There is certainly nothing new under the sun, when we say that the PIPA auctions under the name "Jewels of the Sky" (JOS) have become a huge success … so much so in fact that these auctions have now become the ‘sign board’ of the internet auctions on PIPA. Not only due to the fact that for these auctions we try to present you with (about 5 to 10 ) of the very best pigeons or their direct descendants from the 45 to 50 absolute top lofts from our part of the world… but also due to the fact that for every edition we go in search for something ‘innovative’ to frame this ‘JOS’, and that’s what makes these auctions a real success story.
For the 7th edition of the ‘JOS’ which will soon commence we also looked for something ‘special’… The result that you will see is ‘spectacular’… even ‘revolutionary’, and an ‘innovation’ in terms of pigeon photography. The new edition is called ‘Jewels of the Sky 360° Edition’, whereby from every participating fancier at least 1 pigeon will be presented with a unique ‘360-view’. Via a ‘one-shot modus’ the pigeon is photographed from all sides at the same time by several professional cameras, then the images (photos) are combined into a unique 360-view! Via ‘flash’ and ‘java’ the end result is then also suitable for using on a iPhone and/or iPad!
We visited Maarten and Rob, the ‘brains’ behind the firm Pigeon Photography, currently more or less the ‘personal photographers’ for PIPA, and who put together this piece of art! We let them explain how this idea came about...

At the beginning of September Thomas Gyselbrecht asked if something special could be done for the 7th edition of the ‘JOS’… something like a pigeon in ‘3d’ image? At first sight this seemed very difficult to do for and with pigeons as they are ‘moving objects’. Yet Maarten and Rob continued to contemplate this idea, via various sites, their search on the internet brought them into contact with product photography in 360°. However, all the examples they were shown involved end products of ‘stationary objects’, which would normally be photographed with just 1 camera. They then had the amusing idea to try aligning several cameras. If they were successful in introducing this into the pigeon world, it would be very innovative, even ‘unique’! Maarten began to take care of how they could set up the cameras, whilst Rob thought about how many images they would need to photograph the pigeon from all possible angles! A few external companies were approached for their ‘know how’ to help them realise this project. Just over 4 weeks since the first ideas, the complete setup was ready and the first tests could take place. Firstly with a ‘stationary’ object… which proved that the setup was ‘good’, and the ‘real work’ with the pigeons could commence! After looking at the first ‘test results’ and a few small adjustments, Maarten and Rob were fully confident that everything had been set up properly… and the first pigeons for the ‘Jewels of the Sky 360° Edition’ could be recorded on camera! The result can be seen in the video below.
