Gevaert-Lannoo (Meigem, BE): national champions with a small basket

Between 2005 and 2020 they win a 1st Nat. Argenton, 5 x 1st Nat. Zone, 14 x 1st provincial, 5 titles of 1st Provincial ace pigeon or 1st Prov. champion, and a title of 1st Olympiad Pigeon Poznan 2019!

They gathered an impressive list of achievements over the course of 15 racing seasons, with no more than 12 racing pairs and a maximum of 30 young birds. Hats off. With the passing of friend and fellow fancier Carlos Lannoo, the Gevaert-Lannoo success story grinds to a sudden halt. Let this report serve as an homage to one of Belgium's most successful pigeon families from 2005 to 2020. Or let's put it this way:

The smallest team with the greatest results!

Farewell to a friend

The international pigeon racing community lost a great fancier on 3rd of November: Carlos Lannoo was an iconic player in the provincial and national longer middle distance in Belgium. He raced together with his close friend Paul Gevaert, and the Gevaert-Lannoo combination has made genuine pigeon racing history over the past 15 years, claiming many ace pigeon titles at provincial and national level, and a long series of victories at provincial, zonal and national level. The sun-drenched 24th of August 2019 was a pivotal moment in Paul and Carlos's career, a crowning achievement, as they claimed a long-awaited and well deserved national victory from Argenton old birds with racing bird Enable, racing into a strong headwind. And they had already been standing on the top of the international podium earlier that year (in January) with Olympiad Ivanka, winner of a 1st Olympiad Pigeon middle distance KBDB Poznan 2019. The 2019 season would go down in history as one of their most successful ever.

No one could have predicted that 2019 was the last season that Paul and Carlos completed in normal conditions. And that was not just due to Covid-19. Carlos's health problems started in the early spring of 2020, and he continued to struggle over the course of the summer, with hospitalizations, check-ups and treatments. Pigeon racing was no longer priority number one, his health was now his main concern. And yet, New Rudy still claimed a 1st Nat. Zone A2 Chateauroux of 5,679 pigeons. It was their last major achievement. In early August 2020 the racing team was put on hold. Carlos could not go on, and Paul did not want to go on, which we fully understand, given the circumstances. They also started thinking about selling their pigeon collection, and Carlos was hoping he would still be there to witness it. But it wasn't meant to be.

The total pigeon sale of Gevaert-Lannoo (minus a round of 24 youngsters from 2020 with which Paul can continue to race) marks the end of an era. Their biggest strength has always been their small team of racing birds that they carefully put together. Only their very best pigeons would earn a spot: pigeons that won an ace pigeon title KBDB or with an impressive provincial or national palmares. And this is how the combination of Paul and Carlos Gevaert-Lannoo became one of Belgium's leading lofts in the middle distance and longer middle distance.

Gevaert-Lannoo did not need a lot of pigeons, they like working with small numbers. They had 60 pigeons on board in winter time, consisting of 16 breeding pairs and 12 pairs of racing birds in total widowhood. An additional two rounds were adding in the racing season, or a total of 50 to 60 young birds. That's it. No more no less. Quality over quantity.

They would always keep in mind that pigeon racing was nothing more than a hobby; they wanted to keep it enjoyable. It should not become a chore. That also explains their commitment to one single competition, the middle distance. They really stood out in this competition, developing into true specialists and national stars in races of 300 to 600 km.

Golden stock dam Chateauke leads the way

Champions breed champions, ace pigeons breed ace pigeons. Getting the most out of the world class bloodlines of your best birds can open doors to new successes. And the Gevaert-Lannoo combination is a perfect example of that.

The Gevaert-Lannoo combination gained international acclaim for the first time in 2008, winning a 1st Nat Zone of 5,172 p. - 1st Prov of 3,276 olds, and 2nd Nat Bourges of 19,084 olds with BE06-4281858 (also winner of a 2nd Prov Blois 2,710 p.), which is a direct son of Chateauke.

The fantastic breeder and golden stock dam Chateauke BE05-3202164 is a daughter of the fantastic Chateauke BE05-3202164 of Cools-Blanche, winner of a 1st prov Chateauroux of 7,347 p. in 2002. And she is a daughter of stock dam Frieda (Cools-Blancke), paired to the dominant Bliksem bloodline of Gaby Vandenabeele.
The following year she laid another golden egg, which turned out to be a great racing hen: Kaafje BE07-4270406. Kaafje's impressive list of achievements is included in the picture below:

The Gevaert-Lannoo pigeon family had two big stars on board, two stock breeders: Chateauke and Kaafje. And there has been a great synergy between them and three of the best (grand)children of Bliksem and Rudy of Vandenabeele. One of them has been of pivotal importance in today's generation of top class pigeons: master breeder King Gaby BE07-3034700. He is a grandson of Bliksem Gaby Vandenabeele and a half brother of Gloria (from the same dam), a 2nd Nat. ace pigeon long distance KBDB.

The overwhelming breeding potential of Bliksem CEO

The fanciers of Gevaert-Lannoo quickly understood that the bloodlines of Chateauke and Kaafje combined really well with the lines of Gaby Vandenabeele's Bliksem. With this in mind, they also acquired Bliksem CEO, a direct son of iconic breeder Bliksem, and hence a half brother of the equally legendary Rudy of Gaby Vandenabeele. Bliksem CEO was introduced in 2010, and his first few youngsters of 2010 were an instant success.

Bliksem Gaby completes the Bliksem trio

The third star from the Bliksem dynasty is Bliksem Gaby BE12-3127548, which comes straight from the maestro from Dentergem. He is a son of top breeder Rudy, making him a half brother of Super Romeo (1st Nat Ace Pigeon long distance YLs KBDB 2013) and New Bliksem (1st Nat Tulle YLs in 2014). This invaluable breeder demonstrated his breeding potential almost right away for team Gevaert-Lannoo, as the sire and grandfather of race winners and ace pigeons.

This is phenomenal!

The world keeps spinning...

Pigeon racing will never be the same again in and around Meigem-Deinze after the passing of Carlos Lannoo, especially not for his companion Paul Gevaert, who not only lost a teammate but also a close friend. Just like top quality pigeons, highly gifted fanciers do not grow on trees. Think of fanciers that have been racing at the highest level for many years uninterruptedly. They often have an innate talent, you either have it or you don’t. Together, Paul and Carlos turned their Gevaert-Lannoo combination into an internationally renowned team. These fanciers gained international fame with their small pigeon family. A small team with great results! It shows that pigeon racing is about quality, not about quantity. Their list of achievements is impressive. Will anyone ever do better than them? Let’s consider the upcoming pigeon auction as an homage to friend and fancier Carlos Lannoo, and to his and Paul’s life’s work.

Note: Paul Gevaert developed a passion for pigeon racing as a kid, it is something you never get rid of. But from now on he will have to go on without his companion. A round of 24 youngsters from 2020 (12 pairs) should enable him to make a fresh start. Paul is intending to only race a team of young birds in the middle distance, focusing on the provincial and national longer middle distance races. He wants to race against the big guns with a very small racing team, which has been the recurring theme in the Gevaert-Lannoo success story!
