Verkerk achieved an amazing result in he first one day long distance race of 2013 with seven top 15 prizes in district five and twelve against 11,596 birds.
There is a lot to be said about Gerard and Bas Verkerk. Quite a lot of prizes have been won in the small space of their pigeon loft and they have had quite a lot of champions as well. They have moved to a larger loft now with room for more champions. The outstanding quality of their breed has resulted in an impressive 2012 season with a long list of top prizes.
When August appears on the calender we know the racing season’s end is upon us. The weather was just fine, with nice clear blue skies and back wind. The following fanciers achieved top performances:
In the last few weeks a strong south westerly wind influenced many results. The last one day middle distance race for old birds this season was a showdown where the really strong pigeons had to come forward. The racing team of Gerard and Bas Verkerk seized the opportunity to demonstrate their strength once more with a 4th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th NPO Argenton against 7,709 pigeons.
The pigeons of Gerard and Bas Verkerk appeared to be in very good shape and with a provincial win from Mantes-la-Jolie three weeks ago they confirmed themselves as one of the favourites for the national grand prix from Tours. The two year old hen Olivia was able to meet their high expectations and arrived home right on time.
The racing team of Gerard and Bas Verkerk seem to be on track this season… they already had three teletext notations, and this weekend their one-year-old yearling Eyecatcher was the fastest of 20,506 pigeons from South-Holland. This hen follows the footsteps of her legendary sister ‘Olympic Solange’.

Today was the grand finale of the Verreckt-Ariën auction, which proved to be the internet auction with the second highest proceedings ever. The auction which brought in most was that of H.P. & P. Brockamp, passing the 1 million barrier.
This is the picture of ‘Basje’ about 25 years ago (painted by his sister). Looking through his window at a pigeon returning home from a tough race. This is also the picture of when he decided to become a pigeon coach. And not just any old coach, but a real true champion.
Gerard and Sebastiaan Verkerk surprised the pigeon world by racing at the highest level again after moving house – proof of rare quality. All the National Ace birds and Olympiad giants are reserved for own breed and this success formula has made the supremacy of the Verkerks even more immune.
You have to know that with over 119,230 visitors to their site www.verkerkpigeons.com that there must be something special about this Dutch father and son team. Professional fanciers in the know, worldwide, have known this for some years now but the average fanciers throughout North America and other parts of the English speaking world would have little knowledge of this “dynamic duo”.
The old bird season has finished and everywhere, also in the strong province 5 where thre was extra excitement this year, the championships are being calculated. The well-known combination Gerard & Bas Verkerk raced for the first time from their new “Pigeon mansion”.
When the pigeons were first let out from their new loft on the 2nd of April, no-one could have guessed that 8 weeks later Gerard and Bas 8 would turn the 1st 1-day long distance race to their hand.
A few months ago we published the photos of the new “Pigeon Mansion" which was under full construction at the new address of Bas & Gerard Verkerk in Reeuwijk.
The transition of Gerard and Bas Verkerk to their new residence in Reeuwijk will have brought a huge wave of relief to many fanciers. “Momentarily not fighting against the almost unbeatable star formation...
Whoever follows the pigeon sport closely, can’t avoid it. The colony of Gerard & Bas Verkerk from the Dutch Alphen a/d Rijn were just ‘outstanding’ in 2007 and 2008. Nothing or no-one seemed to be able to come close to the Verkerk pigeons in the ‘Middle Distance’ and ‘Short Middle Distance’!
Over the last few weeks the impressive list of teletext publications from the family Verkerk was once again strongly replenished. No less than 6 publications in just over a week! With this, the total number of TT-publications in the Verkerk-career comes to no less than 64!
