Comment évitez un traitement trico ou autres pendant la saison sportive?
En période de concours, ou vous faites controler vos pigeons régulièrement par un vétérinaire spécialisé et vous traitez en cas de controle positif ou bien vous traitez systématiquement toutes les 3-4 semaines. Je ne crois absolument pas aux "pigeons invulnérables". Il est vrai que certaines colonies sont plus sujettes à la tricho que d'autres mais ne jamais rien traiter et quand même bien jouer, je n'y crois absolument pas.

All these pigeons are most likely infected with the disease. Actually the swallowing problem usually is also a neurological problem - the nerve to regulate the swallowing muscles is damaged -. Also it is logical that the pigeons will get generally weaker because of the severe kidney damage.
As far as therapeutical possibilities, like already mentioned in other answers to this disease, you should consider as much as nutritional support as possible, but also just vaccinating the birds could be of help. Although this is not the general rule it could be of great help to cope with this infection. This must be some kind of homeotherapeutic effect.

Duiven zitten in een open hok, voorkant open halverwege. Mijn vraag is waarom de duiven altijd in elkaar zitten?

Wanneer uw duiven tijdens de winter in elkaar getrokken zitten (‘dik zitten’), zal dit eerder door de koude of om wille van trek zijn. Zeker in een open hok zullen duiven dik zitten. Ze doen dit om zich te weren tegen de koude. Het ‘dik zitten’ komt doordat de veren een beetje rechtgezet worden. De lucht tussen de veren houdt de lichaamswarmte vast en zorgt zo voor een isolerend effect. Duiven kunnen hierdoor wel tegen een stootje. Koude is niet zo een groot probleem maar trek (gure wind) op de duiven moet je wel vermijden. Plaats daarom een windbreeknet voor het open gedeelte.
Zieke duiven zullen ook dik zitten. Zij zijn echter minder actief en hun algemene conditie is duidelijk slechter. Het verschil tussen dik zitten door koude of door ziekte is dus goed te beoordelen!

One of the most important effects of paratyphoid is hepatitis. Your story seems to me a perfect example of how antibiotic treatment alone is not always sufficient in dealing with the disease. If possible try to get also vaccine for this disease. Before vaccinating it is good to treat the birds again with antibiotics 8 days before the vaccination and I would continue the treatment untill 6 days after vaccination. Repeat the vaccination after one month (also depending on the kind of vaccine you can get) in accordance with your veterinarian.
In this way I suspect you will have much less problems.

Egg laying depends on a number of factors. The diet should contain sufficient protein and a good vitamin(vitamin E)/mineral (calcium)balance. There is also the factor lighting. There may be 14 hours of light. The pigeon may not be too fat. When all these things are ok and the pigeon still doesn’t lay there may be a problem with the genital system of the pigeon (infection of the oviduct). Parasites and bacterial infections (Salmonella,Coli) must be excluded.

Tijdens het azen van graanjongen drinken de duiven veel. Hierdoor kan het zijn dat de uitwerpselen aan de waterige kant zijn. Wanneer het echter diarree betreft die gepaard gaat met conditieverlies en/of andere ziektesymptomen (braken, gewichtsverlies, verminderde eetlust, enz…) moet je rekening houden dat er meer aan de hand is (wormen, paratyfus...) Verdergaand op jouw verhaal (waterige mest maar niet ziek) is het belangrijk om voldoende mineralen te verschaffen en enkele dagen electrolieten in het water te doen.
Voor de zekerheid laat je best een meststaal analyseren om een eventuele wormbesmetting uit te sluiten.

The symptoms you are describing are indicative for an adenovirus type I problem complexed with E. coli or hexamita, if the birds you are talking about are of young age. It could be wise to treat your birds for this disease (antibiotics) in accordance with your veterinarian and let the birds be examined to exclude other causes that could complex the problem. If the problems are occuring with old pigeons, there could be a problem with adenovirus type II, candida, herpes and/or trichomoniasis.

When I'm dropping the forma drops in the eye it can't run away and take several seconds to pass?

When you drop drops in the eyes and it doesn't go away immediately, this is very indicative for upper respiratory problems, which is negative for navigation in racing pigeons. If the drops are coloured like forma drops, the drops should go away rapidly and the colour should be visible in the throat after dropping it in the eyes. This means the connection ducts between eyes, nose, throat is open as it should be. Depending on other symptoms, signs during the clinical examination and/or results from swab tests, different medication (mostly antibiotics) could help coping with these problems f.e. doxycycline, spiramycine, amoxicilline, etc... But there could be also a viral component with this like herpes. In that case antibiotics do not help completely. If you see this frequently with your birds it could be interesting to change your loft climate (better ventilation).

The symptoms of catarrh you are describing could indicate an infection with trichomoniasis, candidiasis and/or herpes virus. Since you have already treated for canker, you and your vet should probably take these two other possibilities into account. Herpes is very common but is a virus so it is hard to treat. You could consider an L-lysine treatment and vaccination if possible.

The answer is very simple, do not give medication constantly and only keep the exceptional healthy birds. It can also help to only purchase birds from lofts from which you know not much medication is given and still perform well in races. You can use vaccination to enhance the immunity status of your birds, so you have to use less antibiotics. It is also important the birds are in a good loft (extremely important for respiratory problems) and the birds get all necessary nutriënts, vitamins and minerals (these can be given in product form and/or from nature).

Is homeopathy (i.e.homeopathic remedies) ever used for homing pigeons?

I sometimes use homeopathic remedies for racing pigeons (only when the fancier is also open for this) and with succes. I use it mainly together with vaccination (f.e. for less side-effects), for respiratory problems or for viral problems. It cannot for example free a bird of trichomoniasis or other parasites, a combination with other treatments is necessary for this. The efficacity of homeopathy is questioned because there is no adapted explanation why it can work although some research really does show effect, even double blind. New findings of Nobel prize winner Montagnier on cluster forming and specific electromagnetic variations in water (quantum effect) could mean a scientific base on how homeopathy could work.

Airsacculitis (infection of the airsacs) can be caused by Chlamydia. Chlamydia is responsible for ornithosis. Doxycycline is a good choice for treating ornithosis. However you should keep in mind that respiratory problems are a multifactorial problem (stress, overcrowding, bad ventilation,…).

Problems with the fertility in older cocks are seen very frequently, and sometimes there is something to do about it, sometimes it is possible it is over and out.
First of all I should try to couple the cock during the best weather circumstances. Fe Here in Belgium I should couple him during april / may (the spring), because at that time the quality of the semen will be at the top. If it is possible couple him with some routined hens. Giving extra vitamins like Vit E and selenium and so could be a usefull help. Injections or tablets with hormonal products are sometimes usefull, depending on the problem. If there is an opportunity to test the semen, this could be of great value in order to give some more information about the possibilities of the cock.

On the hand of the symptoms that you are giving it is not very clear what the problem is. Is there been already an autopsy or a bacterial analysis by your veterinarian. Because it is important to know if there is really an infection and with which bacteria? Could you please give some more details because otherwise it is impossible to make the correct synthese.
It is possible that it is a E-coli infection, but then is has to be gone after treatment with the correct anitbiotic. It could be also a combination of a viral infection like f.e. circovirus in combination with a secundarly bacterial infection like f.e. coli or streptococcus.
Please give some more details.

From the symptoms you describe this could be adenovirus, but a medical examination should be necessary to exclude all other causes. You can treat the birds for secundary bacterial infections like E. coli. These are antibiotics like trimetoprim, amoxicilline, doxycycline, lincomycine, enrofloxacine,... An antibiogram can be of help to determine the right medication.

My pigeons were diagnosed with herpes virus about 2 months ago and also were vomiting just over a week ago?

Herpes is very common in pigeons and a lot of pigeons stay carrier of the virus. This doesn't at all have to mean that bird will not perform well, but in cases of immunity weakening this virus can cause some temporary respiratory and/or throat problems. This can happen because of the races, the stress in the baskets, etc... Then it can help to administer L-lysine on the food for one week f.e. This has a blocking effect on the multiplication of the virus and does help clinically, but it is no medication so it can come back when the birds still have a weak immunity or other diseases. Vaccinations can be of help to prevent the disease from breaking through.

Je ne crois pas en une flore digestive très développée chez le pigeon (contrairement aux humains par exemple).
Si vous voulez signifier que les fientes ne sont pas encore parfaites en disant que vous ne savez pas rétablir la flore intestinale, il faudrait voir si les fientes sont aqueuses ou collantes (grasses). Il faudrait faire effectuer une analyse de fientes par un vétérinaire spécialisé pour écarter toutes pathologies (coccidiose, vers, paramyxo, paratyphose, mycoses...). Seulement après cela l'on peut déterminer le meilleur traitement possible.

Having read your complete story and search for a cause, I'm personally left with one main explanation from my point of view, but I could off course still be wrong. It could also be important to inform us on which kind of samples were sent (droppings, blood,...)?
From my perspective I think of herpes virus being responsible for the symptoms you are seeing. Although it came back negative I would be curious to know from which samples and with what technique herpes virus was investigated. It could be interesting to vaccinate your pigeons for pigeon herpes virus if you can get such a vaccine.
Also it is my experience that vaccinating against paratyphus (salmonella) (in my case always with dead vaccines), has a positive effect on general immunity and so also on immunity for herpes problems. There are a lot of false negative sample tests for salmonella, so coming back negative from a lab doesn't have to mean anything.

Malaria in pigeons is caused by a protozoon that infects the red blood cells. It looks like malaria in humans but is not so pathogenic. If the pigeons are infected, though, they do have a bad condition and the racing results are bad. This parasite is common in some regions of the world and less common in others. It depends very much of the presence of the mosquitos or flies that carry the disease and infect other birds by biting. A good treatment is primaquine, also used for prevention.

Although respiratory diseases indeed are the most important cause for navigational problems I would not consider this as only factor.
Respiratory infections cause inflammatory effects in the eye and beak area. These parts happen to be the regions where some of the senses for oriëntation are located. Although the question of oriëntation with animal species is not completely answered, there is some research clearly indicating that these regions are extremely important for effective navigation f.e. it seems the birds have magnetite cristals in their beaks to be able to "sense" the earth's elektromagnetic field. Also recent studies have shown instant non-local chemical effects occur in the retina of the eyes as soon as the birds look in the correct direction of their home, indicating to be a biological quantum effect. So it seems to be very logical respiratory problems give problems for navigation, and this is also what we are seeing in practice.
Nevertheless, it has also been shown that pigeons tend to develop rigid navigation routes, especially the last part of the race. As soon as the birds start to recognise parts of the landscape/region they tend to fly home following the same route. This could also be a reason for the phenomenon you are seeing, the birds are just flying their normal traject at the end of the race losing precious time. It could well be this could be trained, but it also could be hard to change. Perhaps a trick could be to train your birds one by one (releasing a pigeon only when the previous one has disappeared from sight) from different wind directions.

A pigeon who is infected with paramyxovirus has entered to my loft and after about 15days later my pigeons started showing symptoms?

First of all when have you vaccinated your pigeons against PMV?
When a pigeon is infected with PMV the only thing you can do is give supportive care. The PMV infects the kidneys and the nervous system wich causes watery droppings because of the drinking of lots of water and nervous symptoms. Resistance to other diseases such as coccidiosis and tricho is reduced.
The disease can last for 6 or more weeks. When you have pigeons with heavy symptoms it is best to eliminate these pigeons. After 6 weeks the shedding of the virus has stopped but nervous symptoms and the symptom of watery droppings may persist longer.
Supportive care: electrolytes, probiotics, vitamins for boosting the immunity.
Consult your vet if antibiotics are necessary. After a secondary bacterial infection has been diagnosed you can consider to give an antibiotic.
Keep in mind that there is also a notification obligation when your pigeons are infected with paramyxovirus.

The PMV virus is indeed very resistent in its environment and stays virulent for months between 8° and 20° Celcius (but also lower temperatures) and it resists acid and alcalic solutions. You can desinfect the loft by using a propane gas burner (very effective but be prudent in using), other desinfectants can be formol, fenol or butylhydroxytolueen. Most other desinfectants are not effective enough.

This side-effect can occur from different kinds of vaccinations, especially with oil adjuvans vaccines. It's important to vaccinate these vaccines at room temperature (and not cold). Some birds (and even some strains of birds) seem to be more sensitive for this side-effect. When the lump gets really big, it can be removed surgically, but in a lot of cases the lump in time just diminishes in size and grows out. If it's a stock bird there are normally no problems for breeding. For racing it can be a handicap, so it is important to vaccinate racing pigeons early enough.

Lugol heeft vooral een algemeen ontsmettende functie. Het zal de duif, in beperkte mate weliswaar, helpen te vrijwaren van allerlei infecties.
Let wel, infecties zoals tricho, coccidiose, wormen, luchtwegproblemen, adeno, Coli en andere zullen niet kunnen worden tegengehouden door toedienen van Lugol alleen.
Lugol is enkel en alleen een hulpmiddel en heeft zijn beperkingen!!

The symptoms indicate a very severe liver damage. It could very well be this pigeon is infected with adenovirus type II, but a diagnosis can only be given through inspection and examination by an (avian) vet. If it is adenovirus II, this pigeon is lost and cannot be treated. All birds that get ill from this disease, also die (100% mortality).
For other causes a veterinary examination of the bird is necessary.
