All superlatives and other words are not enough to describe the 'dominance', say 'outclassing' pigeon game that the colony of Gerard & Bas Verkerk managed to put down on paper once again in 2008. Almost inhuman, when you quickly run through the performance list of 2008… maybe never to be equalled again. Though you never know with the Verkerks, as they have just proved this season. Their colony couldn’t be kept out of the 'latest news'. Phenomenal stunt performances in 2008 so as from Bourges NPO when they clocked no less than 14 pigeons within 34 seconds from a race of 585 Km… it’s almost not possible. Achieving something like this in the 'middle' of the race is performance enough, but when you do this at the 'front' of the race and all your 14 pigeons classify between place 4 and 19 against 8.545 competitors Nationally… it seems almost impossible, enough to ‘overheat’ all the speed cameras that the pigeons passed on their course towards home!

But… one swallow doesn’t make a spring, we hear the critics saying, who often have difficulty in expressing their sportsmanship and in valuing other people’s performances. Yet… 2 weeks later these same Verkerk pigeons once again gave these same people 'tit for tat' from Argenton NPO, where they achieved no less than the 13 FIRST PRIZES against 3.452 pigeons, and National NPO the FIRST 5 Prizes, and 13 pigeons classified before the 15° Prize against 6.595 pigeons! Performances worth a mention in the 'Guinness Book of Records'! High time then to pay a visit to the Verkerk family, and to find out what is hiding behind this exceptional range of top successes! When we approached the area of Alphen aan de Rijn and entered, everything seemed exceptionally calm, even 'deadly' calm… or was the competition still recovering from the 'uppercut' that Bas & Gerard Verkerk had delivered once again last weekend in the late race from St.Quentin (14-9) where they classified no less than 27 pigeons before the 29° Prize against 1.195 pigeons… only the places 2 + 16 were for the other competitors! Wallops that once again 'knocked them out' on the 'canvas'! One would be 'lost for words' for less…

Loft widowers

The big secret
Well people, I may have to disappoint you… but that 'big secret', doesn’t exist! Certainly not for people who look for it in all sorts of products or non-existent 'secret remedies'! Or maybe there is something… namely their breeding loft! This consists of 40 breeding couples who have partly been assigned to the garage and partly in the adjacent loft behind the garage! The amount of pigeons is not important here… but the amount of breeding material that is available! Almost half of the breeding loft consists of pigeons with a title of 'Top-10' Ace pigeon at National level after their name, including a few that have even achieved the title Olympiad pigeon! No less than 7 Olympiad pigeons have been booked over the years, and this will soon probably be increased to 9 pigeons! The most recent title was of course 1° National Ace pigeon WHZB 2007 with 'Sita', a title on which they will once more make a claim in 2008 with their super hen 'Solange'! Now, speaking of secrets in the pigeon sport… it is no different in the Verkerk Household than anywhere else: when the hen has deposited her eggs in the nest box, the decision has been made… nothing can be changed. When there is a 'super' hiding in that egg, then one has to nourish such pieces, and give them the necessary training and coaching so that he can grow into a 'crack pigeon', but…. When an 'ass' or a 'ninny' is sitting in the egg, it will also hatch, and… you can never make an 'ass' into a 'racing horse', even when your name is Bas Verkerk! Unfortunately this is the case by too many of our sport friends… lack of class, especially by the older birds (read: breeding pigeons)… only they often daren’t or won’t face it! Whoever wants to find 'apples' under a 'pear tree' will indeed have to search long and far! It may sound 'blunt', but it is the only true reality! In this area it is completely the opposite by Bas & Gerard because they own an abundance of class and quality in their breeding loft (see above), as a result of which their chances of having a 'crack' in that egg increases in considerable degree because of… the 'apple never falling far from the tree'! and we think that this is their 'big secret'… well, secret? Call it a SURPLUS in opposition to their fellow fanciers! A fact that didn’t happen by itself, but is the result of 15 years 'hard labour'! A result of 'a lot of breeding', a lot of 'racing' and racing everything, and at the end of the journey a 'very tough selection'!
Up until now an 'Ace pigeon' has never been sold…
the often 'astronomical amounts' that have been offered, were kindly dismissed! Bas & Gerard could resist these temptations, and kept their 'Ace pigeons' for themselves, as basis for the further development of their colony, as basis for their own future! A conscious choice that has served them well! Let’s take a look at the list of 'illustrious crack pigeons' and phenomenal 'Ace pigeons', who lie at the basis of the 'overwhelming performances' of the Verkerk colony anon 2008!

Straight away she is the 'new pearl' in the Verkerk household. Admit it good people, the Verkerk colony bathes in an ‘opulence’ of top class pigeons in the racing and breeding lofts! Almost impossible to equal, let alone beat! That SURPLUS of class which shows itself to the full in the weekly races! These are pigeons with which you can shift borders!

The current 'breeding wonders' out the rich breeding stables!
So as we cited above, the sensational performances can largely be assigned to that SURPLUS of class that the modern Verkerk-pigeon possesses. Not only the racing capacities play a leading role here, but also the 'gift' of passing on these racing capacities… call it for our part a combination of sprint, cleverness and endurance… onto the offspring. The pigeon that possess this 'dominant gene', and at the moment demand the leading role in the breeding loft are:

- Oprah NL04-2050252, a daughter out 'Magnum 340/98' x 'Amorina 236/99'. Her wins include 1° Peronne 2.127 p, 1° Harchies 5.948 p, 4° Le Mans 7.464 p, 4° Chantilly 3.794 p, 4° Peronne 1.811 p… not just any old pigeon! This 'Oprah' is, amongst other things, mother of toppers such as: 'Miss Twinkle', 'Sienna', 'Sven', 'Sieka', 'Kate' , 'Baltimore Bullit' etc… all pigeons that you can find in the 'Top-20' of the results of 'National NPO' aces in 2008 (see below).

"Kate" NL 07-1817968

- Magic Amoré, was bought from C.&G.Koopman as daughter of top hen Amoré 2 years ago! She didn’t leave any room for doubt regarding her breeding talents in the breeding lofts of Verkerk! She soon became mother of toppers so as 'Solange', 'Liz', 'Italo', 'Houdini' etc… These pigeons can also been found at least once in the 'Top-20' at national level NPO in 2008 (see below)!

Magic Amoré NL 06-4720774

Houdini NL 07-1817922

- Olympic Survivor NL00-1975952, brilliant breeding cock out 'the Jackpot 113/93 x Miss Saigon 000/95! In order to breed 'well' they have to be 2 years old, it is sometimes said. Well, an ideal partner for this 2 superior breeding mothers turned out to be the 'Olympic Survivor' who is father of the current toppers such as 'Solange', 'Sven', Houdini' etc… Let one thing be clear: 'racing well' automatically means… 'breeding well'! The performance level of a colony rises or falls with the breeding, and admit it, at that level the Verkerk Household is 'sitting pretty', with an opulence of 'super pigeons' in the breeding lofts as described above!

The 2 Olympiad pigeons Dortmund 2009
Pigeons that can show off with a title of 'Olympiad pigeon', have managed to achieve a series of top performances during the last 2 sport seasons. In the colony of Gerard & Bas Verkerk 7 pigeons managed to achieve 'Olympiad pigeon', a number that will probably rise to 9 through their two absolute toppers this season, namely 'Solange' and 'Stradivarius'. Let’s take a closer look at their performance list:

- Olympic Solange NL07-1817923 flew the following:
In 2007:
Strombeek 321 p. 1
Chantilly 5.645 p. 20
In 2008:
12/4 Strombeek 761 p. 5
26/4 Pommeroeul 6.401 p. 37
03/5 Peronne 2.543 p. 3
10/5 Creil 2.197 p. 3
18/5 Menen 4.132 p. 15
24/5 Vierzon 11.608 p. 51
31/5 Creil 3761 p. 3
28/6 Epernay 9.073 p. 26
06/7 Bourges 8.548 p. 10
20/7 Argenton 6.595 p. 1
23/8 Strombeek 5.328 p. 12
'Olympiad pigeon Dortmund'
With this she became 1st National Ace pigeon All Round WHZB May 2008
Top candidate for the title of '1° Nat Ace pigeon WHZB 2008'

- Olympic Stradivarius NL06-2162368 performed as follows over the last 2 years:
In 2007:
05/5 Peronne 6.637 p. 16
19/5 Ablis 20.007 p. 18
14/7 Mariembourg 12.909 p. 112
25/8 Duffel 2.114 p. 3
08/9 Peronne 4.876 p. 1
15/9 Chantilly 3.185 p. 9
In 2008:

18/5 Menen 4.132 p. 14
08/6 Chateauroux 1.264 p. 8
21/6 Blois 43.064 p. 46
06/7 Bourges 4.423 p. 2
20/7 Argenton 6.595 p. 9
23/8 Strombeek 5.328 p. 4
In addition to candidate Olympiad pigeon Dortmund, 'Stradivarius' is '1° Nat Ace pigeon Long Distance 1-day Fondspiegel 2008'!

Care
Does it need any more explanation?

The racing system has been fully covered in multiple interviews. Every year 150 youngsters are ringed and in the racing lofts of the old birds there are 44 brooding boxes, in addition to 2 reserve couples for supplementing any losses. When you own such an accommodation whereby all the racing pigeons are under one roof (with 5 smaller departments), then you would think that these pigeons are housed ‘thickly’, at first glimpse maybe ‘too thickly’! Against all pigeon logic! Because there isn’t any automatic ventilation… yet when you look at the performances over the years, and the recent ‘stunt work’ from 2008, it doesn’t seem to have presented any problems for the pigeons, quite the opposite! Admittedly, the resting loft of the racing hens is completely open at the front, and looks more like an open aviary, with plenty of fresh air and oxygen. There are slides in the ceiling which allow control of the ‘light flow’, and curtains at the front are used when necessary for darkening and to keep out the cold when it is 'humid weather'.
What is noticeable is the 'peace' that prevails by the hens. When we visited they were already in widowhood for 8 months (!), and not one hen showed any signs of wanting to pair with another hen, despite being 'free' in the loft for the whole day, or use being made of reels or wire windows or other artifices on the floor to prevent them pairing with each other.
Quite the contrary, they lie next to each other in their respective boxes, ‘resting’ or ‘sleeping’ as it were, just waiting to see what will happen! The cocks reside in the locked garden loft, which all the pigeons enter when they return home from the races… also the hens…. although after their training during the week the hens land on the ground and walk into their resting loft. When in the circus they speak of 'lion tamers', well… then we can say here that Bas Verkerk is a pure 'pigeon tamer' who is in control of his pigeons and lets them perfectly perform what is asked of them! Bas doesn’t really have a steadfast care system. Something is altered in the preparation every year.
For the 2008 season the old pigeons were coupled at the beginning of December; raised 2 youngsters (to a large degree those of the breeding pigeons that were placed under them), and once the youngsters were 18 days old, the hen was moved to the aviary. The pigeons were not coupled again before the start of the season. For the last race on the 1st of September '08 the pigeons were then in widowhood for nearly 8 months. Both the old and the youngsters are darkened (14 hours per day)… the youngsters until the 21st of June... the old pigeons in 2008 until the end of May (for the last 6 years there were a lot a variations with the old pigeons qua hours and time span).
From the end of July these are lightened from 5am-10pm. During the season they train 2 x per day from home. In the morning it is for 50 minutes, but in the evening it can often increase to one and a half hours continuous! Unbelievable! The total training consists of 2 ½ hours training per day! Bas doesn’t normally give the pigeons extra trainings races or take them away for training during the week. The only exception to the rule, when the race during the weekend was difficult because of bad weather conditions, then 'possibly' (with the emphasis on 'possibly’) Bas will enter his pigeons for an extra trainings race (from 35-tal Km) with good weather, a question of giving the pigeons 'new' confidence! But this is not a fast rule, more and 'exception'! In 2008 there was no driving involved at all! Only in the 'late races' are the pigeons taken a distance away twice (from the 5 races), even this is more as training for the youngsters to teach them the 'game’ (natural race).
The pigeons then race 'total widowhood' for the entire year. The pigeons are not shown before basketing and when they return home they usually stay together for 4 hours, with the exception that they are allowed to stay together until the following morning when they return home late. The pigeons race alternately every two weeks a Middle Distance race and a shorter Middle Distance race. When they return home they are given sport mixture supplemented with nibbling seeds, peanuts and P40 granules.
Then Zoontjes + depurative are added to the sport mixture for a few days. According to the task which follows the sport mixture is increased (which is a mix of 4 trademarks) + extra nibbling seeds, tovo, peanuts and P40. Bas also tried to play to the 'new rage' by giving cheese, sheep fat, animal proteins etc… but soon stopped with it all. Why? Because it apparently didn’t fit in with his system, and gave absolutely no added value! For 1 or 2 days Forte Vita is added to the water for the intestines (it also seems to help prevent tricho), and the pigeons are treated 2x per year with a delouse product from Travipharma. During the season a vitamin is sporadically given during the moulting period along with extra brewer’s yeast!

And medically?
The medical matters are in the hands of Dr. De Weerd and his products are used when advised. Tricho capsules from Dr.Vincent Schroeder are also used. Normally something is given every 4 weeks for 'tricho' (with different products). In October they are given a 10-day cure against paratyphus. And of course there is the annual paramyxo-vaccination and they are also vaccinated against small pox! At first glance nothing spectacular!

Conclusion
The big difference between 'toppers' of the calibre 'Gerard & Bas Verkerk' and the large competition rests according to us on 2 main points. Firstly the difference in the 'class of the pigeons’! The second main point is without doubt the 'feeling' of the 'man at the wheel', who not only intervenes at the right moments when necessary, but who feels perfectly what the pigeons need to achieve top performances, and acts accordingly! Feel free to call it having the 'pigeon fancying' in the 'fingers'! And Bas Verkerk… he has it, there’s no doubt about it! Together with father Gerard, he has kneaded the modern Verkerk-pigeon into what it is today: one of the best Middle Distance pigeons, maybe the 'best', that is flying round our globe at the moment! 2008 has emphasised that enough, you could say the Verkerk family have towered above the rest… 'pigeon sport' at the 'lonely top', pigeon sport from 'another planet'!

The spectacular 2008-2009 season:
Gerard & Bas Verkerk qualify for the following series of (inter) national titles (most titles will only be made official at the beginning of 2009), that is no 'small beer':
