Een duif met 12 slagpennen?

Geachte, Zoals te zien in bijgevoegde pdf files, kweekte ik deze winter een duifje met 12 slagpennen aan één vleugel en 11 aan de andere. Een 11 pender zoals wij dat noemen is niet zo uitzonderlijk te noemen, maar van 12 hadden ik noch mijn collega duivenmelkers geen weet. Is dit fenomeen werkelijk zo uitzonderlijk of komt dit regelmatiger voor? Alvast bedankt voor uw antwoord. Sportieve groeten. Boni

Hoewel het inderdaad zeer uitzonderlijk is, heb ik dit fenomeen van twaalf pennen nog gezien. Elfpenders komen inderdaad heel regelmatig voor.

A warm welcome to all; lately i have been noticing my race team with an accumalation of mucus in the back of there throats. I suspected that the pigeons had Mycoplasmosis Catarrh( birds are regulary checked for tricho so that is the reason why i do not suspect it to be canker). I started a 5 day teatment with chevi-mulin in feed mixed with chevicet-t (both from Chevita) . For the first 3 days I also sprayed in their mouths chevi rhin . in water they had livimun (this treatment plan in advised by the same firm) . All birds look ok but sadly their is still signs of the slimy substance and not that of a clear water like mucos. have you any suggestions if this is normal? Birds are execising well and cannot seem to find the problem. For the record there is an individual who pants slightly after flight but not for long. Dear Sir, When pigeons have this mucus accumulation in their throats and there have been previous clinical examinations for canker and other, as you describe, and there have also been some treatments, than in most cases this is caused by herpes virus. This virus can not be treated with medication, only secundary infections can be dealt with. The birds should recover on their own. In a lot of cases a good herbal tea and water acidification can get the throats back to normal more quickly. Kind regards

Dear Sir, It is not advisable because when it is both injected in the neck there is a much greater possibility to have ulcerations in the neck. This also depends on the kind of vaccines. There have been some better results with one vaccine in the neck and one in the leg, but this is not the most advised place to inject the bird. Kind regards

Dear Sir, The first and most important thing the first moments when the pigeon has returned, is rehydration. During a long distance race - depending of wheather condition and if the pigeon has drunk before and during the race - a pigeon loses a lot of water and also electrolytes. Although a pigeon doesn't sweat, it still loses water (and some salts) mostly through the air sacks(, droppings and urine). That is why it is important to give electrolytes after the race. This is meant to bring the blood volume as fast as possible back to normal level. If the bird only drinks water without electrolytes, the water diffuses very quickly to the tissues and it takes a lot longer to get the blood volume (and pressure) back to the normal level. When the blood volume gets faster back to normal level, toxic substances are faster removed from the muscles and nutriënts are more rapidly distributed to different tissues, with as effect that the recovery happens faster. Another factor that is very important for a good recovery, is good quality protein. If the pigeon gets good quality protein in the first hours after the race, the recovery is tremendously faster. Good quality protein could be a good balanced supplement of amino acids or even better a light digestible protein supplement with an amino acid composition that is very similar to the one in muscle tissues, for example whey protein. These two factors next to a good nutrition and water get a bird faster back in good condition. A normal long distance bird should be eager to fly when pigeons are left out of their loft the day after a long distance race. Kind regards

Dear Sir, As you are speaking about a product like f.e. Sedochol , we see that it contains the following substances : sorbitol , Choline chloride , and methionine. Sedochol stimulates the excretion of bile and the digestion. Methionine and choline promote the discharge of harmful substances and fats from the liver. After the excretion of harmful substances from the liver sorbitol stimulates the function of the intestines. The combination of these substances results in improved digestion. So the administering of Sedochol is recommended after treatments with antibiotics to support the liver. Also Sedochok promotes the moult through the presence of sulphuric amino acids , such as methionine. Sulphuric amino acids are essential for the production of keratin, the building bricks for the feathers. I think if you are using the Sedochol on the pigeons it will not be giving any problem with pigeons to start moulting earlier in the season. Best Regards

Dear Sir, For a good moulting the factors good nutrition and a good physical health are of vital importance. First of all the birds should be healthy especially be free of parasites. When they are physically healthy after a good examination by a specialised veterinarian, it is absolutely unnecessary to give any kind of medication. For nutrition the amino acids methionine and cysteine are important as these are the building blocks of feathers as well as enough energy (carbohydrates or fat) because moulting needs a lot of energy. Also a good liver protection like sedochol could be of help. Also be aware that your birds are spared from too much 'work'. Birds that have to breed a lot or even still train (tosses) are during moulting much more susceptible to various diseases. During moulting a bird should be able to use his energy for the new feathers, especially when the bird has done a lot of racing during the season. The moulting season is typically a period that serious illnesses can cause a lot of problems, also because we ask too much of them after a hard season. Kind regards

Dear Sir, This liver protecting product should during racing be used only the days after a race, never before a race. This is because of the liver defattening properties of the product. Allthough this is good in most periods of the year it isn't good just before a race as a pigeon on that moment actually needs to store some fat in his liver to be able to use this energy during the race, so one or two days after the race is perfect. During the moulting season you can give sedochol three times a week as the liver has a lot of work during this period. Also after medication this is a good product. In winter season or breeding season one time every week or every two weeks is enough. Kind regards

I recently had my pigeons droppings tested as well as swabs test which revealed clamydia, Ornithosis and a high Cocci count within my loft. I am kicking myself as my although winning two races my 2009 Old bird season was very inconsistent and never really obtained loft form (just individuals). The 2009 young bird season got off to a late start as after several training tosses in quick succession the birds showed loss of colour, enthusiasm to fly, no sexual drive and were generally not bouncing about the loft as you would wish to see. I assumed young bird sickness and rested the birds from training and racing for two weeks. They showed good signs of recovery and were returning well from short training tosses (30 miles) so I entered a team of 8 into the National which turned out to be a very hard channel race with poor returnes - to cut a long story short I only ever had 2 return (1 in the result) and these test results may explain why. On inspection of my birds throats this afternoon there appears to be an irregular amount of saliva or clear mucas in a large percentage of their throats and in addition 2 or 3 pigeons with white dots in around their mouth, throat and tongue (2 of the three are brother and sister nestmates-one of which returned from the National to which I refered in the results) I rarely use anti-biotics but they are probably required on this occasion but what advice would you give as I put a great deal of work into my pigeons but the basic health needs to be there in the first instance. After treatment can you advise of any preventatives especially on return from overnight races when the birds mix with others. Kind regards Paul

Dear Sir, The results of the tests reveal two very common, not very serious, pigeon illnesses. They will seldomly be a cause of real pigeon disease but they can be physical condition diminishing. One disease is ornithosis or chlamydophila, which is one of the main causes of upper respiratory problems. When there are problems during racing it can be advisable to treat the birds with antibiotics like doxycycline, but other factors as loft environment and strain susceptibility should also be taken into account. The other disease is coccidiosis. This disease can be a problem when there is a high count, as you describe, most of all for physical condition. It is advisable to let your birds be checked three weeks before big races so you can do something on time. Birds with really a lot of coccidiosis cannot perform well. When they just have a little coccidiosis they can perform, even on top level. In a lot of cases a high cocciciosis count can also be an indication for other underlying problems like for example paratyphoid. That is why preventive measures for paratyphoid can also be of help. Dear Madam/Sir, Chloroquine and/or primaquine are other possibilities and should have good results. In our region problems with blood parasites are not common so I don't have a lot of experience with the treatment and possible side-effects. Kind regards

I have a '08 late breed hen. She as laid 1set of eggs(no shell early'09) Was separated and placed in Avairy for the rest of '09. Was then mated in early DEC.'09 Set of eggs no shell again.She as been given fresh grit with oyster shells added.every week in '09.also in Nov.'09 given a calcuim syrup product .In this area of Canada we do not have any pigeon vet's. Dear Sir, There is a big possibility that this hen will never be able to lay normal eggs. I suspect that the gland who is responsible for the making of the egg shell is not well developed or has been damaged by for example a past uterus inflammation. If she keeps on laying this kind of eggs while being completely healthy and getting all the nutriënts she needs, you can assume she has permanent uterus damage. Kind regards

Before 15 days to start the season sporting the pigeons, I wanted mesmofazer treatment salmonella and airways, but do not know what product you use! I usually give the Enroflox, which is a product that contains this composition: ENROFLOXACINA 10p / v; POTASSIUM HYDROXIDE 2% w / v; SODIUM FORMALDEHYDE sulphoxylates 0.4% w / v; WATER PURIFIED make up 100%. I would like to know your opinion.

Dear Sir,

That product contains the same active substance as Baytril. It has the most effect against paratyphus and E. coli but it is also effective for respiratory problems especially for mycoplasma. It also contains formaldehyde which is a fixating substance. It is desinfecting against bacteria and yeasts, but it also fixates living body cells, so it is never included in veterinary medication!

A lot of hens only laid one egg?

My hens are put together with the cocks. They layed on day 12. 9 of them only layed one egg. I don't know if I should be worried I have a disease problem or something is going on with them. They are all very active and the stoul are normal?

Dear Sir,

This is indeed not normal. Allthough there is no indication for disease as the birds are active and have good droppings, I would nevertheless advise to let your birds be examined by your vet and take samples for the most common diseases. In case of egg laying problems especially paratyphus, streptococcus and E. coli could be a problem. But in any case a general clinical exam could bring some clarity. Also make sure the birds get enough minerals (calcium) and protein.

Dear Sir,

I would vaccinate all your birds again after six months (so this is in this period). After that it should be enough to vaccinate annually (depending on the vaccine). Be aware, though, to vaccinate your young birds as soon as you can. In this way you protect your colony from getting the illness again.

Dear Sir,

There are multiple antibiotics that can be injected. Most of the time they work for a short time so the injections have to be repeated. Also some products can cause side-effects with pigeons. Some products that can be used are Baytril (broad-spectrum, intestinal problems, organ inflammation) and Linco-spectin (respiratory and intestinal problems). Use these products with caution and only under guidance from a veterinarian.

Dear Sir,

This could be a serious problem. If it's a young hen, most of the time egg binding is caused by infectious agents like paratyphus, streptococcus, E. coli which causes inflammation of the oviduct. It is advisable to start an individual antibiotic cure after a veterinary examination and put the hen in quarantaine. In a lot of cases the egg just comes off. In some cases the hen has to be injected with oxytocine by the vet. Sometimes even surgery is necessary.

my pigeons have watery droppings! what caused this? but some they have solid brown nugget droppings but here very damp and wet! other are just mushy looking? i treated for a while with natural live yogurt because i heard that could cure\1 then i realised the intake of water so i decided to put the on electrolytes because in one of the old gazzettes. bilco gives that option for a cure of watery droppings!

Dear Sir,

Watery droppings can be caused by a number of factors. Infectious agents that can cause watery droppings are paramyxovirus, paratyphus, sometimes E. coli septicaemia, herpes, etc... Normally this is related with kidney damage. If the kidneys don't function properly, they don't retain enough water and so a lot of water is lost through the urine of the bird (which normally is solid and white). If there is an intestinal problem the droppings are more slimy than watery.

Another cause could just be stress. Some (male) birds tend to drink much more when they are separated just because of stress. When the birds drink more they also make much more (watery) urine.

A good veterinary examination of your birds could be of more assistance to find the real cause.

Dear Sir,

The paratyphus vaccine registrated here in Belgium (colombovac Paratyphus) lasts for 6 months. An autovaccine (vaccine made of salmonella isolated on the loft itself by the laboratories of Ghent University) lasts for one year. In both cases it is advisable to do two inoculations the first time the birds are vaccinated. This means one first inoculation (primer) and a booster one month later. The primer should be a dead vaccine (f.e. colombovac paratyphus).

Une plume de sang ne signifie pas nécessairement que le pigeon souffre de l’une ou l’autre infection.Si plusieurs pigeons sont touchés (et plusieurs plumes par pigeon) le mieux est de faire contrôler ces pigeons pour la paratyphose. Si la plume de sang est d’aspect normal, je n’y toucherais pas.Si elle apparaît fragile ou anormale, elle peut être tirée. Salutations

I have had a recurring problem with some of my birds while breeding over the past couple of seasons.

I have had a recurring problem with some of my birds over the past couple of seasons. When rearing youngsters everything is fine until they reach approximately 14 days old, the parent birds then loose condition, become listless and pump the youngsters with an excessive amount of water leading to foul smellling wet nests. As they are being filled with mainly water the young are continually looking fed therefore compounding the problem with the parent birds.

The symptoms you describe can have different causes. This could be Trichomonas, coccidiose, worms, paratyphus or nutritional imbalance. I advise you to let your pigeons be examined by your veterinarian and let pose an exact diagnosis from some samples. He can start the most advisable treatment.

Dear Sir,

A cock, when he is already ten years old, can have some difficulties with the fertility due to the age. Sometimes it can be very helpfull to use some little "trics" in order to stimulate the fertility and the sex drive, but when the cock is not fertile anymore, it is possible it is completely finished also.

First off all some questions in order to have a complete view on the capacity of this cock.

Did he gave in the last 2 years no youngsters at all? Did he had problems before also to fertilize all the eggs? Do you see if he is mating like it should be? Is he interested in the hen?

May be it is best to try to couple him with different hens (not at the same time of course), hens that are very experienced, hens that are not that old and hens that already have proven to give successfull youngsters without any problems.

Try to couple him during the summer period, in that way he has all the good influences (the natural influences) of that period (light, temperature, etc)

If you have coupled him during periods that have long nights and short days, give some extra light, so he has 12 - 14 hours a day enough light influence. Also when it is too cold, trying to have a warmer temperature.

Avoid to couple him during the molting period, because this takes a lot of the bird and can be very stressfull and the fertility is much lesser.

Let him couple in a very quiet box, if possible, completely alone, so he is not disturbed by other pigeons, and he can concentrate him completely on his own hen.

If he doens't give since long time youngsters, may be it is a good thing to seperate him for a little while, and then letting him together with a hen. Once you have some youngsters, let hen and cock together, do not seperate them.

Giving some extra food supplements, based on vitamine E and Selenium,.. are very helpfull during the fertility periods.

If necessary you can give some hormonal products, depending on what the problem is. Doing a semen examination can learn you a lot concerning the problem that cock has, and may be be followed by a treatment if necessary.

Vermoedelijk gaat het hier om woekeringen aan het gehemelte als gevolg van trichomoniasis.Soms kunnen de bollen zodanig groot worden dat hierdoor de ademhaling bemoeilijkt wordt omdat ze over de ingang van de luchtpijp groeien. Soms kunnen zich ook grote bollen in de krop vormen waardoor de voedselopname en spijsvertering bemoeilijkt wordt.De bollen kunnen meestal
zonder veel moeite verwijderd worden, soms moet het operatief gebeuren.Preventief werken is echter de boodschap zodanig dat de bollen zich niet kunnen ontwikkelen. Dus op regelmatige basis trichomoniasis behandelen.

Dear Sir,

There are possibilities for injection of antibiotics with racing pigeons if needed. One of the best products for respiratory diseases is subcutaneous injection of Linco-spectin. Other products are also possible, but some can give side-effects. It is best to consult your veterinarian for right application and dosage after a diagnosis. Be aware that injection always brings some risks and should be administered in a correct way.

Dear Sir,

There are multiple causes for infertility with male birds. First of all one should never exclude infectious diseases like paratyphoid, streptococcus, E. coli septicaemia. Therefore a good examination by a (pigeon) vet is very important. The pigeons should be free of the most common infectious diseases and should be treated and / or vaccinated for important bacterial infections depending on the (probable or exact) diagnosis.

Off course when a male bird gets older there is a bigger possibility his hormone system will start to fail. In that case a hormone injection can be of some help. Also it is important an older male pigeon keeps having contact with females (at least he should be able to see and hear females) so testicles keep producing testosteron. It is normal for a bird that the testicles in the winter go in regression and produce less testosteron (this depends on daylenght and contact with females). In older pigeons it can occur that the testicles don't become really "active" anymore which means that the bird stops producing spermatozoïds or they are of much less quality.

Some older males can just have some arthritis on joints and have difficulties with the mating act itself. Than just cutting the tail feathers can be enough.
