Bijlichten begin je best vanaf de langste dag van het jaar (21 juli). De grote rui van de dekveren zal je hierdoor zeker enkele weken uitstellen. Het zal echter niet zo spectaculair zijn dan wanneer je met verduisterde duiven werkt. Iemand die louter op de nationale vluchten van de jonge duiven wil pieken en dit tot en met Gueret, combineert best beide systemen. Concreet wil dit zeggen dat er verduisterd wordt tot de langste dag van het jaar en dat vanaf dan de daglengte wordt aangehouden door bij te lichten.
Wanneer je bijlicht in het voorjaar kan dit wel de rui versnellen! Sommige snelheidsspelers passen dit toe om eind september op de najaarsvluchten te schitteren. beste Dr, onze duiven hebben sinds de tweede overnachtvlucht last van knorren?

Het “knorren” en het “niet strak zitten” lijkt me een probleem te zijn ter hoogte van de ademhalingswegen.
In de mest en keeluitstrijkjes voor tricho zal er daarom niet noodzakelijk iets te vinden zijn, maar het niet strak zitten, mogelijks met “openstaande” oortjes, nattere ogen, misschien zelfs regelmatig niezen, hoesten, het meer blauw zitten in de spieren, vuile neuzen, zijn allemaal symptomen die kunnen maar niet moeten aanwezig zijn bij ademhalingsproblemen.
Bij de ene zijn er duidelijke symptomen dan bij de andere die soms heel discreet kunnen zijn, maar toch heel wat problemen met zich kunnen meebrengen.
Een behandeling tegen de “kop” zoals vaak wordt gezegd, lijkt hier aangeraden, maar weet wat je geeft!!!
Het toedienen van antibiotica kan hier mogelijks een oplossing bieden, maar uw dierenarts kan u helpen bij het kiezen van het beste soort antibioticum eventueel door enkele uitstrijkjes te nemen voor bacteriologisch onderzoek. Hij/zij zal je ook verder kunnen helpen ivm de dosering, de duur van de behandeling, de toedieningswijze etc!!
Het is heel belangrijk dat je je houdt aan de voorgeschreven regels om een goed resultaat te bekomen.
Na iedere behandeling is een vitaminen kuur zeker aangeraden.

Il est difficile de donner une réponse à votre question.
Chaque vétérinaire a ses propres idées et préférences concernant les produits de « mise en condition ».
Pour ce qui est des concours de fond j’attache beaucoup d’importance à l’utilisation d’acides aminés, d’huiles et de minéraux de manière telle à amener les pigeons en très bonne condition et avec suffisamment de réserves. Au niveau de la chaleur il est conseillé de donner des électrolytes (avant et après le concours) de manière à hydrater les pigeons au maximum. Au niveau médical il va de soi que les pigeons doivent être indemnes de parasites (tricho, cocci, vers…) et les voies respiratoires doivent être surveillées de près.

Enrofloxacine should not be administered to pigeons raising squabs or before laying eggs. Enrofloxacine is harmful for the cartilage production. This antibiotic can be administered to youngsters without clear side-effects with a normal dosage from the age of 6 weeks.

When it takes that long for a female to lay eggs, it is advisable to separate her from the male. There are some possibilities for this not laying of the hen. It is possible the bird is infertile and is not capable of laying eggs. It is also possible the bird is not in good health, so it could be wise to let her be checked by a veterinarian. There is also a big possibility the bird is just stressed. Sometimes hens just don't lay when they are put in a new surrounding and with another male. In that cases it could very well be the hen just lays normally after been separated. Sometimes it could also be good to put her with another male bird after been separated for two to three weeks.

I suspect an endoparasitic problem f.e. hairworms. If you let the birds' droppings be checked, this could be found. A good general diagnostic examination could clear out other causes.

Make sure the bird is free from parasitic infections f.e. worms, coccidiosis and trichomonas. Make sure the bird is also vaccinated for paramyxo. If the bird was infected with paramyxo in the past, it is possible the bird will keep making to much urine ( not to be confused with diarrhoea caused by enteritis ) , because the irreversible kidney damage can cause the kidneys not being able to make the solid uric acid. Therefore the birds keeps having watery droppings, even though he is not sick anymore. That doesn't mean he can't breed well. Such a bird is in my opinion handicaped for good racing results.

Dear Sir,
Ivermectine can be used pure or diluted. It is enough to drop one drop (not more) in the neck on the skin because the product is able to penetrate the skin and gets into the blood. In that way mites are completely eradicated. It works also for most worm infestations, but not 100%. It is not advisable to do this during racing season! It doesn't have influence on moulting.

It is indeed probable that the pigeon could be suffering from paratyphoid (salmonella infection). Streptococcus doesn't give typically weight loss. Although you treated for worms, it can be important to know if the product you used is active for hairworm infestation and the environment has been desinfected. If so, you probably should treat for Salmonella (Baytril or enrofloxacine) according advice from your veterinarian.

De gevolgen kunnen min of meer groot zijn ngl. de graad van besmetting. Uw vermoeden is terecht dat dit vaak onderschat wordt. Voor de verschillende aandoeningen die u aanhaalt, zijn de gevolgen wel verschillend. Ik dien ook op te merken dat de graad van ernst van ziekte bij jonge duiven heel dikwijls sterk afhangt van de aanwezigheid van circovirus en de schade die dit virus aanricht aan het immuunsysteem (vernietigen van de zogenaamde B-cellen, dit zijn de cellen die instaan voor de aanmaak van antistoffen).
- Het herpesvirus kan zorgen voor een ernstige aantasting van voornamelijk de lever bij jonge duiven tot de leeftijd van 4 maanden. Hoewel lever in staat is te regenereren, kan men zich terecht afvragen of een duif die ernstig aangetast geweest is als jonge duif nog wel in staat is dezelfde stofwisselingscapaciteit te genereren. De lever is de stofwisselingsfabriek bij uitstek en voert heel wat nuttige functies uit tijdens een inspanning zoals een wedstrijdvlucht. Zeker als de afstand van een duivenvlucht groter wordt, is een duif die niet meer de volle 100% levercapaciteit bezit, in het nadeel. Het kan zelfs mijns inziens het verschil betekenen tussen al dan niet terug thuis geraken. Uit de praktijk is dit ook gebleken bij duiven die ooit als jonge duif vergiftigd geweest zijn met leverschade. Dit is ook logisch aangezien de lever zowel energie kan opslaan onder de vorm van vet en glycogeen, als tijdens een vlucht stoffen kan 'recycleren' met vrijkomen van nieuwe energie (dit is bijv. het geval met melkzuur waaruit opnieuw glucose gevormd wordt in de lever). Een duif die slechts 90% levercapaciteit bezit, kan onmogelijk hetzelfde prestatieniveau bereiken op grotere afstanden in vergelijking met een duif met 100% levercapaciteit. Naar kweek toe ben ik van mening dat die invloed veel geringer is m.a.w. voor de kweek zijn deze duiven mijns inziens wel nog volwaardig inzetbaar.
- Het paramyxovirus is een andere zaak. Dit virus zal voornamelijk de nieren en zenuwen gaan aantasten. Hoewel de invloed verschillend is, is deze daarom niet minder gering. Het spreekt vanzelf dat een duif met een lagere niercapaciteit soms ook minder zal presteren. Zolang de nierschade binnen de perken is gebleven, kan dit nog meevallen, maar opnieuw zullen grotere afstanden meer problemen geven. Bij een langdurige inspanning gaan er water en electrolyten verloren, bij slecht werkende nieren nog meer. Zo'n duif zal dus sneller water en electrolyten nodig hebben. Indien de zenuwen aangetast waren, kan het soms een hele tijd duren vooraleer de zenuwsymptomen verdwijnen (tot maanden). Eenmaal de zenuwsymptomen verdwenen zijn, is deze duif volledig hersteld -op gebied van zenuwstelsel weliswaar-. De reden van dit traag herstel heeft te maken met de trage regeneratiecapaciteit van een zenuw. Zolang het zenuwcellichaam niet aangetast is, kan een zenuw teruggroeien, maar dit verloopt wel zeer traag. Naar kweek toe heeft het ooit aangetast geweest zijn met paramyxovirus heel weinig nadeel. Naar wedstrijden toe heb ik sterk mijn twijfels.
- Het adenovirus is in feite hetzelfde verhaal als voor herpes. Ook hier kan een ernstige leveraantasting gebeurd zijn en ook hier kan een duif daar levenslang de gevolgen van meedragen. Ik ben eveneens van mening dat de invloed op wedstrijden veel groter is dan op kweekcapaciteit. Bij adenovirose kan er naast de leveraantasting ook een darmaantasting gebeurd zijn. Ik denk persoonlijk dat de invloed van deze darmaantasting veel geringer is voor latere prestaties dan de leveraantasting, omdat darm zeer snel kan regenereren.

From the information I got from you, the most probable cause for the symptoms seems to be paramyxovirus. I would vaccinate the healthy and sick birds. Although mostly vaccination of sick birds is not recommended for most diseases, with paramyxo it can be of help to diminish the mortality rate. Try to get sick birds in quarantine as soon as possible. For the rest await the test results and follow the advice from your veterinarian.

Candida should be easy to see with a normal haemacolor coloration of a swab and even without coloration it can be recognised because of the typical oval form with sometimes a kind of bud. Only when there is a massive infection, it explains clinical symptoms and lesions. The masses and lesions in throath and crop are indicative for trichomoniasis, pox virus, herpes, perhaps candida. The liver could indeed indicate a problem with herpes, salmonella, pseudotuberculosis, another (bacterial) infection.
In your case, if it is a young bird, I suspect a problem with herpes virus, perhaps in combination with trichomoniasis and/or candida.

It is possible there is an infection (bacterial or viral), but I suspect there could also be a problem of mineral shortage, especially calcium. It is important that breeding pigeons get a daily supplement of calcium containing elements.
An infection like paratyphus can give enteritis. This can also be a cause of incapability of mineral resorption. Although the birds don't seem to lose weight, you should certainly also consider paratyphus. A good diagnostic examination of a veterinarian and perhaps autopsy could give some clarity.

The puffed up feathers don't always have to be an upper respiratory problem as many fanciers tend to think. In a lot of cases it is just because of a lack of real racing condition. When a bird is in condition the feathers of the whole body, also on the head, tend to 'stick' closer to the body. The bird seems smaller and is shining. The bird is full of life and trains hard on its own. Some birds always seem to have puffed up feathers on the head and still race very well.
I suspect not many upper respiratory problems with the ten day treatment you gave. It is possible that the antibiotic treatment has undermined a good racing condition. A clinical examination could make clear if there are other infections. If not, a good liver treatment (because of the antibiotics) like sedochol, electrolytes, vitamins, herbal tea, good nutrition and training, could be the best way to get the birds in condition.

Alvorens we deze vraag kunnen beantwoorden zou ik graag wat meer gegevens weten over deze duiven. Zijn het nog jonge dieren? Is er reeds een onderzoek gebeurd bij een dierenarts op eventuele aanwezigheid van haarwormen of spoelwormen? Wanneer dit ok is kan er een eventuele onderliggende salmonellabesmetting aanwezig zijn. Hebben de duiven een of andere kuur gekregen te dicht bij de koppeling? Sommige geneesmiddelen kunnen ook ook een negatieve invloed hebben op de vruchtbaarheid. Wanneer dit allemaal ok is,kan je de duiven een kuur geven met vitamine E en essentiële vetzuren.
De duiven kunnen ook onvruchtbaar zijn.
Conclusie: laat de duiven misschien eerst onderzoeken bij een dierenarts. Wanneer blijkt dat de dieren gezond zijn kan je ze behandelen met vitamine E en essentiële vetzuren.

It can be a form of ornithosis.
By a lot of these problems there is also a combination with herpes-virus.
When you have only 1 pigeon with this problem, you treat him individually.
You can inject 2 times an antibiotic as Linco-Spectin and give terramycine in the eye 2 times a day 5 days long.

This could be adenovirus, canker and/or a yeast infection. Best is to let the birds check for these parasites and do an appropriate treatment. The adeno-coli syndrom can be treated with antibiotics, sedochol, electrolytes, light digestable food. Some of the symptoms are indeed indicative for paramyxo virus. Nevertheless, as you mentioned yellow diarrhoea with birds before they die, I also suspect adenovirus type II. Yellow diarrhoea is a sign the liver is very badly harmed and that's the case with adenovirus type II. The virus even completely destroys the liver. With adenovirus II, there is 100% mortality, this means that if a bird gets sick it will certainly die. Luckely not all the birds get sick. It is not clear why one bird gets sick and the other not. The fact that sick birds also could survive on your loft, indicates adenovirus type II can't be the only problem. It is very possible that the watery dropping are caused by the hairworm infestation and/or paramyxo.
The bad feathers could be an indication the young birds are also infected with circovirus. This virus attacks immune cells of the young bird (under 4 months old), this makes them vulnerable for all kinds of infections. It is a major problem this year in Belgium with a lot of deaths in young birds. They can die from ordinary infections like canker, but also from paratyphoid, adenovirus, etc...
Certainly do not underestimate the hairworm infestation as it can also be cause of deaths.
As for the vaccination for paramyxo, it is advisable to also do this as soon as possible.

You should consult a vet as soon as possible. There are some possibilities for the symptoms. One of the possibilities certainly could be paramyxovirus, in which case your other birds also could be in danger.
Other possibilities are parasites, adenovirus type II, yeast infection, etc.

Concerning the problem with the canker / tricho I can suggest the following :
1/ in cases of really heavy infections we advice to give the 1st day a tablet with Spatrix , 2 nd day another tablet Spartrix and then the following 7 days we advice to treat with ronidazole on the grains ( normally the dosage is for 5 % ronidazole 5 gram on 400 gram grains , or ronidazole 10 % 5 gram on 800 grams of grains.
2/ Also important is to know if you use always the same product it could be that there is a resistance against the product. So changing of product is also important.
You can use : ronidazole ( f.e. Tricho Plus , etc. ) , metronidazole ( f.e. flagyl , etc. ) , carnidazole ( f.e. Spartrix , etc. )
3/ Also it could be a big help to give some acids in the drinking water during the whole year. You will certainly have less problems with tricho if the water is more acids ( lower PH ).
4/ Also I have seen that a certain selection helps also , in a lot of cases the pigeons which are infected are from the same family , so try to select them out of your loft.

Is it in the eye ball? Or is it something that is attached to the eye or the eye lid? If is it something that is attached to the eye lid, it is possible that the pigeon has an infection with the pox virus. When a pigeon has problems with the pox, close to the eye, you can use eye drops if necessary, based on antibiotics, but you need to have to wait almost 3 – 4 weeks before the pox will dry and fall of. When there is a problem close to the eye due to an injury, you can also use some antibiotic eye drops. May be a picture can give us some more information.

Regelmatig komen we in de praktijk duiven tegen die ter hoogte van de hals een kale plek vertonen. Dit kan een parasitaire of een mechanische oorzaak hebben. De parasiet die dit meestal veroorzaakt is een vederschurftmijt. Een product op basis van ivermectine geeft hiervoor de beste resultaten. Best 3 maal behandelen met een tussenperiode van 10 dagen. Verwacht echter niet dat de kale plek spectaculair verdwijnt. De afgebroken veren zullen pas tijdens de ruiperiode gewisseld worden!
Ook een mechanisch probleem kan aan de basis liggen van afgebroken veren in de halsstreek. Scherpe randen van voederbakjes, roostervloeren of nestbakken zien we soms als de oorzaak van dit euvel. Zo kwamen we destijds op een hok waar de duiven tussen de raten van de ijzeren roostervloer naar gemorst graan pikten. Het hele hok zat met afgebroken veren aan de krop! When there is a problem of exercising and there can't be anything found of parasites, I'm always alert for a streptococcus problem. It is a common infection with pigeons and it can be cause of abnormal losses. In a lot of cases I have seen that a amoxycilline treatment was very helpful in these cases.
The mucus problem could be multifactoral, both bacteria or herpes virus. Doxycycline will not always help for a lot of bacteria that can cause throat and upper respiratory inflammation. Linco-spectin, tylosine, amoxycilline, spiramycine, enrofloxacine are possibilities for these infections. Better would be to let throat samples be tested by your vet(s) and do an antibiogram. If there is herpes complexing the problem, letting the birds rest and heal on their own could be the best solution.

There is a possibility that the hens are having an inflammation on the uterus. This could be caused by several infectious agents like paratyphoid, E. coli, streptococs. It could be advisable to let them be treated in accordance with your veterinarians advice with antibiotics.
