The Vandenheede brothers are obviously the most prominent name in the 2013 Championship of National Ace Pigeons 20132, winning a 1st Nat. Ace Pigeon Long Distance Old Birds KBDB, a 1st + 3rd Nat Ace Pigeon Longer Middle Distance Yearlings KBDB, a 5th Nat. Ace Pigeon Long Distance Yearlings KBDB and a 7th Nat. Ace Pigeon Longer Middle Distance Old Birds KBDB. Well done! It is fair to say that the fanciers from Zingem were a worthy General Champion of Belgium 2012 and they have defended their title in style. This impressive collection of titles and Ace Pigeons is truly impressive and it shows the quality of the modern-day Vandenheede pigeon breed!
1 + 1 = 3
We think almost everything has been said about Freddy and Jacques Vandenheede in the past few seasons. Their racing method, the maintenance of their loft etc. have been extensively discussed and the loft of Vandenheede was always in the news. The late father Rene Vandenheede set things in motion many years ago. Jacques (68) and Freddy (53) learned everything about pigeon racing at an early age and their father Rene was the best teacher they could have. De Zieken and Antigoon x Krijt are just a few of the stock dams that have made history and they continue to influence the sport to this day.
When the two decided to run a loft on their own they had the honour to work with an impressive collection of breeding pigeons from their father Rene. This allowed them to gain a significant advantage over their opponents. It was a gap the others could not close. In fact they have further widened the gap, especially after their decision in 2007 to form a team from 2008. It is often said that one plus one equals more than two but in the case of Freddy and Jacques we would say that 1 +1 = 3.
Five years after the start of this collaboration they have achieved an impressive number of important victories at provincial and national level, as well as an endless series of top results every weekend. Nobody seems to be able to stop them. This is pigeon racing from another planet; these fanciers have been winning prizes week in week out!
Belief in top class pigeons
This combination started racing their old cocks in widowhood and their goal was to excel in the national long distance competition (600-800km). The old Vandenheede breed had been successfully strengthened with several long distance pigeons of the noble De Rauw-Sablon breed (Dream couple bloodline) in the 1990s, which made this pigeon family well suited for this competition. The fanciers from Zingem have been working with largely the same group of pigeons (the Vandenheede breed combined with pigeons from other successful and mostly neighbouring families) but the preparation was slightly different.
Freddy thinks a good pigeon breed is of key importance. This is the alpha and the omega; it is the decisive factor in pigeon racing. The manager that runs the loft (the fancier) has to take care of his pigeons and prepare them for their next task. He has to consider the difficulty of the previous race, the predicted conditions for the next race and he has to act accordingly. The pigeons’ diet is a widely discussed topic but this needs an intuitive approach: the fancier should sense what the pigeons need, depending on the circumstances. There are no rules; the diet can differ from week to week and from pigeon to pigeon. The daily training flights play an important part in this: it is not the duration that counts but rather the intensity of the training: the pigeons have to be going hard. Pigeons that do not go at full speed during the week will not be successful in the weekend races either, which makes perfect sense.
The two fanciers are working with good quality pigeons, they pair good pigeons to other good pigeons, they change the breeding pairs nearly every season to try and find the very best breeding pigeons in the loft and all pigeons are put to the test regularly. This is what they do every season and it is the key to success for this team. The young birds are still raced from the nest to make sure they are not overstrained, considering their future seasons as old birds. Why would they change their methods if they continue to be successful? The cocks are raced in the long distance (600-800km) in classic widowhood. They are usually basketed every two or at least every three weeks. The hens are raced in widowhood as well and their main goal is the national races of the longer middle distance (350-600km). They are basketed every week if possible but they keep approximately ten hens at home every weekend to make sure they are fit for the following weekend.
A look inside the young birds' loft
Nothing but ace pigeons in 2013
They had already won the title of General Champion KBDB of Belgium last year and they wanted 2013 to be an even better season: they wanted to defend their title in style and they wanted to show that it was a deserved title. They closed the season with six first provincial prizes and two national victories, as well as several victories at zonal level.
The best was yet to come. They really dominated the National Ace Pigeon Championships KBDB in 2013, winning an impressive number of ace pigeon titles for the loft of Freddy & Jacques Vandenheede. No less than seven Vandenheede pigeons finished in the national top and two of their pigeons will be awarded as First Ace Pigeons, as the BEST national pigeon in their discipline: the 1st National Ace Pigeon Long Distance Old Birds KBDB and the 1st National Ace Pigeon Longer Middle Distance Yearlings KBDB 2013. This is really impressive!
It is remarkable that the First Nat. Ace Pigeon Long Distance Old Birds and the first Nat. Ace Pigeon Longer Middle Distance Yearlings have the same dam: Morgane. In addition, the first Nat. Ace Pigeon Long Distance Old Birds and the third Nat. Ace Pigeon Longer Middle Distance Yearlings have the same sire: Goldrapp. This is obviously no coincidence. Let’s take a closer look at their impressive collection of ace pigeons. The prizes in bold are the results that have lead to the title of ace pigeon.

They have quite a few top pigeons in their loft and it will not surprise you that there will only be a few free places left in the lofts in Zingem. This loft houses nothing but ace pigeons and phenomenal first prize winners even at national level and these have allowed Freddy and Jacques to stand out from the rest every single weekend. This is pigeon racing from a different level! The result is the title of first Nat. Champion Long Distance Yearlings and second Nat. Champion Longer Middle Distance Old Birds. This is a crowning achievement for a truly magnificent season. We can only conclude that Freddy and Jacques are simply the best in Belgium.
