We do not have pigeon vets in Ireland so I had my pigeons examined at a laboratory for poultry. A blood test diagnosed haemoproteus (pseudomalaria) infection. Is this a widespread problem in Europe and what should I treat with?

Dear Chris,
Haemoproteus was/is not widespread in Europe, but the climate change is making it easier for the vectors (sorts of flies and/or biting midges) to survive here. So probably it could be now much more spread than believed. Haemoproteus, though, is not a very severe blood parasite, in contrary of Plasmodium (Malaria), and doesn't cause much disease. But perhaps it could be a reason for less resistance in the birds for other diseases and getting more difficult in top condition. Treatment is the same as for avian malaria (f.e. chloroquine). If possible contact a local poultry vet for this.
