Winning a 1 ° national with a series of national, regional and provincial titles and top prizes and being on top is a major start. He owes a lot to his friend and mentor Joost De Smeyter.
Since 2017, Jelle has been racing in the current lofts in Kluisbergen. He races from sprint to the grand middle distance. Only in 2020 was he fully focused on the national grand middle distance races. In years prior, it was mainly the hens that took part in the national races. Jelle competes with 32 couples on total widowhood. This year all pigeons were basketed for the same race. At the beginning of the season there were many pigeons that had to go. But just like elsewhere, the more the season progressed, more and more selection was made, so that in the last races there is a smaller number of them going to the basketing table. Jelle has been very good friends with Joost De Smeyter for years. One thing led to another, so that now 150 pigeons from Joost go to Jelle's lofts every year. These are pigeons from the "faster" lines of Joost. The origin of these pigeons is mainly Willem de Bruijn supplemented with pigeons that Joost has bought in recent years. By Joost the emphasis is placed on the extreme long distance.
