A report on the British Barcelona Club old hen race from Wakefield on 11th September 2021

Marathon Margi
Twenty-three members sent one hundred and twenty-two old hens to Wakefield with the British Barcelona Club. They were liberated at 09.30CEST. The following is a report on the provisional result based on members' verifications.
Marathon Margi

First open and first section A was won by P Basham of Southampton with a yearling on 1287ypm. Paul timed Marathon Margi, named after his partner Ang's mum who sadly died of pancreatic cancer. Paul has run two marathons to raise money for research into this disease. Both the sire and dam of Marathon Margi were bred by Geoff and Catherine Cooper, with the sire being a son of Farmer George x Wollongong. The dam is DO Shiraz, 3rd international Bordeaux x Farm Ivy 1st international old hens St Vincent.  

John Adams' old hen

John Adams of Watford was second open and first section D with a yearling on 1245ypm. John timed a chequer hen bred from an unrung cock gifted to him by Mark Gilbert and containing Freddy Vandenheede Trigger Finger bloodlines. The dam is a grand-daughter of Southfield Supreme. 

Paul Baker

P Baker of Seaford timed a two year old on 1223ypm to take third open and first section G. Paul clocked Emily, a grizzle hen containing Marriot bloodlines from John Barnett and crossed with Dennis Ford birds that he bought from Tumley Lofts. Emily has been raced north and south this season. 

Bruce Smith

Ben Smith and Father were fourth open and second section A with a two year old on 1216ypm. The partners pigeon was bred from a pair of birds given to them by Keith Davidson of Holbury. It was their last pigeon back from Ilkeston the week before. 

Kevin & John Zerafa

K and J Zerafa of Portsmouth timed two pigeons to take fifth and eighth open, third and sixth section A. Their first was a yearling on 1202ypm, second a two year old on 1179ypm. Kevin and John's first on the clock is a direct daughter of Enigma, the dam of 1st open Fougeres and Bordeaux. Their second pigeon is the same hen they timed from Ilkeston two weeks previously and which was 6th open. The sire is Steve and Yvette Harris' Yvette's Decision and the dam is Eastern Angel.

Rod Rann

Mr and Mrs Rann and Son of Newport on the Isle of Wight were sixth open, fourth section A on 1193ypm. Rod and Linda timed a daughter of their BICC Falaise national winner. It was a widowhood hen earlier in the season and then was paired up and trained with the youngsters. 

Jim Derbyshire

Jim Derbyshire of Whitchurch clocked a yearling on 1179ypm to take seventh open and fifth section A. This hen contains Brockamps bloodlines from Carden Garrod of Whitchurch, originating from Mrs T Marshall and Son's Machine family. 

Steve Slade

Steve Slade of Calne was ninth open and first section C with a two year old on 1175ypm. Steve's hen is bred from a cock he was given by Joe Raeburn of Melksham when paired to Julie, a consistent racer that is now at stock and producing winners. 

Completing the top ten and in seventh section A are Darren Ede and Family of Southampton with a yearling on 1156ypm. 

Around the sections 

Steve Travers

S Travers of Poole was first section B with a yearling on 965ypm. A late bred in 2020 it was bred from his Heinz family of pigeons. 

Eric Davis

The runner-up in section C was E Davis of Marlborough on 825ypm. He timed a second bird to also take third section on 817ypm. Eric first timed a daughter of his 2018 section winner, containing Soontjen bloodlines, followed by a Vandenabeele. 

Leon Hall

Leon Hall of Oxford timed a three year old on 484ypm to take second section D. Leon's hen is bred down from the combine cock, bred by Mr and Mrs D Adams of Canterbury. It was sent sitting ten days. 

Karen Williams

Karen Williams of Isfield was second section G with a yearling on 1136ypm. Karen timed a pure Frans Zwols bred from stock from John Cowlin of Formula One Lofts.
