Beste,

Waterige mest met sterfte van nestjongen wordt vaak veroorzaakt door E. Coli. Andere oorzaken zoals paratyfus, coccidiose, paramyxo, trichomonas of een intoxicatie kunnen echter niet uitgesloten worden. Het is daarom aangeraden om dit verder te laten onderzoeken. Controle van de oude duiven, van een staal uitwerpselen en autopsie van gestorven nestjongen door een dierenarts kunnen hier uitsluitsel geven over de oorzaak. In afwachting van de resultaten geef je electrolieten en mineralen ter ondersteuning. Ook start je best met een antibioticumkuur tegen E. Coli en secundaire infecties. Eens de resultaten van het onderzoek gekend zijn, kan de strategie in functie van de uiteindelijke diagnose aangepast worden.

Dear Sir, If you use the counting technique correctly, an OPG of more than 400 (high numbers) means you should certainly treat. I would say, above 250 OPG, it is advisable to treat. Between 100 and 250 OPG, it depends in my opinion of the kind of work the pigeons need to do. Before an important race, it is advisable to treat. In winter season, it can be advisable not to treat because it allows the birds to get more immunity which is an advantage in the racing season, especially when they spend more than one day in the basket. Below 100 OPG, I would also treat if there 's an important race, although I have seen a bird with this kind of infection that had just won a provincial race middle distance against thousands of pigeons. This also depends on the coccidiosis strain. Kind regards

I recently had my pigeons droppings tested as well as swabs test which revealed clamydia, Ornithosis and a high Cocci count within my loft. I am kicking myself as my although winning two races my 2009 Old bird season was very inconsistent and never really obtained loft form (just individuals). The 2009 young bird season got off to a late start as after several training tosses in quick succession the birds showed loss of colour, enthusiasm to fly, no sexual drive and were generally not bouncing about the loft as you would wish to see. I assumed young bird sickness and rested the birds from training and racing for two weeks. They showed good signs of recovery and were returning well from short training tosses (30 miles) so I entered a team of 8 into the National which turned out to be a very hard channel race with poor returnes - to cut a long story short I only ever had 2 return (1 in the result) and these test results may explain why. On inspection of my birds throats this afternoon there appears to be an irregular amount of saliva or clear mucas in a large percentage of their throats and in addition 2 or 3 pigeons with white dots in around their mouth, throat and tongue (2 of the three are brother and sister nestmates-one of which returned from the National to which I refered in the results) I rarely use anti-biotics but they are probably required on this occasion but what advice would you give as I put a great deal of work into my pigeons but the basic health needs to be there in the first instance. After treatment can you advise of any preventatives especially on return from overnight races when the birds mix with others. Kind regards Paul

Dear Sir, The results of the tests reveal two very common, not very serious, pigeon illnesses. They will seldomly be a cause of real pigeon disease but they can be physical condition diminishing. One disease is ornithosis or chlamydophila, which is one of the main causes of upper respiratory problems. When there are problems during racing it can be advisable to treat the birds with antibiotics like doxycycline, but other factors as loft environment and strain susceptibility should also be taken into account. The other disease is coccidiosis. This disease can be a problem when there is a high count, as you describe, most of all for physical condition. It is advisable to let your birds be checked three weeks before big races so you can do something on time. Birds with really a lot of coccidiosis cannot perform well. When they just have a little coccidiosis they can perform, even on top level. In a lot of cases a high cocciciosis count can also be an indication for other underlying problems like for example paratyphoid. That is why preventive measures for paratyphoid can also be of help. I have had a recurring problem with some of my birds while breeding over the past couple of seasons.

I have had a recurring problem with some of my birds over the past couple of seasons. When rearing youngsters everything is fine until they reach approximately 14 days old, the parent birds then loose condition, become listless and pump the youngsters with an excessive amount of water leading to foul smellling wet nests. As they are being filled with mainly water the young are continually looking fed therefore compounding the problem with the parent birds.

The symptoms you describe can have different causes. This could be Trichomonas, coccidiose, worms, paratyphus or nutritional imbalance. I advise you to let your pigeons be examined by your veterinarian and let pose an exact diagnosis from some samples. He can start the most advisable treatment.

De symptomen die je beschrijft kunnen verschillende oorzaken hebben. Hierbij moet je o.a. rekening houden met Trichomonas, coccidiose, wormen, paratyfus of voedingsstoornissen. Ik raad u aan om uw duiven te laten onderzoeken zodat uw dierenarts aan de hand van enkele stalen een juiste diagnose kan stellen. Hij kan dan ook de aangewezen behandeling opstarten.

The most important tip is perfect health.
Make sure you pigeons are in top condition, and this means perfect health.
You can be sure your pigeons are in perfect health by some examinations:
**Swab of the crop, searching for tricho
**Dropping analysis
parasites: coccidiosis, wurms
bacteria: salmonella (paratyhus),...
**Swab of the eye, searching for chlamydia
**General impression of the bird: lice, respiratory problems, muscles, swollen wings,...
If you do this frequently, your pigeons will be in perfect health, which means also perfect condition.
Don't give too much medicines, give only medication when necessary, when the pigeons are ill, and you have the right diagnosis, in this way, you won't have problems after a while with resistance,...
To help to stimulate the condition, you can give some vitamines from time to time,

What's the treatment agains dark purple blue breast flesh?

I hope that you can help me. Recently i inspected my young bird team and was quite alarmed to see that their breast flesh was very dark purply blue. My old birds are fed on the same food but have normalcoloured flesh. My birds have not been raced in 2007 as they were not bred until May time. I have been training them now for a few weeks but they seem very backward and i have experienced a couple of bad training flights. They have been treated for ornithiosis tricho and bacterial problems as i felt something was wrong with them. What can i give them. I have already put them on depurative food and herb tea.

The blue flesh is indeed a bad sign. There can be several causes for this. I would need some more information on appetite, droppings, medical history and feed supplementing. The birds should also be examined by a vet for worms,coccidiosis, etc.

What can I do when my pigeons are going light or have a wet eye?

If you don’t mind I have some question regarding my pigeons, our race season will start in Oct.
1. When my bird back to my loft on the training I encounter that one bird has a one eye cold / wet eyes. What is the cure for this type of problem?

1)The 2 bests products for that are: Doxycycline other Baytril.
When you give such a product by one cold eye problems you have to give that minimum 10 days.
You have to be sure also that your pigeons are not infected with canker because canker is about by 90 % present by such a problem.
2)When the pigeons are going light, the best is consult a Vet to control the current diseases (Canker-coccidiosis-worms...).
When the Vet don't find any disease and that your pigeons are very light, the best is sacrify a pigeon to make an analysis in a good labo.
When you find the cause of the problem than it's easy to give the just treatment.
3)For the long distance races I don't believe in motivation.
On my own loft, my best prestations (1st internat. Bordeaux, 2nd nat. Montauban...) are always with pigeons who are basketted very quiet.
From 100 km until 400 km, you can use some motivation but not at the beginning of the season.

We hebben veel last van coccidiose, ook al verzorgen we onze duiven goed.

Ondanks dat we goed spelen de laatste jaren hebben we veel last van coccidiose. Wij onderzoeken microscopisch ons duiven om de 21 dagen. Wij stellen dat dan vast.
Wij reinigen twee maal daags de hokken, hebben allen afzonderlijk eten en drinken. Van waar komt dit dan voort vragen wij ons voortdurend af??? Wij behandelen tijdens seizoen met appertex als ze er hebben maar kunnen wij dat voorkomen zodat we niet meer moeten behandelen tijdens het seizoen? Nu verleden week onderzocht en terug veel coccidiose ondanks winterverblijf in open volieres. Wij zijn radeloos.

Coccidiose op zich veroorzaakt niet veel ziekte bij duiven. Meestal is er een ander onderliggend probleem waardoor er telkens weer veel oocysten van coccidiose in de mest teruggevonden worden. De coccidiose profiteert als het ware van de slechtere immuniteit in darmwand en lichaam. Eén van zo'n oorzaken kan bijvoorbeeld paratyfus zijn.
Er dient dus op zoek te worden gegaan naar de onderliggende oorzaak. Als die aangepakt wordt, dan zullen de duiven ook veel resistenter zijn tegenover de coccidiose.

Moet ik mij zorgen maken als er (beperkt) bloed in de mest aanwezig is?

Enige tijd geleden stelde ik bij één van mijn weduwnaars vast dat er bloed bij zijn mest aanwezig was. Hij gaf al een tijdje de minst frisse indruk van het hok maar verder naar mijn mening geen zorgwekkende symptonen. Hij werd zeker niet mager. Na een dag of 2 was zijn mest terug normaal. Hij geeft alleen geen levenslustige indruk en zit wat dik in de pluimen. Moet ik mij zorgen maken?

Bloed in de mest betekent meestal kleine wondjes thv de darm. Afhankelijk van de grootte van deze wondjes en de plaats waar die wondjes zich bevinden zal er meer of minder bloed bij de mest zitten, en klaar rood zijn, of donkerder van kleur.
Die wondjes kunnen bvb ontstaan doordat de duif bepaalde "vreemde voorwerpen" heeft opgegeten. Maw, een scherp iets, of een stukje (electriciteits)draad of iets in die aard, die thv de krop, de maag, de darmen kan problemen veroorzaken.
Soms kunnen die wondjes ook veroorzaakt worden door heel erge infestatie van wormen, maar dan zullen de dieren ook heel mager zijn.
Bij kippen ziet men dit veelal samen met coccidiose, maar bij duiven is dit niet echt het geval.
Bij een duivin kan er soms wat bloed meekomen op het moment dat ze een ei moet leggen, maar dit niet echt verloopt zoals het zou moeten.
Bij heel verzwakte duiven die plots een heel sterk voeder te verorberen krijgen, ziet men soms ook wat bloed in de mest. In bepaalde gevallen van "vergiftiging" kan er ook bloed in de mest zitten.
Ik zou die duif heel goed in de gaten houden, en indien dit nogmaals voorvalt, op zoek gaan naar de oorzaak, Uw dierenarts kan hierbij helpen.
