There was therefore some climbing to be done again before we ended up in the ‘Rue des virgines’, where the colony of Bengt Haeck has found its home. Over the last few seasons we have… be it from a distance… closely followed the colony of Bengt. It was mentor Frans Sablon who alerted him to us 3 years ago, that he could be a new ‘long distance star in the making’… and we have learnt that the ‘experienced eye’ of Frans is rarely wrong… so we started keeping a closer eye on the colony of Bengt Haeck. Especially once we got to know him personally, sometimes through parties and other happenings concerning the pigeon sport… and also later when Bengt committed himself to PiPa for placing the homecoming reports of the national races online.
Bengt, with his 32 years, belongs to the ‘young guild’ of pigeon fanciers… call it the ‘generation of the future’. Professionally he is a controller by the food safety agency (FAVV), and is therefore away from the house all day, on the road. Luckily he has found in his parents not only ‘supporters’ of the first hour, but much welcomed help in the practising of his chosen hobby, the pigeon sport. Helping to take care of the breeding pigeons, letting the youngsters out… training the widowers on time… these are important facets for which he can rely on the help of his parents… as a result of which Bengt is able to retain a strict routine and care system. All the things that are more or less necessary for achieving top performances in the pigeon sport! In addition he can also rely on the expert advice of Frans Sablon… the honourable ‘teacher’ who stands by with advice and help... on his way to the ‘top’. That Frans is well on his way to succeed in this mission as ‘kingmaker’… is reflected perfectly in the performances achieved over the last few seasons… whereby already 2 x 1° National Zone A has been won… in 2007 from Bourges, in 2009 from Montélimar! Let’s be honest… that is no ‘small beer’, and performances that open perspectives.
De Rauw-Sablon
When Bengt entered the pigeon sport he already had the preference for the ‘heavy work’… for the long distance. One day he decided, together with his father… to go in search of reinforcements for the long distance races. After thoroughly analyzing the national results, national championships etc…two names were high on their wish list… those of Roger Meyvaert from Ertvelde (winner 1° Nat Ace pigeon) , and De Rauw-Sablon from Lebbeke (1° Nat Champion Long Distance KBDB ’01 and 2° Nat Ace pigeon Long Distance ’01). When it emerged that Roger Meyvaert didn’t have any youngsters at that moment… they ended up by the duo De Rauw-Sablon. In 2002 the first De Rauw-Sablon pigeons moved to Ronse… they were a hit immediately! Naturally they came into contact with Frans Sablon via these pigeons… and bonds of friendship were forged… and one thing led to another. Frans started to take more and more care of his ‘pupil’, and to guide him… if there was a problem or some doubts with the pigeons, or if advice was needed by the coupling… then the ‘teacher’ Frans was consulted. And who was better to ask for advice? Frans Sablon and Etienne De Rauw had already proven that they were ‘national top’ … and moreover, Frans knew his own De Rauw-Sablon strain better than anybody… a not to be sniffed at advantage for coupling and coaching the pigeons. Frans revealed a little of the ‘racing system’ that Bengt would be advised to follow in the future… how he could best coach his aspiring long distance racers, and map out their ‘career’.. with an eye to building up a successful team of long distance racers with which he could complete the national racing calendar.
It was up to Bengt to put this all into practice in his own loft, to build up a stock of pigeons which could compete with the best up to national long distance. A mission which he accomplished perfectly, the performances over the last few seasons have proved it!
Perspectives for 2010 We are now a few years further … and Bengt has managed to breed a classy stock of pigeons. At the moment there are 20 breeding couples which reside in a sort of open aviary… ideal, due to the sun and oxygen which is available in abundance. Because of the connections with Frans Sablon… it will not surprise anybody to learn that the breeding loft by Bengt Haeck is built up with 85 to 90% of that golden De Rauw-Sablon blood… with direct descendants from all the breeding toppers of Frans Sablon with the lines of the ‘Limoges’, the ‘Dromer’, the ‘Goudklompje’, the ‘Smallen’, the ‘Marseille’ and ‘Bak 17’ Aelbrecht, the ‘Montélimar’ and the ‘Albi’… who doesn’t dream of owning such a treasure of ‘breeding gold’? This De Rauw-Sablon basis is replenished with pigeons from Freddy & Jacques Vandenheede and Gevaert-Van Schoorisse… and a few pigeons from the old stock built up with pigeons from the region of Ronse.
If there is one thing that Bengt Haeck has imprinted on his mind then it is… success in the pigeon sport is achieved with ‘quality’, not with the mass (read: ‘quantity’)! Take a good look at whom he holds as his example… the De Rauw-Sablon colony, they never raced with more than 24 widowers… Jules Mannaert idem ditto, Marcel Aelbrecht dominated the whole of Belgian for many years with his 19 widowers! Bengt started the 2010 sport season with 28 racing pigeons in widowhood. These haven’t bred before the season, only brooded twice. The first coupling always takes place during the 2° or 3° week of January whereby the pigeons brood for 10 days… after which the pigeons come together again for a second time between the 20th and 25th of march, and are once again allowed to brood for a few days. During that period there are also the first short training races, weather permitting. The pigeons are ‘never’ shown their hens prior to basketting, only their nest dish for a few minutes. An exception is sometimes made during the first weeks of the widowhood… for a fickle yearling… that hasn’t learned the game yet. Bengt sometimes dares to let such chaps see their hen for a few minutes before being basketted… but this is a once only occurrence, after that they have to know what to do. There is nothing spectacular about the feeding or coaching.. at the beginning of the week the pigeons are given ‘depurative Casaert’ , and towards the basketting they are fed up with the Mariman-mixtures (Super Power and the racing mixture) with some added energetic. Medically, the advice of the veterinary surgeon is strictly followed… but whoever can keep ahead of ‘trichomonas’, and keep the airways clear (although this largely depends on the loft, temperature and weather conditions)… is on the right track says Bengt! Pigeons in optimal health and condition… and having the necessary ‘class’… should perform. No arguing with that… although many fanciers have difficulty in seeing the lack of ‘class’ in their pigeons. They then look for the reason for their failure in the corner where it is least likely to be found! Now, there is no lack of ‘class’ and ‘quality’ in the lofts of Bengt Haeck, with the wealth of De Rauw-Sablon blood, for which Bengt could richly chose from in Lebbeke… by the golden breeding source of Frans Sablon… so as you could read earlier.
Every year 70 to 75 youngsters are ringed. These are darkened with an eye to the national races for youngsters… although Bengt adds… that the game with youngsters is not an aim in itself. What’s more, the attention for the youngsters dwindles somewhat into the background as the accent lies by the game with the old birds. Yet he tries to have a team ready for the first national race for youngsters from Bourges (at the end of July). It also offers the opportunity to test the young hens… and so discover a few top talents which can later prove their worth in the breeding loft… so as the ‘Tia’ and the ‘Mia’ from 2008 (see further by performance pigeons). Whoever has been following the national competitions over the last few seasons, will have noticed how certain colonies, from which their stock is mainly based on that noble De Rauw-Sablon blood… have left quite a mark on the national long distance happenings of our country. It would then be very surprising if somebody so as Bengt Haeck… who built up his colony with quasi 90 % De Rauw-Sablon pigeons, and is then supported from a distance by a certain Frans Sablon himself… was not able to achieve top performances, with the same genre of pigeons! And admit it… during our visit we had the honour of holding nearly all the breeding and racing pigeons… there is real ‘top class’ there in Ronse! So as you can see and read… not the mass… but solid top quality to almost ‘perfect pigeons’ in the hand, and… exceptionally classy long distance racers and a wealth of upcoming long distance talent in the racing lofts! Let us get the papers and introduce you to the long distance clappers that are calling the shots at the moment:
-‘Super Frans’ B04-4389582 A 100% De Rauw-Sablon, in earlier days called the ‘Montluçon’. Is a son of the ‘Kleinen Dromer 376/02’ (son of the legendary ‘Dromer 519/99’ x ‘Sister Smallen 920/01) x ‘Mother Montluçon 491/03’ (coming out ‘Son Smallen 979/01’ x ‘Daughter Limoges 742/98’)… so a chap with 3 x ‘Dream Couple’, 2 x ‘Smallen’, and 1 x ‘Dromer’ in the pedigree… the nuclear, say the very best of the De Rauw-Sablon colony. This powerful long distance racer illustrated his enormous ‘class’ with verve and won:

It is clear that Bengt Haeck has taken good notice of the ‘good advice’ and ‘planning’ from his teacher Frans Sablon. Just like by De Rauw-Sablon self, but also by their immediate friends so as Marcel Aelbrecht and Jules Mannaert… the ‘quality’ came to the surface and their sublime long distance performances achieved with a minimum number of pigeons… but then with ‘real class’! The quality is also rising to the surface by Bengt, and the pigeons have to produce noble honours lists in order to be allowed to remain for the winter… and/or later earn their place in the breeding loft! Bengt doesn’t participate with the ‘mass’ either… but only with pigeons that are worth the predicate ‘top pigeon’. It is exactly there where the strength of the colonies of bosom friends De Rauw-Sablon, Aelbrecht and Mannaert were based… and where Bengt now not only uses as an example, but… so as the above chain of top class pigeons and performance lists clarify… that they are ready to follow in the footsteps of these ‘creators’ of the world pedigree De Rauw-Sablon. We wish this sympathetic youthful pigeon fanatic all the best! Carry on the good work Bengt!
