These included “Okidoki” (2nd National Ace pigeon Grand Middle Distance NPO/WHZB ’08), “Het Belgisch Meisje” (8x 1:100), “Nightrider” (2nd International Ace pigeon Marathon WENC 2008), “Elassar” (2nd NPO/National Ruffrec), “Spikkeltje” (1st Champion Grand Middle Distance district 2008) and other various good pigeons which would no longer be raced in 2009.
Definitely a step back for the racing team, and that was felt at the beginning of the season, the prize percentages were good, but the real ‘top’ wasn’t there… although Arie had taken this into account, after all you don’t breed such super pigeons every year. But putting your super pigeons in the breeding loft is also investing in the future. It is the choice that you have to make now and again as fancier, although it is often not simple to make this decision at the right moment!
When we now rewind the film of the 2009 season and we see what Arie Dijkstra has managed to achieve in 2009, then we have to conclude that the racing loft has remained at the same level. If you take a look at the championship titles in 2009 then you can’t do anything but conclude that Arie Dijkstra has once again had a ‘super year’. The investment in the breeding loft is now fully paying off because although Arie is no real specialist with the youngsters, they performed extremely well. And, very important… there were hardly any losses, and the health of the team of youngsters remained optimal. See here the list of championships from 2009 which are known at the moment:

One of his toughest ‘opponents’ in the long distance this year was his own father Enne Dijkstra, who lives 300 metres away. We can safely say this is the only branch of Arie Dijkstra, because all his pigeons come from Arie. This year Enne won the following Championships in the Frisian Long distance Club:
1st Ace pigeon Old birds with the NL07-4286023 (“Boogie”, grandson “De Big Boom” x “Evita” and “De Lichte Morlincourt”)
1st Ace pigeon 1-day Long distance with the NL07-4286023 (“Boogie”)
1st Nominated 1-day Long distance (district east)
4th Not nominated 1-day Long distance (district east)
7th Keizer General
5th General Not nominated
7th General Nominated
A solid basis has been built on for years. This goes back to the years 70 , 80 and 90. At the time father and son did it all together.
For the majority we can speak of the strain Arie Dijkstra. To give an impression of the stock building there follows a short overview of the stock couples and their direct descendants that caused furore in the competitions and drove the Arie Dijkstra colony to the highest rung of the success ladder.
Stock couple “Big Boom” x “Evita”
“De Big Boom” is a son of the stock mother “De Strik”. She is from the old strain of Jacques Tournier. The father of “Evita” is also from the same blood line of “De Strik”. Cross bred with these old Tournier lines they are pigeons with as basis DeSmet-Mathijs and the Gebr. Janssen. This breeding couple in a thousand ensured a whole chain of descendants which either as racing pigeon or as breeding pigeon gave the Arie Dijkstra colony a firm shove in the back towards ‘National top’! One of their best known sons is without doubt the extra breeding pigeon ‘Leonardo’:

Stock cock “De Lichte Morlincourt”
The parents of “De Lichte Morlincourt” are nephew and niece. So is his father “De Late van Strik” a full brother of “De Big Boom”. They are two sons of stock mother “De Strik”. The mother of “De Lichte Morlincourt” is a daughter of “Het Grijs Orléanske”. She is a full sister of stock mother “De Strik”. “Het Grijs Orléanske” won the 1st provincial as a youngster in a very tough Orléans (30 degrees with a head wind and 663 km). She was the only pigeon that achieved a velocity of more than 1000 m/m. “De Lichte Morlincourt“ was only raced as a youngster because there was then the move to Oudwoude. He is indeed a super breeder, because he has bred 1st prize winners with four different hens.
The children and grandchildren of “De Lichte Morlincourt” demanded a large share of the successes achieved this last season. Their wins include the 2nd NPO Ablis 9.296 p., 2nd NPO Orléans 6.469 p., 3rd Nat. Morlincourt 7.053 p., 6th NPO Chantilly 13.247 p., 9th NPO Blois 5.237 p., 9th NPO St.Ghislain 17.210 p., 10th NPO St. Quentin 13.165 p., 10th NPO La Ferté Surjouarre 13.350 p., 11th Prov. A daughter of the “Lichte Morlincourt“ that plays a leading part here is without doubt the top hen “Tinkelbel“ , which didn’t only turn out to be a superior racing pigeon, but also a ‚white blackbird‘ where the breeding was concerned. That has been proved in her racing and breeding performances in the lofts of Arie Dijkstra:

Crossing material with the couple “Jules” x “De Engels 55”
Now and again fresh blood has to be introduced. This was often done very carefully and if this new line was tested as good then it was anchored into the stock. A couple that has clearly bred magnificently with the own old strain is the couple “Jules” x “De Engels 55”. Two 100% Flor Engels, Putte (B) (read: Jos & Jules) pigeons inbred to the stock father “Den 31”. The introduction of the ‘Engels-pigeons’ from Belgium ensured a new supply of top talent in the breeding team. The most celebrated descendant (read: daughter) of this superior breeding couple is without doubt the ‘Belgisch Meisje 297/05’, who noted down the following in her honours list:

Stock cock for the longer work: “Son Dark Breeder”
Originating from Jelle Jellema from Steggerda. The “Son Dark Breeder” is closely related to stock mother “De Strik” and “Evita”. They are all from the same old Tournier basis from the 70’s and 80’s. He was bought in 2003 for the longer work. But it turned out that the descendants had also inherited a great deal of speed, as a result of which they performed very well in the shorter distances. The “Son Dark Breeder” is a.o. grandfather of the 71st Nat. Barcelona 8.042 p. '09 (1.338 km).
One of his best known sons is without doubt the ‘Nightrider 702/07’, winner 1° NPO Perigueux 1.871 p., 10° Nat Bergerac31.373 p… a giant of a crack pigeon, who was given a well earned place in the breeding loft in 2009. Let’s take a look at the highlights from his honours list

With such a wealth of top talent in the breeding lofts, Arie Dijkstra definitely has a future in the pigeon sport. It was a hard nut to crack, to take such ‘classy pigeons’ out of the racing team… and where everyone expected a temporary ‘dip’ in the racing performances, especially Arie himself… the fears turned out to be unfounded! The 2009 sport season was once again one to frame, there is no stronger evidence of the breeding worth and performance ability of the Arie Dijkstra team! It is after all the performances in the races that assess the worth of a colony… Arie Dijkstra proved once again in 2009 that he can compete with the best on all fronts, even more… belong to the absolute top lofts of the Dutch pigeon sport!
