G. & S . Verkerk (Reeuwijk, NL) continue to get great results in 2018 and they have an olympiad candidate with Enchanted

The pigeons of Gerard and Bas Verkerk claimed one top result after another again in 2018, including impressive overall results at national and provincial level. They had numerous early arrivals in the natour competition both with the old and the young birds, and super class bird Enchanted is one of the main favourites for the upcoming Olympiad this winter. In other words, the Verkerk pigeon breed was yet again overwhelmingly strong.

We are still trying to keep track of the incredible success story of Gerard and Bas Verkerk but sometimes we fail to keep up, with the team winning so many important races at such a rapid pace. The achievements of the father and son combination in 2018 alone are nothing short of remarkable; we are impressed with the team’s dedication and their invaluable pigeon collection. Click here for the complete list of achievements of team Verkerk in the early season.

They managed to claim the first three prizes in the NPO race from Sezanne later in the season, and we talked about this feat in an earlier report published in late June. And that was of course not their last major success of 2018. The Verkerk breed continued to show their strength in the one day long distance and the natour competition, and we reckoned now is the time to zoom in on their achievements of the past few months. We begin with two pigeons that have really stood out, and which are likely to win a national ace pigeon title or Olympiad title later on.

Enchanted; a new phenomenon for team Verkerk

We have another Olympiad coming up, and most insiders have already been trying to spot the pigeons that are likely to be invited to this prestigious bi-annual event. And what other pigeon breed has given so many Olympiad pigeons as team Verkerk? They have a major candidate for an Olympiad title again this season: none other than NL16-1526026 Enchanted. She has an impressive palmares, with 3 first prizes in 2018, making her perhaps the number one favourite for the title of 1st National Ace Pigeon One Day Long Distance NPO. And she would have actually won three different Olympiad tickets in previous editions based on her coefficients. Here is a look at the palmares of this world class bird:

      2nd prov. release Melun 12,729 p. 2018
      2nd NPO Chateauroux 3,769 p. 2018

      41st s-prov. Pointoise 6,521 p. 2017

Enchanted has a coefficient of 1 across her 7 best middle distance/one day long distance races of 2018, and many of you know that this makes her one of the contenders for the title of 1st Dutch Ace Pigeon middle distance/one day long distance PIPA Rankings. Bas is genuinely impressed with his new number one pigeon: “She is right up there with Olympic Ronaldo, Olympic Unbelievable and Olympic Solange. She is perhaps even the most successful of the three, given her long list of achievements! As a fancier, I am of course glad to see that she originates from Solange and Unbelievable; it shows that keeping our best racing birds here has really paid off. Although that did not surprise me at all.”

Sire: a son of Miracle, himself 24th Nat. Ace Pigeon allround 2009 and the grandfather of Olympiad Pigeon 2015 Olympic Bibi. Miracle was paired to Lieke, 7th Nat. Ace Pigeon allround TBOTB and 8th Nat. hen WHZB 2013.

Flying Wonder; a super class racing bird

Racing bird NL17-1277355 was 1st, 4th, 6th and 10th fastest of over 12,600 birds on average in just four weeks’ time, from late May until early June. It explains why Bas named her Flying Wonder. This hen was basketed for the one day long distance in the following weeks, as well as for the natour, where she added some more top results to her already excellent palmares. She now has a lower coefficient than Laetitia, winner of last year’s title of 1st National Ace Pigeon yearlings PIPA Rankings for Verkerk. This is what Flying Wonder’s fabulous palmares looks like:

The natour competition; an unstoppable team

The team won 60 provincial top 25 prizes across 6 middle distance races this season, along with 25 top 25 prizes NPO in 5 one day long distance races. And then we have the natour competition, which is traditionally raced with the old birds. After the race from Chateauroux they did the flight from Meer, where they claimed the first 8 prizes of 309 pigeons. And right after that came the memorable race from Duffel on 18th of August. All of team Verkerk's old and young birds were basketed for this race, making for a team of over 380 pigeons. And since this team was in great form, and consisting of nothing but highly talented birds, you knew that Team Verkerk was up for a great race. An impressive 225 pigeons were clocked in 5 minutes' time. The sky was crowded with Verkerk pigeons arriving home almost simultaneously. Here are the incredible results from that day:

Release East with 7,769 olds and young birds

At the end of our interview, Gerard and Bas proudly show us a few e-mails in which fellow fanciers talk about their successes with Verkerk pigeons. These include such successful fanciers as J. & F. Hendriks, Derksen-vd Keuken, Smit, vd Bogaard, Van Olderen-Meuwsen, Reedijk-Jongekrijg, Comb. Lin, Göbel-VD Sluis, Snoek, De Wit, Van Vliet-Van Mastrigt, Fechte (D), and Jacobs & Son (B). Descendants of the Verkerk breed have won numerous first prizes, ace pigeon titles and other top prizes at national or NPO level over the course of this season in these lofts.

One particularly spectacular result is that of widower Iron Man for Jos and Lars Vercammen, bred from a direct Verkerk (Andy MUrray x Utopia, a daughter of Solange). Iron Man won several first prizes, and he is now one of Belgium's national ace pigeons. The Verkerk pigeons have excelled almost on a weekly basis in Team Eijerkamp as well, with their 1st Ace Pigeon title NU (North Holland) one day long distance 2018 being bred from a Verkerk bird (the sire is Tanguy, a son of Gavin x Bonita, a daughter of Solange). Eijerkamp won the first 14 prizes NPO in the last weekend of August, and 4 pigeons in the top 10 were bred from a Verkerk bird, including the 1st NPO (from Recovery, a son of Solange x Top Girl).
