Debusschere Lionel, "1st National Champion KBDB Long Distance (2003) / Best Loft BDS (2003)"

Hulste

I think it’s has never been before that the national champions KBDB Long Distance and Very Long distance live in the same town. The fanciers Lionel Debusschere and Eric Devlamink only live a few hundreds meters from each other. Today I visit Mr. Lionel Debusschere, the long distance champion. He has very nice loft in his small garden. Lionel Debusschere is one of the best long distance racers in Belgium for many years. He started racing by himself in 1950 and became 24th National Champion in 1955, 6th Champion Long Distance KBDB in 1972, and 2nd Champion Long Distance KBDB in 1992 and won this important Championship in 2003. Lionel Debusschere stands for almost 50 years top racing in Belgium!

Lionel Debusschere
Lionel helpt his father with pigeon racing when he was very young. They raced short distance and half fond with youngsters. He started racing on his own in 1950, yes… 53 years ago. Lionel started with birds from Van der Espt and Stichelbout via Frans Cloots (Lauwe) who was a close friend of Stichelbout. Only a few years later, in 1955, Lionel switched to the long distance and became Champion long distance West-Flanders Club the same year, even 24th national champion KBDB (in those days 25 fanciers were nominated). He has been among the champions all the time. He got his birds from only a few very good fanciers: Santens brothers (Oudenaarde), G. Vandenabeele (Dentergem), Loft Slots (Lede) and Vanhee (Wervik). Lionel made a new line out of this blood: the strain Debusschere. This strain of birds perform well from 100-1100 km; the all-round pigeons from Belgium.

The sire is ‘De Late 997/97’ (from ‘Sproete Ijzeren’ X ‘Siska’) and the mother is ‘Jufferke 001/99’. She is a daughter of the basic pair ‘Judas 207/88’ (4x1st Dourdan and 58 nat. Brive 21.012) X ‘Gebroken slag 246/95’ direct from Louis Vanderwielen (Boortmeerbeek). These are the parents of many top racers on the loft.

Method
On the beautiful loft of Lionel are 62 widowers (old and yearlings). They are matched for the first time on 30th of November. The cocks can raise youngsters once and separated before the hen lays eggs again. The eggs of the breeding birds (about 30 pair) are put under these widowers so that the breeders can start a second round. Racing birds are matched again on April 30th for breeding on the eggs for 4-6 days. Now the widowhood can begin. The best widowers of the season can raise youngsters again in September.
Youngsters (about 70) are raced with success on many different races, including the national races for youngsters. The national race Bourges is usually very good but the youngsters start with the mould and the other races are not so good anymore. Most of them are raced with the door-system; 12 young cocks are raced on widowhood. They are paired up with old hens. All the youngsters are darkened for a while.
Yearling cocks race several races and are stopped on Limoges. If Lionel has some doubts, he races them on Beziers and Perpignan. The old cocks are raced from March till September. They perform well on races 100-100 km, all-round birds.
The cocks eat individual in their nest-box; one spoon in the morning and one in the evening. The loft-manager Ernest Dutroit knows his job perfect since many years now.
Pascaline Vandenbroecke, Wielsbeke, (daughter of the famous late Jozef Vandenbroecke) is the vet. She visits the loft Debusschere every 14 days. She only gives medication when there is a problem. She never founds trichomonas on the birds. Lionel says:’the reason can be found with my bottle ‘Lugol’. It’s a good product and very cheap. Maybe this is the secret to my success?’
