André & Bert Leideman (Hardenberg, NL) achieve brilliant results, winning a 1-2-3-4 from Asse-Zellik against 11,474 pigeons

The prestigious NPO competition is coming up, which means the strongest pigeon families in The Netherlands are stepping up their game to prepare for these important races. André and Bert Leidemana have had an outstanding warm up race, winning the first four prizes in a tough race from Asse-Zellik against 11,474 pigeons.

This is another impressive achievement by the Leideman family, which appears to have quite a number of similarly impressive victories on its palmares. The fact that Andre’s pigeon family was not well prepared for the 2015 season makes this an even more impressive feat. “ We were both out of the house for quite some time during the winter, which means we alternately looked after the pigeons. It was only in the first week of February when we started to regularly take care of our pigeons; we then paired both the breeders and the racers. All yearlings still had to get accustomed to their new loft in the attic, which cost them several training flights. It seems they have now started to settle into a rhythm.”

This is quite an understatement: team Leideman had yet another reason to celebrate, having the four fastest birds (52/93) from Asse-Zellik against 11,474 pigeons in their team. “We noticed how the pigeons started to get in better shape every week, and we knew they could make a difference when the wind started blowing south-eastwards, resulting in lower overall speeds”, Bert explains. “It takes luck as well but we knew our pigeons can really excel in these type of races. Winning the four first prizes has really motivated us for the rest of the season.”
