Carlo Gyselbrecht (Knesselare, BE) is supplier of extreme long distance prize winners

Gyselbrecht stands for an internationally renowned pigeon breed that has been highly successful in the extreme long distance for years. The Gyselbrecht pigeons played a defining role in the international extreme long distance competition again in 2017.

Carlo Gyselbrecht is an internationally renowned pigeon fancier. His iconic pigeon Laureaat Barcelona, winner of a 1st International Barcelona 1995, proved to be a pigeon of exceptional quality. Needless to say, Carlo has been taking great care of the invaluable bloodlines of this exceptional pigeon.
One of the most famous descendants of Laureaat Barcelona is without doubt New Laureaat. His dam was bred by grandmaster Carlo Gyselrecht himself, and was born in the lofts in Knesselare (click here for the pedigree of Dam New Laureaat). Hugo Batenburg, together with the PIPA Elite Center, managed to get his hands on New Laureaat, the winner of a 1st International Barcelona 2013 and the title of Gouden Vleugel (for Luc Wiels). His excellent breeding potential quickly became evident, with many of his direct youngsters and grandchildren winning top prizes in international races.

It goes without saying that the invaluable bloodlines of these two iconic Barcelona pigeons have been put together in Carlo Gyselbrecht's breeding lofts. They are also being combined with the genes of other proven winners and international champions, and together they are giving way to new generations of talented extreme long distance racing birds. These pigeons are then put to the test in a number of satellite lofts, where the Carlo Gyselbrecht pigeons have won quite a few prizes in 2017. Here is a look at some of the team's most talented racing birds of today:

18th Nat. Perpignan 4.789 pigeons

Hugo Batenburg-Van de Merwe, the Dutch grandmaster in the international marathon competition, has won a large number of early prizes in the national and international competition in recent seasons. Quite a few of them were won by youngsters and grandchildren of New Laureaat, as well as by a few direct descendants of the Carlo Gyselbrecht breeding loft in Knesselare. One of them is Carlo BE14-4216131, winner of an 18th Nat. Perpignan 4,789 pigeons this season. Carlo was a promising bird already as a yearling, winning a 10th Nat. Narbonne 5,338 p. (after a race that lasted 15h21min in a single day). He stems from Vale Maximus BE11-4100689 (a 100% Frederik Leliaert) x Hillary BE04-4297692 (daughter of 2nd Primus Inter Pares Schumacher x breeding hen Delphine). Click here for this full pedigree.
His nest brother Carlo 2 BE14-4216132 won a 3rd Nat. Cahors 5,279 p. and a 79th Nat. Marseille 3,320 p. in Klaaswaal. This shows that valuable bloodlines can lead to great results!

Top class pigeon Carlo won a 10th Nat. Narbonne (in 2015) and an 18th Nat. Perpignan (in 2017) for Batenburg-Vd Merwe

3rd Nat. St.-Vincent 3,037 pigeons

Frederik Leliaert from Aardenburg in The Netherlands had a major result in St. Vincent, almost claiming a national victory. Unfortunately his regional winner St.-Vincentwinnaar BE16-4134360 had to settle for 3rd national, although she was the first one year old in the national results. This makes her the moral winner from St. Vincent in the yearlings' category (note: old birds and yearlings race together in a single category called old birds in The Netherlands). This hen saw the light of day in Carlo Gyselbrecht's breeding loft. Her sire is one of Carlo's breeding cocks, Blue Carcassonne BE04-2063075 (a direct Erik Limbourg). He is the winner of a 44th Intnat. Perpignan 14,576 p., a 63rd Intnat. Carcassonne 10,488 p., and a 64th Intnat. Tarbes 12,537 p., and he is also the sire of racing bird Jan (for Gyselbrecht-Leliaert), winner of a 1st Prov. and 5th Nat. Bourges 16,859 p., a 12th Nat. Libourne 6,658 p., and a 32nd Nat. Limoges 14,271 p. The dam is a descendant of the famous Dees dynasty of Frederik Leliaert: Zus Dees NL07-1871600 (grandmother of a 2nd Nat. Perpignan, and a full sister of three national first prize winners).

10th Nat. Agen 5,335 yearlings

Fernand Malfait from Zerkegem did great in the race from Agen, winning a 1-2-4-5 against 217 yearlings at club level in Fondclub Steenbrugge. The pigeons that won a 1st, 2nd and 4th prize (and a 10th-39th-107th Nat. Agen 5,335 YLs) are all direct Carlo Gyselbrecht birds, born and bred in the Carly Gyselbrecht Breeding Lofts in Knesselare. Fernand's winner of a 10th Nat. Agen BE16-4134371 is for instance a son of Kint BE14-4216195 (Vanbruaene x Van Houten) x breeding hen Nestzus Student BE09-3160752 Vanhaverbeke.

5th Nat. Agen 6,211 pigeons

This national top result was won in the lofts of Martin De Poorter from Sluis (NL). The dam of this pigeon is a direct Carlo Gyselbrecht, Bontje Wesley BE12-4163220. She is an excellent breeding hen in Martin De Poorter's breeding loft, as the dam of a 5th Nat. Agen 6,211 p., an 18th Nat. Agen 6,897 p., a 32nd Nat. Perpignan 4,789 p., and many others. Bontje Wesley is a daughter of Wesley NL04-1763069 from the Van Houten Family from IJsselstein (original Gerard Van Tuyl), winner of an 8th Nat. Brive 6,029 p. ’07, an 11th Brive 1,245 p. ’06, a 20th Nat. Barcelona 8,042 p. ’09, and a 53rd Nat. Dax ZLU 3,228 p. ’06. The dam is BB BE09-4139189, from Il Brigante x Daughter 1st Nat. Barcelona Roger Florizoone (inbred to the 1st Nat. Barcelona paired to his own daughter).

That same breeding hen BB BE09-4139189 was paired to Vale Maximus BE11-4100689 (the sire of prize winners Carlo and Carlo 2 of Batenburg-Vd Merwe) when she bred racing hen Elisa BE15-4013731, the winner of a 199th Nat. Barcelona 7,872 pigeons for Luc Wiels in 2017. Keep in mind this prize was won in the demanding 2017 edition of Barcelona, which was in fact her very first attempt at this classic! This is no coincidence.

21st Nat. Marseille 1,764 pigeons

Guido and Tom De Rijck from Lier won a 21st national from Marseille in 2017. Their pigeon is a grandchild of top class breeder Etterbak 986 NL06-1419986 of Carlo Gyselbrecht. This Etterbak 986 is a son of the renowned Etterbak NL02-2049323 of Vrösch-Meijers (1st Internat. Ace Pigeon Barcelona ‘05-‘06-’07), and the sire of a 5th Nat. St.Vincent 8,393 p., 8th Intnat. Pau 9,932 p., 41st Nat. Narbonne 4,113 p., and the grandfather of a 40th Nat. Narbonne 3,187 p., 43rd Nat. Narbonne 3,187 p., and now a 21st Nat. Marseille 1,764 p. as well.
