Ruiselede
: In West-Flanders are two young fanciers becoming the new stars in pigeon racing. Rik Cools and Piet Blancke these coming-men. They are out-standing in the provincial championship KBDB on half fond (for old and yearlings) and fond (for youngsters). They won 13 x 1st prize in 2000, 16 x in 2001 and already 18 x in 2002. Since 2000, they have won 3 times 1ste provincial prize and won more than 40 times in the top 10 on important provincial races. No other fancier in West-Flanders can do better. Their secret? Mainly bird from the strain Gaby Vandenabeele (Dentergem), good management and the excellent system for racing hens learned from Remi Demey. These guys are full of energy and new plans. Rik Cools and Piet Blancke own two of the best hens on middle distance in Belgium. ‘Bieke’ and ‘Aske’ are most famous in Flanders. Cools-Blancke…Blancke-Cools…it does not matter. All here is young, dynamic, faster, and speedy…. All this is Rik Cools and Piet Blancke.

Coming-men

The partnership Cools-Blancke started in 1992. The two partners are Piet Blancke (41 years and veterinary as profession) and Rik Cools (38 years and teacher). The grandfather of veterinary Piet was Oscar Decloet from Aarsele. In the 80’s and 90’s, Oscar Decloet was a very famous middle distance racer. Piet learned all about pigeon racing from his grandfather. When Oscar stopped racing in 1990, he gave all the stock birds to his grandson. Oscar also bought 12 eggs from the famous Gaby Vandenabeele. (Two sons from ‘Kleinen’ and two daughters from ‘Groten’. From these strains came the basic cock ‘Gaby 184/93’) Piet was ready to begin in pigeon racing but he had no time. He was to busy as a vet. His friend, Rik Cools from the same town Ruiselede, got interested in pigeon racing also because his neighbour had some good pigeons. Rik got some youngsters from his neighbour in 1991 and started racing. The two friends agreed in the partnership Cools-Blancke and started racing with this name on the lofts of Rik in 1992. Some new birds were bought. They got the hen ‘Françine 3074422/92’ from Frans Vandesteege (Poeke). She had excellent results as racer but became very important as stock bird.
In 1996 the friends started another partnership. In the garden of Piet, they started the partnership Blancke-Cools. So now they have Cools-Blancke (racing youngsters and hens) and Blancke-Cools (the stock birds). In the near future they have new plans. Piet Blancke will begin racing at this loft on long distance with cocks. The new loft will be ready in 2003 and racing will begin in 2004. I am pretty sure they will be successful on this distance also. Every year they got more pigeon from the loft Gaby Vandenabeele or pigeons from the same strain. New blood came from Frans Vanwildemeersch-Vincke (basic cock ‘Frans 3336137/95), Vergotte-Braet (basic hen ‘Alfonçine 3043182/94), Pol Lannoo (Markegem) with his strain Vandenabeele, A. & R. Desaer (Ruiselede) with the strain Vandenabeele. All this birds give the 25 breeding pair that are on the loft of Piet Blancke.

Two important basic pair
Two basic pair are really important in the success of 2000-2002.
Basic pair number one is ‘Gaby’ X ‘Françoise’
almost all strain Vandenabeele. The cock ‘Gaby 3051184/93’is from ‘3067317/90’ (= brother Wittenbuik Vandenabeele) X 3067306/90 (=daughter Groten Vandenabeele). The hen ‘Françoise 3185530/95’ is from 3043138/94 (Stier Vandenabeele) X ‘Françine 3074422/92’ (Frans Vandesteege).
The hens 422/92 won 118th Clermont 2.004 pigeons, 35th Blois 668 pigeons, 100th Bourges 3.450 pigeons, 19th Tours 1.316 pigeons, 103rd Châteauroux 1.144 pigeons….
Basic pair 1 are parents of many top racers and breeders. One of the best racers from is ‘Bieke’. Will give you more details about this hen later.
Basic pair 2 is the cock ‘De Frans’ X the hen ‘Alfonçine’.
The cock ‘De Frans 3336137/95’ is direct from Frans Vanwildemeersch-Vincke. He is from 3081200/92 X 3050387/93. The hen ‘Alfonçine 3043182/94’ is direct from Astère Vergotte and Alfons Braet (Aalter). The hens ‘Aske’ is the most important descendent from basic pair 2.
Grandchildren from this basic pair are having excellent results also. A granddaughter named ‘Chateauke’ won 1st provincial Châteauroux 2002 against 7.347 pigeons. Many birds from ‘Aske’ have excellent results, see Cristina, Crista

Method
The partnership is using the system for racing hens of Remi Demey since 1995. The results have only been better with this system. In the garden of Rik is one loft specially made for the system. It has two compartments and a passage in the middle. It is made from wood. On one site you have 24 nest boxes, on the other site 24 small V-shape planks for the hens. Straw on one compartment and grating on the other.
The 24 racing hens (12 old and 12 yearlings in 2003) are matched by the end of November. They can raise youngsters once on the compartment with the boxes. The hens go to the aviary for a few weeks. They are matched again in April but the eggs are removed after the last hen has laid her eggs. Now widowhood starts. The hens move to the compartment with the planks, the partners go to the aviary so the hens cannot hear them. On this system it is important that the hens race every week.
The races start immediately when widowhood begins: 50 km- 100 km- 200 km- Chartres (320 km) - Tours (450 km)…than every week a race of 400-600 km. (basketing on Thursday and race on Saturday) The hens train twice a day: from 7.00 –8.00 AM and from 18.00 – 19.00 PM. When they do not train one hour in the beginning of the season, they must come inside. They cannot stay on the roof. After a few weeks training, there is no problem. When the training is finished, the widow hens always come to the compartment with the planks. They eat, drink and rest in this section.
The hens cannot pair with other hens. To prevent this, Piet and Rik have 3 reasons:
1) race every week
2) young hens are raced on widowhood system also
3) the food is important! It must be diet mixture. The mixture Gaby Vandenabeele (Beyers) is the best for this system. From Saturday till Wednesday 100% mixture Vandenabeele. On Wednesday 1/2 Vandenabeele and ½ widowhood mixture from Beyers. On Thursday 100 % widowhood mixture. In the evening basketing. The system is important but the quality of birds must be excellent!

The combination races 100 youngsters each year. They are darkened from beginning of April till 1st July. It is dark on the lofts from 18.00 PM till 8.00 AM. All youngsters are on another wooden loft in the garden of Rik. Young cocks and young hens are separated when they are 25 days old. They each get a section in the loft. The youngsters are matched in the beginning of June. The young cocks are matched to old hens and they can breed on eggs for a few days. Than widowhood starts for them. Young hens are matched to old cocks. They cannot lay eggs but stay together for one week. Than the widowhood for the hens starts. The old hens and cocks stay in a section on the backside of the youngsters loft. They can go to the partners 60-90 minutes before basketing. After the races, the young hens get the partner till the next day, the young cocks only for a few hours.
Piet takes care of the birds on the medical side of the sport.

He has a few basic statements:
1) Always cure individually by pills
2) Variation of different products for the same problem
3) No medicine for 8 months, only during racing
