Gerard and Remco Schuiling from Wijhe have had a very successful career. At championships, they get good results year after year, and 2011 was no exception. The 2011 season was great, with a 1st National Championship sprint, 1st National Ace pigeon with ‘Haykin’, and many other top prizes. But 2011 was not their first successful season: this combination has been at the top of the game in province 8 (with about 3,000 members) for many years. They have always focused on sprint races and the middle distance. This combination has been National Champion in both categories, which is quite unique.
In 2002, they were crowned 1st National Champion middle distance, and in the following year, they became 1st National Champion sprint, with among others the 1st National ace pigeon sprint “De Strik” (which is a brother of ‘Father Britney’). The following years were marked by success and 2007 was a turning point. Top pigeon ‘Britney’ represented The Netherlands at the Olympiad. It is remarkable that the pigeons of Gerard and Remco Schuiling were especially successful on the one-day middle distance this time, rather than the sprint or middle distance races.
The fanciers from Wijhe only race with cocks (they have 30), and prior to a race, the hens are shown for a very short time. When the pigeons arrive home after a race, their hen is waiting in the box for the cock. Every day, the cocks have two, two-hour training flights, which are compulsory. The birds are fed together, with a feeding tray on the floor. The pigeons are fed the same corn over the entire week, and the amount depends on the circumstances. If the birds are to fly a hard race, the birds receive a bigger amount of feed. They are also treated for tricho every three to four weeks, with an (individual) pill.
This system allowed the father-and-son combination to collect many prizes:

The ‘Superbreeder’ is a direct ‘Pieter Veenstra’ and is the father of a pigeon that won 16 first prizes. He heads the top lines of 'Barny’ and ‘Amira’, and he is at the top of pigeon racing. ‘Kweekmoedertje’ is also mother of 16 first prizes, and stems from the ‘Jordan’-line of Joop Groenen, coupled with the best pigeon of Berti Camphuis.

In the past few years, Gerard en Remco Schuiling have created an exceptional racing team, and each generation had its first prize winners. First prizes, that is the main characteristic of this colony. Supported by the old lines of the Janssen brothers of Arendonk and today’s top lines of Pieter Veenstra (Koopman), they tried to acheive their best at national level and they managed to do so in 2002, 2003 and 2011. In addition they have some Olympiad pigeons and several national ace pigeons and other victories. These fanciers have become true champions!
